That’s how titles at banks work. In their case they work in m&a for an investment bank. The usual career track is analyst > associate > vice-president > director > Managing director > partner. Bigger banks will have literally hundreds of vice-presidents between their different offices.

​@@WailOfDoomThe point of the scene is that all the cards do look extremely similar (they're pretty much identical apart from the fact that they use different fonts and the shade of white, although different, is barely noticeable) but Bateman's psycopathic narcissism inclines him to have the urge to he the best at everything. EVERYTHING. That includes having the best looking business card, even though it's something that would be completely frivolous to a normal person

@@ok.6539 Its literally, Literally a movie that doesnt have to be watched. You could just also listen to this movie and it could be still considered watched. Since 99% of the movie is talking. 50% of the talkings are at dinner tables where they talk about their work humour and work in a way that we still dont know anything about their work. If the talking partner is with a woman, then its just talking about the work or relationship. Examples: "We should get married" or "we shouldnt see eachother anymore". Either way, its just mostly doesnt contribute for the for the plot. The only relevand dialogues are the ones about the investigation and the ones before the killing

VPs are nothing at an investment bank. It’s one of the lower titles - often comprised of mid 20s know-it-alls who think they will own Wall Street one day. It’s a perfect character detail in this story

It is a parody of the narc, born and raised into narcissism. Parents didn't validate them, in fact, they scolded them if they made them look bad to the other parents. They will forever live empty lives of one-upmanship. It is all fake. Fake friendships, fake meetings, fake titles, fake lives. The entire opening scene of the movie is the foundation of this plight. They are the only ones that care to compete with each other. Narcissists breed new narcissists in a cycle of lack of parental love. The typos in the cards and missing space in Bateman's card, unnoticed by the characters, highlights the fact that the common man, those that Bateman's crew disregard, can see all of their flaws. They are blinded to their own flaws. That is why they all have the typos and no one notices except the audience watching.

the film presents this in a deliberately exaggerated way, but in a way, yes.

If you want to charge someone a lot for your services, it does help to "look the part," and details matter. Appearing to be different from the norm is not always a bad thing, but it's definitely something people will notice. I'm not a rich guy, but I have some experience dealing with higher-level types, and if a "Vice President" handed me a cheap, crappy business card, it would make me suspicious. Conversely, the richest and most powerful people in a room are often the most poorly-dressed, careless individuals in the room, because they aren't trying to impress anyone - they can show up in sweat pants and write their phone number in lipstick on toilet paper, and that's fine, because they're the ones with the real money. In my experience, they also often have bad breath, probably because no one wants to tell them how bad their breath is.
