The issue of agricultural stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana and a thick haze hanging over the National Capital Region are once again grabbing headlines.
So, why didn’t we hear of this problem earlier and why only now?
You may know that the Green Revolution, which ensured food security for India, ushered in high-yielding crops, particularly rice and wheat, starting in the 1960s. The States of Punjab and Haryana took the best advantage of such agricultural innovation.
Why don’t we hear of such problems in other parts of the country? What is the economic impact of stubble burning? Could climate change be contributing to the problem?
For this episode, we shall touch upon a little bit of the dynamics in agriculture, groundwater issues, the role that seasons play, climate change and sure, some economics too.

Perhaps this has been thought through already; can the rice crop residue not be used as biomass ? Let's say the Punjab Govt initiates a scheme to establish biomass based power plants and both the power producer and the farmers can benefit from this scheme.

Also, farmers plant vegetables for a month now before growing wheat for Rabi season. This requires quick prep of the land thus stubble burning. Previously, farmers would let the field rest for this month.

Conservation of water by drip or sprinkler system should be considered urgently, like rice sugar cane too needs a lot of water but it's effect on pollution is less the entire cane is used for sugar and bagass product

With the best IITs, Agricultural Institutes, IIMs & other Management Institutes in India, and with growing startups (and Unicorns), huge Private Corporates manufacturing various products & services, why can't the Central and concerned State governments arrive at the best solutions, and fast. Clearly there's NO WILL and also huge ego-clashes for political one-upmanship. Sick. Meanwhile, no accountability for the related deaths.

What part of the pollution is the crop residue burning causing? I thought the air quality in Delhi was due to construction, and industrial pollution.

You are partially right. But stubble burning contributes to the pollution too

Very soon, in about 10 years, Punjab will run out of water ; they will diversify with no other alternative. Second high time, India worked with Land Institute Kansas USA to grow perennials -wheat and rice which requires less water. and no stubs to take out.

• Rice requires 5000 litres of water to produce a kg of grains. The high water requirement of rice is mainly due to percolation losses.
