Someone rigged this Suburban to set trouble codes and have major problems, yet keep it able to function. It all started from a dead battery. The owner brought it to us for a second opinion after the crook tried to sell them a fuel pump and a new computer! Basically the other mechanic took advantage of the customer and caused a situation when the truck would run and rive normally with intermittent problems like the dead battery. The shop planned to sell the customer more parts like a fuel pump and even a new ECM computer. All of these parts are very expensive and difficult to locate. I looks like the shop planned to sell the parts and services without ever having to replace them. We found that the transmission wasn't shifting correctly and was slipping due to the botched wiring job. The vehicles was driving with the problem and it caused internal transmission damage. We removed the transmission and and found metal on the magnet and in the filter. The customer declined further repairs.

Spent 40 years in the automotive field. 25 years as a automotive instructor, and 20 years working on those darn cars. I am now 83 years old and have been retired for 20 years. I hated when mechanics tried to run a scam on innocent people. I always tried my best to do an honest job for a fair price. You sir, are a boon to our field. You did an honest job. Removing power from the trans will force it start in second, and shift to third, and maxes line pressure. Older GMT400 and GMT325 models definitely had ignition switch issues that caused this symptom. Somebody knew damn well what they were doing, they were going rip someone off. Driving around in 2-3 hi-cap for weeks equals a somewhat stupid customer though. That transmission is probably short on life now too, 4L60E wasn't known for being overly robust.

@james RA Not always, but I would agree w/ your sentiment. I've taken my cars to the same mechanic since I was 17yrs old on stuff I couldn't do. He was always known in the neighborhood as fair, honest, and doing good work. I took my car to him a few weeks ago as it was throwing a code on a sensor that was going to require me taking the power steering pump, water pump, and alternator off to get to (thank you GM!).. Not doing all that. He got me fixed up and mentioned he was retiring from his shop. As we talked he said he'd put a pole barn behind his house and had just had a lift installed, and was going to basically work off craigslist/word of mouth in his retirement years rather than sitting on the corner of a busy ass intersection in the city. Needless to say, I made sure I got his address and phone number.

It's always a pleasure to watch an honest, skilled mechanic show his customers how a scammer is ripping them off. Many customers are barely getting by these days and when their vehicle breaks down they put all their faith and trust in the mechanic working on their vehicle. A good mechanic is honest and forthright and his customer base knows it. Everything i seen you do was a benchmark for a man strongly committed to his trade. Your commitment to your customers is impressive as well as very enjoyable viewing. Just witnessing what real integrity in the trade of auto mechanics looks like is something people will never forget. @flatout5815
@flatout5815 Жыл бұрын
Sounds to me that it possibly wasn't about the truck owner servicing the transmission enough rather that the way the first "mechanic" set the system up it was eating away at the clutch and transmission. If not fixed soon enough the transmission might have been totalled, meaning imo if this is the issue that the owner is owed a new or rebuilt transmission from the scammer including his reimbursement.
@cake2531
@cake2531 Жыл бұрын
@@adotintheshark4848 i think dealerships are the ones that started pushing the idea of "lifetime atf" because it's not technically wrong so they can get away with it. it'll last the intended lifetime of the vehicle (warranty period 5yrs/50k) but also dictate the lifetime of the vehicle because of it. they want you to buy new cars after the warranty period expires.

Yeah that stuff smells nasty when it's been burned by clutch-paks or shaved metal from gears & other tran items. Think maybe this former mech actually put metal shavings from whatever into her transmission fluid? It'd be the same type, she brought it in for an oil change and he added a "special transmission additive" then waited for the whole thing to quit. Plus the blue wire bypassing that relay, shady $h it right there..

Those of us that kept up with new fuel/emission/electronic systems as manufacturers invented new ways of combustion but retained the old school knolwledge are a dying breed. It seems like most of the younger techs just out of tech school only learned the new stuff and get lost on the old school. Carbs were long gone by the time they graduated. Now with sealed transmissions you can't even check if they did anything. I've put white out on the nuts but they can see that and just scratch it off. Pit whatever oil they have even if it's not interested for the car, they don't give a crap about you or your car. You have no idea how many different shops i have taken my car and realized they didn't do their job right, and when I complained they just say they have high volume and they missed it on accident. Over the 38 years of being a tech and stripping, building, many different types/brands of engine in my opinion manufacturers are trying achieve the impossible which is power, lightweight, economy etc and get all these in an engine like this comes at a cost. Years back things were slower heavier etc but rarely did you see failures like we get nowadays. Alot of modern engines won't tolerate neglect or abuse like their forerunners. The V6 isn't the smoothest of engines at best of times unlike the straight 6 which is naturally well balanced statically and dynamically. The current crop of Ford diesels are pretty poor anyway as I've had my filthy mitts on many and seem to be built to a cost and as seen here not very well designed 😔 keep up the great work guys and looking forward to the next video 👍

There are a lot of " mechanics". I brought a Focus in for a recall repair. No check engine light. When I picked it up, since there was no check engine light problem originally when I brought it in, I was shocked to see the check engine light on. The mechanic/dealership did not mention it was on. I looked up on internet what could cause this. One video mentioned that if connectors are not seated properly it would produce check engine light. I opened the hood and saw a connector that was not all the way in (sheer luck that I caught this) and pushed it all the way in. I asked another mechanic (not dealership) if they could let me know why the light is still on. I mentioned what had happened. He said the charge is $100 to determine why the light is on. Well, I continued to drive but my emissions was due so I was desperate to try and figure this out. I went to auto parts store and they tested and gave me the codes that apparently caused the check engine light. They said they could not clear the check engine light and I would have to order a part that could do that. I went to another auto parts store and they printed out what part "possibly" needed replacement, but they were careful to say this might not be the problem. I asked if they sold equipment that could clear the codes and light and they did find one in stock for $50. I bought it and figured out how to clear the check engine light and codes. Oh, my gosh, I was so relieved. I drove it to emissions testing, and no check engine light appeared and it passed inspection. So, all this time, though I luckily caught the problem, the check engine light could not just be cleared by any mechanics that I asked. I seriously do not trust mechanics now. What a racket against innocent consumers like me.

@@2009glories My parents' diesel 4 wheel drive had assorted problems (blown head gasket, etc). Went in to the mechanics for repair. Came back with more problems (DPF blocking up constantly, etc). Dad opened the bonnet, discovered that the mechanics didn't tighten the hose clamps on the duct connecting the turbo to the intake manifold. This of course meant that the engine was getting way less air than the MAF sensor was telling it, leading to over-fuelling and stupendous amounts of black smoke that was hidden by the long suffering DPF, causing it to clog and preventing the regens from working properly. It won't be going back to those muppets.

28:45 for those who don't know, transmission fluid is supposed to be clear/red. It should NEVER look like used oil. There is no combustion chamber or gasoline in the transmission to darken the oil. If it's dark like that, it's burnt from gears and clutches overheating and burning the oil that touches them which indicates a damaged or abused transmission.

The more I think about this one the more it makes me angry. In my estimation, by bypassing the fuel pump relay, the scammer also bypassed a critical safety system. If memory serves me right, the system is designed to turn off the fuel pump relay in any impact that results in deployment of the airbags in order to prevent the fuel pump from spraying fuel all over a hot engine or exhaust system in the event of a wreck that damages a fuel line. If this vehicle had been in such a wreck, a massive fire could easily have been the result.
@choatelodge
@choatelodge 2 жыл бұрын
A very good point, and it makes me think that if this case appears before a magistrate and that point and the evidence supporting it (the introduced wire jumping the fuel pump to remain on) is brought to light then it might go very badly for the mechanic who put his illicit profit ahead of a client and his family's safety. This crook richly deserves it.

Oh not just that, because it was a DIRECT connection with no fuse there was also no overdraw protection on that circuit and no way for the computer to control the duty cycle meaning that pump was running at FULL CYCLE the ENTIRE time the vehicle was running, causing the potential for the pump to overheat or to start an electrical fire from extended run time AND causing excessive wear on said pump.

In a big shop like this one , it’s tough because everyone that comes in is just a number. Lots of pressure to meet $ amount average on each car, and insensitive to have a higher bill for the service writer who may get a percentage or bonus depending. My question is, was the trans making that noise BEFORE the customer took it to that other guy? If it was, the guy might have pulled the fuse for diagnostic purposes and just forgot to replace it...still his fault either way. The jumper wire to the fuel pump making it run 24/7 was certainly not an "accident" so that makes me suspect the fuse was done on purpose as well. The missing relay is very suspicious too. I can't think of any honest reason to remove it.

My grandpa was a mechanic who did all the work on their cars (and he owned a rather ridiculous number of cars - all of them old cars that he bought used for pretty cheap and fixed up). He ended up retiring around the late 2000s because he didn't understand all the computer stuff that were becoming more and more common in cars and he just wasn't able to avoid it anymore. Not a bad run for a farm kid that was born during the Great Depression! Thinking back, I really should have taken my 96 Cavalier to him and had him teach me how to fix it. Or even just paid him to fix it instead of going to various mechanic shops (I suspect Grandpa might have balked at teaching a "girl" to fix cars - us girls were always expected to stay up in the house with Grandma). It's not like Grandpa lived that far away! It was only 30 minutes!

RE " a lowlife mechanic here on KZfaq that was proud he could bill 6 standard labor hours for a job but do it in 4." Customers want to know the damages up-front, and some cars are going to have issues that cause the job to take longer. For example replacing an alternator on a Ford F150 that was dual fuel gas and propane had hoses and wires everywhere, that took me HOURS AND HOURS to work around to do the job, vs. some cars where everything goes smoothly and quickly, e.g., an alternator on a 2001 Chevy Tahoe V8 or a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am V6, both of which have easy-to-get-to alternators that took "15 minutes" to replace. The flat-rate manual averages those out, somewhat. If a mechanic is fast enough to outpace the flat-rate manual, and does a good job, his shop is going to be profitable enough to stay in business. I recall a mechanic friend saying, decades ago, "I made far more money with my pen than I ever did with my wrench". If the job is done right, at a fair price, I'll happily go to that mechanic, and won't be labeling him as a "lowlife".

My wife once took a ford escort that only had 40 thousand miles on it to a fire stone by our home for an inspection. They said it needed 912 dollars in repairs when I told them it only had 40 thousand, they thought the odometer had rolled over . I found marks where some one had crushed the brake pads with vice grips . And I did everything on the list in my garage in less than 30 minutes for 68 dollars. I would have turned them in , but I didn’t know where to .

I took a car I used to own to Firestone. It ended up costing me $4,000.00 to fix the damages, and re do the work they did incorrectly the first time. Firestone couldn't even tell me the sway bar bushings needed replacing when they installed struts. Also, the strut bushings were no good, and had to be replaced which required the removal of the struts they installed. The brake pads they installed were cheap Wagner pads, and only lasted 14,000 miles. The pads were coming apart in chunks, and they damaged the rotors. The only good things Firestone does is sell tires. They also do tell you if your brake fluid needs to be flushed because they test it for copper content. The brake job they did for me was supposed to have a fluid flush because the copper content was 200 parts per million. A year later when I complained about the brakes, they said the copper content was 300 parts per million. A clear indication they did not do the fluid flush. They did nothing during the warranty period to fix my brakes. I took it somewhere else, and they showed me the pads coming apart, and the deep grooves in the rotors from the pads. The second shop installed new rotors, and a Posiq pad. No further problems with the brakes since.

TL/DR - I found another mechanic's sabotage done to an ambulance causing over $10k in damages and losses to the owner The story: I'm in the middle of a similar situation involving a dishonest "mechanic" but the financial damages done are 20+ fold of the ones in this video. A couple of months ago I had a local ambulance company contact me, they were looking for a new mechanic to do the maintenance and repairs for their fleet. The guy they had been using they wanted to part ways with because he was regularly putting them on the back burner plus they had concerns that he may be selling them work that wasn't needed. When I started doing work for them, the other guy still had 1 of their ambulances but wouldn't return it initially because he had already started work on it. From what I was told there was a bit of a confrontation between the mechanic and the owner of the ambulance at that time. A week or so later, the ambulance was returned to the owner but it was running worse than when it was dropped off. It was given straight to me and all I knew at that time was the other guy had done spark plugs, 4 new ignition coils and intake manifold gasket (ford 6.8L V10) and that it was running like shit. When I ran the engine the first time, it had an obvious misfire and a scan revealed misfires on cyl 1, 8 and 10. I first suspected a quality of repair issue as I had already seen poor quality in the guys work on a couple other ambulance, including one that nearly resulted in a fire. Ultimately what I found was cyl 1 and 10 had low compression and cyl 8 had no compression. Draining the oil revealed bearing material suspended in the oil along with a number of metal pieces in the filter. I brought my findings to the owner who wanted to further investigate possible repairs to the current engine before moving forward with a replacement. Ultimately, I found that there was a bolt lodged in the intake runner on cyl 8 that bent the valve and broke the rocker arm and video scope revealed damage to cylinder walls in cyl 1 and 10 result of foreign debris, such as a screw or bolt. Engine was completely trashed and it was obvious sabotage. I feel bad for the guy that owns it because a reman engine is going to run him 4400 and another 1500 for labor. Include the ambulances down time and his total loss is over $10,000. I documented my findings thoroughly, with photos and in detailed writing. Same as you, I give the benefit of doubt whenever I can, but this one was an blatantly obvious case of foul play. I urged the ambulance owner to pursue the case in court and even offered to testify my findings in front of a judge if need be. It remains to be seen what will become of this as we are waiting on the replacement engine still and this is all in progress. This case, more than any other case of shotty workmanship or foul play that I've seen while working in this field, is the case that bothers me the most because of the financial loss involved. The guys that own and operate the company are really good people, not to mention their company provides services that saves lives. And for another mechanic to knowingly cause this kind of financial damage to a company who's purpose is to help people in need and save lives... it honestly sickens me. Anyways, kudos to you for being the honest one in your case. I hope everything works out for your customer.

But you can still have your freedom just use cabs or find a nice neighbor who is reliable and honest and work a seal out with them for a flat rate to drive you where you need to go it'll be a lot cheaper than driving your own with insurance and gas I mean give a neighbor a 20 dollar bill to take you and wait fir you to do tour shopping and take you back home and it'll help them out and you out and it's a good way to get to know some of your neibors too.
