Is the Bushmills Black Bush 80/20 a good whiskey? Let's find out!
This is the Bushmills Black Bush 80-20 and despite the name, it's actually quite different to the standard Bushmills Black Bush. While the regular Black Bush is made up of 20% Bourbon Aged Grain whiskey, and 80% Oloroso Sherry Finished Malt, the Bushmills Black Bush 8020 has 80% aged in PX Sherry Casks, which gives it much more of a sherry influence.
It still comes in at 40% ABV which is always a little disappointing, but it's an Airport Exclusive, so it's a 1 Litre bottle!
Bushmills Black Bush 80/20 Tasting notes:
Nose:
Very malty, with biscuits and the distinctive bushmills fruitiness as well as some dark berries which have been soaked in syrup, like Maraschino cherries. Sitting with it a little while reveals some notes of freshly baked banana bread and milk chocolate.
Palate:
By contrast to the nose, the palate is quite light, leading with the lighter fruits like melon and banana. It's still quite malty, with a nice dollop of vanilla cream, but those dark fruits from the nose have taken a definite back seat. There's also a touch of oak, but again, quite light.
Finish:
The finish is quite brief, the lighter fruit notes don't hang aroundf long, leaving the hints of dark fruits and oak to linger on, with a touch of the creamy milk chocolate coming back as the rest fades.
Ultimately, I think this is a nice little whiskey. Do I wish it was above 40%? Of course! That would likely have left the palate and the finish with much more of an impact than the light notes I got here. But it's reasonably priced and if you're fond of Bushmills, and want to try something new, this is a no-brainer (especially if, like me, you find it on sale!).

I'm a total whiskey nerd and this channel is all about Whiskey, Whisky, Bourbon, Rye, Pot Still Whiskey and Single Malt Whiskey. I'm always on the hunt for the best whiskey and love making whiskey review videos. My passion is for Irish whiskey, but I'm open to looking for the best Bourbon or the best scotch too!
I'm an Irishman, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying whiskeys from all around the world, from Kentucky bourbon to Japanese single malts. I also love making cocktails, especially whiskey cocktails (or whisky cocktails) and really enjoy taking a classic recipe and adding my own twist to it, or making simple, 3 ingredient cocktails
