This is the cookset that I currently use whilst out doing buschraft. The Crusader MK2 cookset is great value for money. It's lightweight, strong, durable and versatile. I use it with a trangia alcohol spirit burner and it works a treat! It even has a mould that perfectly fits the trangia burner. Below is more information on the cooking system:
Weight: 105grams
Multicam carry pouch comes with:
1 x Hard Anodised cooking cup (1 litre)
1 x Plastic Black Osprey NATO drinking cup (0.5 litre)
1 x Plastic Black Osprey NATO drinking bottle (1 litre)
1 x Hard Anodised Steel base cooking plate with folding rack
The additional items I use with it are:
Crusader Cup holder clip: www.thebushcraftstore.co.uk/cr...
Crusader MK2 Aluminium Lid with strainer holes: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Handmade-Me...

Great review. I have the MK1 and i can see all the improvements in the MK2 that we all moan about with the MK1. The trangia does not fit in MK1! The flame rolls around thew sides of the MK1 and wastes heat! The MK1 takes longer to boil!

just bought my set and like you i have used the meths burner, which also fits in the kit and for me it is a fantastic bit of kit. i like the way the cooker keeps all of the flames contained so that all the energy goes directly to the bottom of the cup which makes it super efficient

It does work, but it doesn't produce enough heat to boil as fast as it could. The mug sits too close to the burner. The Trangia is also getting very hot due to how close the mug is. This might actually be a benefit in the winter if using ethanol which doesn't work well below 16C.

Great review and I would agree that this is an excellent versatile cook system. You can use small tinder and twigs/pine cones, trangia, firedragon or other gel fuels, nesbitt or hexamine blocks. An all in one solution, even if you don't get the lid. Thanks for taking the time to make the video. I love my MKII system.

Thanks for this review. Rather than the Trangia meths burner, I use a Trangia gel burner, though an empty airgun pellet tin works just as well. I line it with aluminium foil (changed regularly) to keep it clean. I use "Dragon Fuel" gel, which is available from "Go Outdoors" for about £4 per litre cachet. A litre goes a very long way!

Hmmm!!! Was looking at the Mk2 in a bush craft shop the other day and I must admit, I was impressed with the size of both units and how light they are. The Mk1 isn't ideal for a day walking/hiking fairly long distances and I'd swapped it for lighter kit (a French army aluminium mug with an aluminium US army pot stand) but this might be a good all round alternative. Thanks for the review!!

The Swedish military cookset has everything this has and more... including a frying pan built into the lid and an actual lid which this set does not have either as default.... At £60 for this set, your better off buying a refurbished Swedish military cookset which you can buy for half the price :)

I've got the swedish Cook set too, It's excellent, uses a bigger burner, the pan / cup can be used as a lid to reduce boil time. It's only down side is its a lot heavier and takes up a lot of pack space. You can store your meths, lighter and wot not in the main body of the set but you have to store your water separately..

Hello. Great video. I have the original BCB Crusader Cook set in stainless steel and don't carry the plastic cup but instead an additional steel crusader with all fitting together with osprey 58 bottle and cooker unit really well. The addition of a coil of stove rope in the cooker base really increases the burn time of meths and I no longer carry my trangia burner or penny stove. It really is such a versatile and bombproof system. I may get the MK2 cooker unit as it is deeper and could therefore be used to burn wood. I have managed to boil water doing this in the original cooker but it is not ideal as not deep enough but the MK2 looks like it could be done more efficiently. Thank you for sharing. I have subscribed. Happy wandering. Paul :)
@peterbyrne652
@peterbyrne652 6 жыл бұрын
I have found the opposite. The Trangia is much more efficient with fuel as the rope just burns the fuel more quickly. However, the rope does boil more quickly as the gap to the bottom of the mug is better than with the Trangia.

Paul Outdoors I do the same with two steel mugs and the burner mod except I used carbon felt and also have a bean tin can bottom cutoff with a 25mm hole to use as a simmer device. It slides over the burner perfectly! Along with 2 diy steel lids and a long titanium spoon all nestles in a dpm BCB pouch it’s probably my favourite cook kit......not the lightest but absolutely bomb proof!

I bought one of these and its not bad, my only observation is the osprey waterbottle isn't a genuine one its much thinner contstruction and you can flex it with your hands. my genuine osprey bottles from the 1990s will withstand a landrover driving over them. a no nonsense bit of kit with nothing that can fail, that's a win in my book. thanks for the upload, best wishes from mountain bear outdoors.

Cool review, my son uses the mk 1 mug with the mk 2 base, not a exact fit, but still works ,trangia as you do as I find fire dragon (apart from emergency fire lighting), is rubbish, expensive for what it is, even a mk1 crusader mug half full (unless in perfect conditions) takes 2 tabs, alright if you get them free, but crusader is a brilliant system, good health and safe travels, cheers craig

Love the review but I was always told in the army not to drink the water after you have used it to heat up your boil in a bag meal. They gave us ration heaters in a bag . You put your foil bag in, add a little water and it reacts to a small device in the bag and heats up with no flame. I do love the Crusader 2 kit and will be adding it to my wish list. CHEERS.

The amount of holes on the top side could be less I think. That would improve the heat transfer into the cup. If the windshield was higher and enclose the pot more, the heat transfer into the pot would also improve. The pot inside the Swedish army mess tin cooker stands also quite deep inside the windshield. Giving it a very high efficiency.

Excellent bottle, very beautiful, good design, and very practical! Maybe you should take some cloth handles with you, so you don't burn yourself when you pick up the pot, and I think it's nice to insert a strainer in the same way to boil fish, potatoes and vegetables. What do you think about it? What I don't know is if the strainer will be left out of the bottle when you built it... Good morning, Mike.

Great review - but this kit is NOT 105g. Just the plastic bottle and cup are 255g combined. Im not sure about the rest of the items, but im guessing that the full kit could perhaps be 1050g. Mine is 350, and includes a 1,5liter Trangia pot, handle, and burner, and a Bushcraft Essentials "Bushbox Ultralight" (70g wood stove that packs flat, and can also be used as a stand for the Trangia burner). The Trangia pot fits almost perfectly in the bottom of the stuffsack for my sleeping bag, so when i then pack my sleeping bag on top of this, the cookset takes almost no room at all. The stuffsack on my Zpacks Duplex tent also fits pretty snugly inside this pot, so which method i use depends on what backpack i use (backpacks with different sizes require different packing methods for getting maximum efficiency) 👍

Yeah, I have had this sitting in a cupboard for about 6 years. It's bulky, noisy to carry and pretty over priced too. Considering I can take a folding gas stove and leave no mess, it's a no brainer. The little stove was £22, weighs next to nothing and can fry an egg in 3 minutes. Good luck cooking on that.

Nice system, wanted one since I saw the mk1 advertised years ago. The cost and shipping is what stops me from buying it. Just googled the mk2 this would be the cost if I bought it. (£54 + £39.50 shipping) from 1 company. Been using the 58 cup and bottle with a US army aluminum cup since 1974, (British and Canadian forces) can’t justify the shipping cost 😂

I think that BCB have tried to re-invent the wheel and haven't succeeded. The only improvement for me is that the mk2 is lighter. You can use a Trangia burner but it overheats so there is there is no improvement to the stove. The mug has a larger capacity but 750ml is big enough for me, has rivets which protrude on the inside and an awkward ridge in the bottom which is more difficult to clean. All in all the mk1, in my opinion, has not been improved on.

After 7 minutes, my trangia burners are going crazy within this bcb cooking set. seems to me that they are overheating in some way and start burning the fluid from the inside, instead of burning the gas through the jet holes. you can see this in this video too. Yes. It is called thermal runaway with the heat bouncing off the walls of the burner and over heating the alcohol. This burner is not suitable for Trangia type stoves.

The trick with trangia is you have to wait a couple of mins for it to establish a good burn / bloom , many people put pots on within seconds , thus causing a wild burn , , this still boils water ok , but the mk2 cup is aluminium, hard coated yes , but can start to deteriorate with excessive heat , one final solution , for a more natural burn that works well for many including my self , is fire rope in bottom if burner with meths , , or simply let trangia bloom before placing pot on top , take care guys

So you think a review should be done like how a person would use it. But you do the boil test with a lid that is not a part of the standard kit?
@PaulBissekerBushcraft

Use silver foil if you don't have a lid. BCB are too tight to add a lid. Its just common sense to use a lid.

Standard kit comes with a plastic lid. Crusader is designed for cooker which plastic lid will work with, but many people use the mug in the fire directly which is where the metal lid is best. This is a bushcraft channel.

Turn the pouch inside out, and fill with sphagnhsm moss. You have a Millbank bag. Advise from a homeless vet.

16 min. boil time seems a little too long, and inefficient. I am surprised that MK II would take that long. BCB original canteen's bottom area is smaller, so I understand it takes longer to boil. Yet I would expect MK II to perform better.

The issue is the distance from the burner to the mug is too small. Ideal is around 1.5 inches. Resting the mug sideways on top of cooker results in much quick times, but is more exposed to wind. Basically, this doesn't work well as is.

+Deador I've picked up the mk 2 cooker and mk 1 stainless steel mug. Trangia works fine as long as you put one of those UL trangia stands on the burner and use that instead of the mk 2 cup supports.

A) There's no way that whole kit is only 105g B) Does the camo cover get very hot while being used as a windbreak? That could be an issue.

That is not a liter cup or mug. The cup is 500ml. Only the canteen is 1 liiter.

Yes when I read a comment further up about using the W/S I thought the same that it would increase the heat. I'm guessing that the distance between the burner and botton of the cooking pot is not enough.

UPDATE: another post advised to allow the burner top bloom before putting pans on. I tried that and it works no problem

there are two types of water bottle and mug the one used in this vid is an osprey which is thicker and heavier than the other version, osprey cat number is 973-6904 the other is cat 973-6665 and not an osprey made thinner and lighter and prone to leaking more just so you know

Nice review but aluminium for me is a no no. I prefer to stay Alzheimers free. Plastics too with hot liquid are a terrible idea. You do not want that unnatural shit, leaching into you over time. Stainless steel all the way

You can get it also in stainless steel. And the plastik of this osprey setup is stronger than 100°C hot water.
