When trying to nail proportions from a reference, we need something to be our unit of measurement. Often, we use the height of the head. Yes, that drawing is wearing paper shorts lol

@lonestarr1490 10 ай бұрын
Everything that works can be an art tip. And I'm sure many people came up with that by themselves, given how intuitive it is. It's about proportions after all, so of course we measure by comparison. Nevertheless, it's a good tip for everyone new to drawing.

I have a question, if we were to draw a body in other perspectives like from the birds eye view or worms eye view, can we still use the same measurements? :0
@StanProkopenko

Yes you take a measurement of the head from that perspective and you measure things from thay perspective. The relationships change when you change angle or pose, but the idea of measuring does not.

This is one of the few times that I actually disagree with proko. By definition, proportions are how any one part relates to the whole or any other part. One ruler isn’t as useful as having the ‘right’ ruler. Measuring the entire body in heads is tedious and fails when foreshortening is introduced or cartoon stylization. The smaller your ruler, the more times you have to measure. The more times you have to measure, the more human error you introduce. You want keep in mind as many comparisons as possible and use the right one for the right moment. The humerus vs the rib cage. The humerus vs the forearm + half a hand. The upper torso vs the lower torso (clavicle to bottom of rib cage = bottom of rib cage to crotch). Head to crotch is roughly crotch to ankles keeping in mind a big head throws that off a bit. If I could only measure against one non-exact unit, I’d be *more* prone to error. Measure the Empire State Building in inches using only a 4 inch ruler… but why when we know 12 inches make a foot and three feet make a yard? Wouldn’t the yard stick make *more* sense? So let’s say you’re drawing an indoor scene. How tall should the roof be? Well standard in the US is 8ft ceilings and people are just under 6ft tall on average. So block out your room and use a 6ft person (3/4ths the height of any part of the wall) as your proportional ruler for objects in the room. In this example you use one measurement to create a lot of things and it works well enough because your ruler is appropriately sized. Homes *were* made with people in mind, after all. It makes sense that they can be measured using people. What about something scaleless? A grand sci-fi or fantasy structure made by some unknown civilization or in honor of a long forgotten king? This is where we get general and multi-step: - we know how big a person is - we know a grown tree is pretty big - we know a mountain is huge The question then becomes "how do I want the viewer to feel" instead of "how big is this nonexistent thing." Having this structure dwarf mountains far in the background with a person sitting under a tree in the foreground gives a stepwise feel to it. Couple it with some three point perspective and you’ll get a grand feeling by gazing up or a feeling of helplessness or insignificance by gazing down at it. Use more than one ruler. It helps to confirm if it stacks up against multiple measurements. As the old saying goes "measure twice and cut once."

That's a lot of comment, there! Shorts are never going to cover the TOTALITY of any concept as big as measuring. This is one method of a million that you whip out at different times for different purposes while establishing a drawing. As mentioned in this video, it's not the end all be all and this is just intended to get people thinking about measuring. You can check out the free longer video, or give the even longer paid version a watch. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z7BnhbSnsNS7lmg.html

Sorry this is not work l,riley not work and loomis not work because perspective and every body is diferent.only few inches closer or further and this is big diference.i dont know if you not learned about perspective or ignored.hands and lgs is bigger proposition that heat because closer.and heal smaller because further also leg is under angle not work.Also 7 and half head not working because every body is diferent 6 to 8 head.People diferent proportion-long legs,short legs,long torso.....This is good for sketches like loomis but useless as real person art.Also this is long way how to learn because you must learn about how to draw eye ,nose,ear,lips,body hands...10years later -ok im done now i must learn how to draw animal or enviromental,building,landscape....Only you must learn about ange a proportion-no head or body but about what you see like old masters.People go to outside and sketch real peolple .Go to bus station or park,beach....But real people with natural light not photography with 10 light source
