This was gonna be a quick review of the Cold Steel Bushman Bowie to follow my previous video showing some less known tricks and applications. But turns out I actually had a lot to say in response to the criticism that one of my viewers brought up in the comments.
So here I am, kicking the whiny butts.

I carried one as my only knife on a three month expedition a few years ago. It did everything that I asked of it & more. Fire prep, food stuff & as a short spear it probably saved my life when I was attacked by a pack of feral dogs one night. My only concern is during extreme cold weather, so I'll be getting the Condor Matagi which is very similar, but only because it is made from 1075HC steel. It is a very underrated knife, but is a good jack of all trades especially for those who are weight conscious when out in the wilderness. Pair it with a folding saw & it's almost perfect.

How did the feral dogs behave when you defended yourself with it? What tactic worked? I consider self-defense against dogs as a relevant use.

I suggest wrapping the handle like a tennis racket with the same tape.

@@Yawnpawn1 Sorry about the late reply, I've just seen your comment. I used it in two ways. After retreating up a large boulder, I slashed several of the dogs to keep them at bay, whilst I ended up having to kill a very big dog (Probably a Sarplaninac shepherd dog or cross) with a thrust to the upper chest as it was coming up the rock. For any bunny lovers. It should be noted that my attack occurred less than a mile from where a British archaeologist was killed & partially eaten by a pack of feral dogs two years later. The Greek authorities blamed wolves, but I have my doubts....

Excellent explanations. I’ve had mine for a little over 10 years and use it camping, hunting and fishing while living in Alaska year after year. I’ve cleaned bear, caribou and countless salmon. Super easy to sharpen, baton and slice my potato’s in camp so I’ll keep it!

I personally like the other bushman a little better, but I agree with everything you pointed out. I have used my narrower blade as a spear and caught fish, and used it as a camp knife without complaint. For the money, and for the weight, it is hard to beat the Cold Steel bushman. Very good and thoughtful review.

I have had the other model for many years and I`ve really like that blade. It is a good allover knife, The continuous curve of the edge made it a good carver. (even with his long blade, as a carver) I have no hesitation to take this knife out in the woods. For 20+ dollars, you can not beat that. Good points to you.

As a 🔪 addict , having loads of 'm, cheap and ridiculous expensive , the 4 i used the most are my Swiss knife on my Keychain, the knife on my Leatherman , my 15$ mora and my bushman bowie. The bushman has been used for slicing cutting, chopping, digging and such. Some sharpening and oil and its good to go.

To make handle less round fill It with sand and squeeze in vice, the volume remains the same as it is filled with sand, might be this does not work. Make hole before blade put in screw/bolt as finger guard, like the hole in back of handle.

Great video.... I watched your previous video on this knife, and these two vids convinced me to subscribe to your channel. I like your presentation, and your style is easy to watch. The CS Bushman is a knife I have purchased many times to give to people who are new or just getting started in the Bushcraft/Survival/Preparedness world. I enjoyed this review and demonstration. I feel the same way and was convinced to have this knife available for outdoors use. I think you are not being impolite, but assertive. That is useful and those who truly want to learn could benefit by paying attention to your statements. This knife is so highly adaptable that probably dozens of adaptations could be done. I took a maple broom handle which is decent as a hiking stick, and trimmed the cone at the bottom so it would fit inside the handle. A shorter handle also seems very useful making this a near machete in a pinch.

I love reviews where the presenter just says in a very respectable manner..."THINK...for Gods sake!!" This was one of those times.1 full tang2 strikes ferro and sparks for flint and steel. 3 adequate thickness for a utility camp scenario.4 high carbon steel...easy to sharpen. If you want heavier duty, get an SRK. This guy knows WTH he's talkin bout! Great video.

Oh, and more. I have one of the original ones. Its 17 or so years old now. What a great performer it has been. And the sheath...the nylon one hasn't failed either. I sprayed it with Scotchgard 10 years ago... Again good job.

I know this is an older video- but I just had to commet. I have had my Bushman for 5 years, I don't purposely try to abuse my tools like some-but I do work them. The Bushman is an outstanding do-it-all big bushcraft knife. Cutting thick or heavy brush, chopping saplings, using as machete or battoning kindling and even kitchen duty- it's a great knife with great steel for a great price. I am not a knife snob and I don't have 50 blades, I just think that the few one would carry should good work. The Bushman is one of 4 blades I carry when out bush crafting- A Mora Bushcraft, a Mora Eldris, a Bushman and a Flexcut Whittling Jack 6 Blade whittling pocket knife. These and my Grandsford Brunks Kuben Axe and Banco Laplander saw ( I guess I am partial to Swedish products) are everything anyone needs to make a camp in the backcountry. Each is designed for a purpose- and has it's place. Stuff happens- but if you don't abuse a tool- or try to make it do something it was not designed to do- all of these will last a lifetime or more.

Aaa zapomniałem o najważniejszym. Świetna recka Szymon! Oglądało się bardzo przyjemnie. Trzymaj tak dalej. Czekam na kolejne recenzje z twojej strony. Na polskim nożowym YT oraz częściej zdarzają się takie materiały - że zaczynam się zastanawiać czy recenzent przeciął chociaż ze dwie kartki danym nożem. 10 minut gadania i koniec. Nie wiesz już czy, to recenzja, czy może zwykła reklama. Pokazanie w filmie jak nóż pracuje jest swego rodzaju dowodem: "Tak, wziąłem nóż do ręki, używałem go, więc mogę się o nim wypowiedzieć". Chociaż nie zawsze... Co ambitniejsi próbują dołączać ten element do swoich filmów, co znacząco poprawia immersję. Jednak nieprzyjemny posmak zostaje. Natomiast oglądając twoje materiały jestem pewien, że przeciorałeś nóż z każdej strony. I to mi się podoba.

Hi Simon, based on your idea of the kukri ring I have built a small handguard for the Bushman from a hose clamp. It works great with some duct tape or paracord around it. Later I have built a bigger handguard from a pipe clamp. Each one costed 2-3 Euro in the hardware store. If you like I could post some fotos. Regards, Sokolo

Simon would you consider the Bushman bowie a good alternative to say a machete for clearing brush? Seems more versatile, or would you go with a more dedicated kukuri machete? My area is very tick with brush.

If I knew I'd be dealing with a lot of brush cutting, I'd probably just take a machete. The bushman is versatile which means it's good at everything but best at nothing. Very good for various unexpected situations but probably not the best if you know exactly what to expect.

Great video. What's your thoughts on the other cold steel knife that has a flatter blade? Is there advantage to a bowie style?

I like the bowie shape better. As in, it looks more spear-like. Is there an actual advantage to it? I'm not sure. I think the point of the knife is more centered, which may make it easier to push through whatever you're trying to stab.

What angle do you put on the bushman when sharpening mate? Just found your vids. Great stuff.

So I usually do it in two steps. First goes the main bevel at roughly 17 degrees, then I hone a very gentle, almost imperceptible, secondary bevel at about 20 - 22 degrees. This gives my edges great slicing potential and at the same time makes them tough enough to chop wood without chipping or rolling.

I just ordered one today. And I am now wondering how hard it would be to carefully grind a Choil into it on the blade side, right in front of the handle. Not very deep, Also your idea of the "Ring"I will also be doing. Very good video. And I doubt I will ever be outside in -40c weather.

I have the bowie version. This knife is excellent! Only mod I needed to make was filing back of the spine to bare metal for starting fires with those round rods. Didn't mod the handle, but sounds like it might be a good idea.

Hi. I made it from a nicely curved hazel stick. It basically looked like that. I just seasoned it and carved the tip a little to make it fit.

I've had the original Bushman large and mini for over 30 years . Very good all around camp knives and the mini is particulary good as a skinning knife for large game. The original pig skin sheaths still work great . Thanks for your review and opinions. All the best.

I just discovered you site I am now subscribed. I like your presentation no bull straight talk I am going to view your other videos. By the way I have several Bushman I modified them to accept a paint handle screw tip and built walking sucks for myself and my wife which can easily be transformed into a spear 4-;8 ft long I also built take down rigs for carrieing in back backs which includes a fish / frog gig head. Keep up the great vides.

I share your love for this knife. It is my favorite beater camp/hiking knife, because as you say, it can do virtually anything you could ask of a blade. I've cut down saplings, cleared brush, chopped wood, batoned, made feathersticks, struck ferro rods, picked high-hanging fruit, dressed game, cleaned and dressed poultry, and cut up vegetables and seasonings with this knife. I wrapped the handle with athletic tape to avoid slipping, and the crowning mod was that I looped a piece of paracord through the handle a couple of times to make a guard. I loved it before, but now it is PERFECT to me.

How would a bit of a pinch with a vice up near the blade to make an indexed handle? Keep the far end round?

Not sure if the whole thing is heat treated the same way but if it is, I'm guessing it'll spring back to its previous shape. But it might not.

+Doug's Adventures I see some people do that but in my experience, para cord tends to work itself loose over time. Especially on knife and axe handles where you twist and turn you hand a lot and often push or pull with significant force.

I have a Camillus knife with a thin spine (1/8" or less) that is very sharp, which is great for striking fero rods or scraping wood for fire tinder, but when I use my thumb to assist in cutting, the spine is so thin and sharp it hurts my thumb. It's bad enough that I don't do it any more. Does your knife hurt your thumb when using it in an assist cut, especially where you filed it? Other than this problem, my Camillus is an excellent bushcraft knife, and costs only $10US.

+csh 62 I rarely use my thumb like that with this particular knife. And when I do, I usually use the thumb of my other hand to push on the spine near the tip of the knife for precision so those aren't very powerful pushes. That still can hurt because this knife has a false edge near the tip. When it comes to pushing the spine closer to the handle, I haven't had that problem with this knife but have had with other, even thicker knives with sharp spines. I guess there's always a trade-off.

i see you have no problems with choking up on it for more control.. would consider grinding out a finger choil?.. would that effect the knife and/or grip in any negative way? thank... ordered mine today!!

+CNTrails JMV It might, and probably would, weaken the blade where the choil is ground. May or may not affect the knife in real life but I wouldn't do it.

I love my bushman. It's not pretty, it's actually one of the least appealing visually speaking of all my knives. But if I could pick only one to use in a survival type situation I'd pick it over any knife, even those bushcraft knives that cost hundreds of dollars. That's saying a lot as I'm a knife collector and have owned hundreds of blades. The bushman is pretty much indestructible. You'd have to try really hard to break it. And like you say it can pretty much do any kinda work a person would do with a knife. It's big enough to be an effective self-defense blade. Stick a sapling a few feet long in it and it's something like a sword. Add a few feet to that and you have an effective spear you could easily take big game with. It's only limited by the users skill level. Dollar for dollar it's one of the best values you can find in the knife world. So if your watching this video trying to decide wether to buy one or not I'd highly recommend it. You did a great review imo!

Also, it's a good knife for idiots who like to play with knives because it's rigid. I have my bushman (10+ years at this point I believe) in my kitchen to chop blocks of frozen meat and open cans now. I don't love how it looks but I love and appreciate long term relationship with my little fellow. I believe if you clean it after work you'll pass this piece of metal to your grandkid.

If your worried about your hand sliding up to the blade put a lanyard through the small screw hole in the handle.

Just discovered your channel. So far, I love it. And to keep my hand slipping forewords on knives and a odd few guns, I’ve used leather with tape over it. Just an expedient solution. I usually have lots of leather on hand. But, I guess the para-cord would work as well, or better. I just like leather. And it gives a longer surface to slide, before you run into something unpleasant. And I like most cold steel knives. The bushman, could be better, but it does work very well. In a perfect world, I’d like to see a DLC coating on most of my personal knives. And always a very sharp polished edge-but all my knives do have that. I just had to do that myself. I do like someone that does hands on reviews. Not just sitting at a desk. But occasionally that does this every its place. But you aren’t talking here. You are talking while demonstrating, experimenting, and teaching. That is a sign of a knowledgeable and someone who isn’t afraid to test things, ask questions, or learn things. I like that. I want to know exactly how stuff will perform. Thank you for reviewing in that manner! And I don’t know you, but I’d guess that is a part of your personality. Good channel❗️

Great video, very informative, thank you! I have a question you may know the answer to, about the shape of the knife you use in this video (angled back, making the point centered to the handle) and the other style of the same knife with a flat back making the point even with the edge of the handle. For someone of my skill level, either is going to work equally well for anything I do, but is there a technical reason recognized by experts as to why the different shapes, or is it nothing more than personal preference? BTW, I think one is called "Bushman" and the other (with the angled back) is called a "Bowie Bushman" on the Cold Steel website. Other than the angle they're the exact same knife.

Hi and thank you. Essentially, knives with less belly and the point aligned with the center of the handle should be better at stabbing. More belly is better for slicing and cutting. But whether you're actually going to see/feel a difference in this particular case is debatable to say the least :)

IF you have a problem with the handle rolling or slipping on you . . . I may have another solution for you. I took enough paracord to make a lanyard and handle grip, (I found trying to put a handguard on this a drawback because, it makes keeping it in the sheath difficult) I removed the inner strands so that it is less bulky and tied knots it the cord with a graduated length. I then wrapped the cord so that my fingers fit between it. Finally I put some leather cord over that to make it look nice. I am sure now I have lots of purchase on the handle because, of those knots. :)

Really, someone bought a knife with a hollow round handle made so it fits over a shaft to make a spear...and then complained about it having a round handle? These people shouldn't be allowed to play with any sharp objects. Great follow-up to the initial review, Simon. I don't mind listening to you talk at all. Any thoughts on the clip-point version of this blade?

Random Button Pusher Not only do they complain but they also make and post reviews based on such complaints. This pisses me off because it's misleading and I often watch KZfaq vids before buying a knife to find out something about it. Such reviews are time-waisters at best. I don't have that other version and can't say much about it other than I suspect it should be just as good only not as pretty ;)

Nice video Simon :) As you said, this knife perform well for all kinds of task, I am very impressed! I love your idea to make a parang type handle to transform it into a machete. And it's very cheap, that always a big plus ^^ But it's a bit too big for me. I will maybe buy one as a gift tough ^^ In my opinion there is no perfect knife, and there will always be people to complain about something, after all this is the internet ahaha Thanks for the efforts you put into your videos :) Bye A swiss fan

I guess you could also fashion a spear pole and jam it into the handle to make a spear with this is needed. Makes the knife even more versatile. EDIT: Just saw a heap of YT thumbnails with Bushman knives turned into spears.

Regarding the complaint you mentioned of the knife chipping in extreme cold temperatures, I believe it is possible but likely not unique to just this knife. I once experienced the failure of high quality German manufactured axe in extreme temperatures, upon the axe striking a frozen tree in -40 Celsius temperature a 2” diameter chip broke from the blade destroying the axe. Location of my experience: Northwest Territories, Canada.

The extra thickness of the Bowie Knife causes the wood to split for making firewood. A thinner knife would get stuck in the wood. The Bowie is an extreme tool used for chopping like a hatchet, slicing like a sword, doing the fine work of a small knife with it's tip, a hawkbill knife hook cutting with the back cut. Also was used for self-defese/offense like a shortsword. One knife to do it all.

It is a great knife and I love mine, but I don't carry it anymore because for ME, it turned in my hand constantly when I was chopping with it (I have not tried tape yet but probably should). That is where the round handle really causes problems IMHO. I even tried to flatten the handle with a hammer to no avail. The Condor version has a much better oval handle that I wish Cold Steel would adopt. .

I just brought the normal bushman I was a little bit skeptical on it but brought it any way I made a spear and went back inside. now just watching a few vids. its good to see a good reveiws . makes me feel abit better about spending my money haha

Liked the video mate and sorry that you've had to deal with all of the 12 year old internet trolls. One good thing to do is to stick a Victorinox Farmer inside the handle or in the kit with the Bushman and that will make a great fine carving/larger knife combo.

Wrap a length of wire around the handle . Then wrap tape around that. Wrap a few extra turns of tape around the end of the handle to keep it from slipping back out of the hand . Thats how we do a beater.

I've got the exact same knife, best $23 I ever spent. there's a test of a Walmart Sheffield Bowie on my channel and I use my Bushman to chop into a Frozen stump of seasoned ash so hard the blade bounced off it with no damage to the edge at all. I like your videos and I subscribed.

This video appeared in my feed so I watched it again... now I have to figure out which go-bag this knife is in, and take it out to play 😉 I like the Bushman Knives. There’s one in every bag except my deep-wilderness bag. That one has a Condor Matagi. I believe the Matagi is a better blade for a “bear protection spear”. ...jmho 😎 Hey, are you still making videos in English? Your style is easy to listen to and your videos are nice to watch.

I don't have the Bowie, but I have the Bushman, the mini Bushman, and the pocket Bushman. I've never used them in the out doors, but love them in the kitchen. A cheap (inexpensive) knife that can out perform a lot of high priced knifes. I'll take performance over beauty, any day. "It takes a licking and keeps on cutting".
