I have bought an 05 plate 1.9 t5 8 months ago. Similar condition and same miles. I didn't change the engine out but did head gasket, new rad and heating matrix plus cambelt and pump. It's been running great ever since. It's going in soon to have a couple of rubbers changed as it also has a nocking sound. Mine is a fully converted camper and I love it.

Personally I can never find bearing play on a wheel, just breathe relief when mot man drops her back on garage floor the 😅 Very clean van pleased for you. I bought a t5 the 2.5 spares or repairs with a bit of mot about 10 months ago. I caught the sleeper train up drove it back from Scotland 546 miles changed oil up there.. he who dares ha ha I would check the shock mounts on rear I had to weld mine up but it was from the coast. Will check your FB page when I sort fb on my phone 👍 great video thanks

Know lots of transit and vivaro owners always saying vw transporters are overated overpriced rubbish but they are just superbly built solid vans, driven t4s, caddys, t5, 5.1 now on a t6, all have been overloaded and over worked averaging 120k every 3years but never given any issues. This video is great.
@YTDTETV
@YTDTETV Жыл бұрын
Hey bud yes your spot on before owning one I called it T5 tax as the price difference from say a Vivaro to a T5 is massive but it’s for good reason, Vivaro bodies are ok but engines and other bits not so good, transits don’t even come into it as they have severe rust and engine issues. I was blown away by the condition of this. Really appreciate the comment thank you 👍

I have the same one. Had 360.000 km on it bought it with a blown headgasket. Drove it as is for 20 k before even replacing the head gasket. Then the 5th gear left the station and now its done 390 k. Im super impressed by this car. Original calipers. Original arms. Original dampers on front. For the mot i did disks at the back and pads front and back. The only thing i could say is a weak point is the suspension damper mounting bracket on the back. Theyre just really thin on steel and they get alot of salt up there. Alltough its a fantastic car. Soon done 400 k and it runs as clockwork.

I’m so glad you picked up one of these as it’s exactly what I have except mine is an 06 and when you said you knew what the problem was when you pick the van up, I knew exactly what it was as i had my head done recently… and running like new again…. you have inspired me to get mine emptied out and finished off as a camper as I have a high roof and a custom double bed up top…. looking forward to further episodes. I’ve also had my van about 14 years and it has been astonishingly brilliant tough rugged and unwaveringly reliable…. It’s really mostly the car drivers moving into this van scene complaining that it doesn’t drive like a car. Thanks again.

That’s a brilliant base vehicle for a project you done well there! Playing with my suspension was the biggest mistake I did, I initially put some coil overs on which where too cheap. Looks the biz but shite so taken them off and went for 40mm lowering springs with standard shocks. B14’s all the way, I’ve had mine lowered 80mm on 20’s for the last 7 years (and I bought them 2nd hand about 3-4yrs old and I’m literally about to replace them with another set of 2021 b14’s….also second hand, I’m from Yorkshire you can tell)….the ride is great considering the van gets used for all walks of life….if you’ve for the wedge opt for the b14 Komfort which gets all the rave reviews….basically a new more dynamic spring that offers a smoother ride despite riding low 🤙🏻😀

@@williamoakes664 Hi, ive put mine on and not really impressed to be honest, i was expecting better for the money. The van looks good and now level as it used to look like it was dragging its arse as its a camper but it feels really firm on the road, every small crack in the road feels like my van is falling apart. Im on 18’’ wheels with a 45 profile on the tyre and thinking of going to 50. I also did the lower bush modification which probably makes it harder too 🤔

Excellent vid, I am looking forward to see your progress on this Van. As a former Ship Repair Welder, I can vouch for your comments on the surface rust. It always looks worse than what it is, a good blast or wire brush, a coat of paint and it will be spot on. I really enjoy your vids and down to Earth approach and comments. You are lucky with the anti roll bars. On my Volvo, the Brackets are moulded on and the Bar is Makers part only. I have had my rear one replaced and the Bar was £282. Fantastic video! I have a T5 2005, had it almost from new, 127k miles. I am now getting MOT advisories on the corrosion of brake lines and handbrake cable so it was great to see this on your video so I can locate them. Can I wire brush this corrosion off and treat/paint or would it be better to replace? My garage haven't suggested new parts but I would rather get on top of things so no surprises later! My van is also my camper and to know that I am doing what I can to keep my van going for as long as possible, is really important. Thank you

Hey bud thank you appreciate that 👍 yours is good miles still plenty of life left, yes you can clean and repaint the brake pipes, you can use a wire brush and sandpaper. When you rub the paint off you’ll see if there is pitting in the pipe, if so then replace but if you rub them down and they are smooth then they are saveable 👍👍

I've been thinking of getting a T5 for a few years now to replace my T4 I've had for 15 years. It's starting to suffer from the old tin worm and really needs a bit of restoration work. Not half as bad as some I've seen but needs panel work all the same. Finding someone who knows how to do it properly is hard so I'm thinking I might replace it as I can't bear to see it rust away before my eyes. I've also been put off getting a T5 by other T4 owners saying T5's aren't as good, build quality is crap, more expensive this and that. People saying they had a T5 but went back to a T4 etc etc so I've hung on to mine plus I've had it such a long time it's hard to part with. Great video and good to see they do last well especially after high miles. My T4 is an 03 (done 187k) so not that much older than yours and it's got more rot showing through sadly. You've got a good van there by the looks. it'll be great to see what you do with it 🙂
@YTDTETV
@YTDTETV Жыл бұрын
Hey Matt 👍 so I done a part resto on a T4 at the beginning of my channel and you are right they are built really well and they are a very good van. I’ve driven a few T4’s and they do drive nice even compared to a T5. It’s hard to part with a motor after owning it for a long time so I understand, one way to think about it would you be happy to keep on with your T4 if it was still in good condition or would you still have the desire for a T5? Answering that question would decide weather you pump some money into yours or weather you upgrade. I can confirm that this T5 seems to be built well and the quality of the original parts have done so well. It does need a lot of love and new parts but it’s definitely built well from the factory. What panels on yours are rusty? Have you seen my build series in the T4? Thank you for your comment.
@matttaylor1372
@matttaylor1372 Жыл бұрын
@@YTDTETV Yes, I'd be happy to keep the T4 if it didn't need body work, welding and paint. I'm the second owner of it, got it at 4 years old. It was previously owned by a VW dealership so was a workhorse but like your T5, not heavy use but had covered 94k miles. It still has its original panels and paint, no clag anywhere. Wheel arches have started going and drivers side rear arch/sill near the jacking point (common place). A few areas around front wheel arches and sills and of course a bit along the sliding door step, not needing a new step just a few areas dealing with, one being the lip where the door seal sits. Overall it's really solid underneath. Some I've seen on the internet are absolute rotters. I recently had a bloke do a couple of patches for the MOT but he's made a right mess. It's good enough for MOT but needs cutting out and doing again, it's terrible. Basically the van needs a lower half restoration. The original paint is still very good otherwise. It does have a window in the sliding door but not the drivers side, I like the panel van look and couldn't face having a window cut in side of the van. My thinking was if I want a proper panel van again just change the door for a solid one 😆 It's also the 5 cylinder 2.5 TDI 102 hp model, something I knew I wanted from the start. I have only ever driven one T5, a 64 plate some years ago but I remember it drove nice. My old T4 still drives nice, all original ride height, wheels etc. I've tried lowering and alloys but didn't get on very well with excessive tyre wear etc. Sometimes I just think it might be better to sell it on and buy something newer that doesn't need welding and start again with a basic conversion for camping and days out but as the sayings go, I don't want to jump out of the frying pan into the fire and better the devil you know ! There is only one guy I know of in my area that does welding and panel replacement that I fully trust(he doesn't do finishing and paint though) but he's got a fair bit of work on. I tried to get him to do my MOT repairs before Christmas but he hasn't got the room. Tied up with MK2 Escorts ! I have seen the resto you did on the black T4, that's what got me into your channel 🙂 excellent job you did too 👍
@YTDTETV
@YTDTETV Жыл бұрын
@@matttaylor1372 so it’s first half life being owned by Vw it would have been looked after well, it sounds like it’s going in the same places as the black one we did. I see a lot of comments people saying it’s hard to find people that can finish panel and paint nice, it’s shame someone did a poor job on your van but I guess it kept it going another year. I’ve seen similar work done down here plates just stuck over the top with really thick welds. I agree I like the panel van look to 👍 ye just another sliding door with no window in would do the job. Ooo the 5 cylinder one they go well, they sound sweet with an exhaust on to. I drove a couple of the 1.9 69hp ones and they are super slow. It’s all about standard suspension for ride comfort for sure nothing worse than a lowered motor then bouncing down the road. You are so right about better the devil you know I say it to my customers all the time they spend money on the vehicle then say I’m going to sell it before something else goes wrong I say we’ll what if you buy a new car and have to do the same work you’ve just had, madness. I used to be a Ford man and like a mk2 escort but I’m not the biggest fan of rust and welding. If it’s just a handfull of panels and a good bit of paint around the lower half maybe a few extra bits you would probably be looking at around £2000. The garage just down from me that I use his spray booth he would be the one to do the job your looking for quality wise. It’s nice to stick with a vehicle but it is always nice to upgrade and get a newer model.

@@YTDTETV It's certainly difficult finding a body shop willing to do the work and of course knowing if they will do it properly. Everyone says "Buy a Welder" as if it's that simple. Ironic thing is, I have a welder (not a particularly good one) and some equipment to cut/grind/Compressor etc and I have had experience of welding but I've not done it for so long it's a case of lack of confidence, Somewhere to do it, Time etc etc. Plus, I'd like it done correctly. Yes, those guys near you would be ideal but sadly you are about 170 miles away from me 😥otherwise I'd seriously consider it. Like you said I've got an MOT on it now which I hadn't before the "Patchwork" lol but there's time now to have a think on the next step. You never know I might end up with a van like yours, one may just come along at the right time. I'm looking forward to seeing yours progress and I'm excited for you. You’re missing rear lower spring rubber cups. Front wishbones, if you re-bush - either poly from PSB or, get rear t32 bush (non-voided oe part without A at end of number) same dimension oe bushes not expensive. Oe roll bar bushes are cheap. Balljoints, drop links, TCAs - Meyle HD Lowering springs - h&r (their kits have a standard and h/d spring for front and rear and the 4 kits are made up of those combinations - standard front + h/d rear for your lwb) or eibach - two 30mm kits standard and h/d, avoid h/d. If budget stretches I’d suggest the eibach 50mm kit with coilover rear adjusters from likes of transporter hq Exhaust silencers are double skinned and last for ever, get a big crusty but just remove crusty part of outer skin as required. 18” wheels with 255/45-18 103 are ideal for daily (amarok has same stud pattern and larger alloys / steels that are a direct fit), 20s look great but are a pain for daily.

great vid mate im up north what is a reasonable price to pay for a high mileage like this ?

Hey bud thank you 👍 I paid £2k for this one, this one was owned by a carpet fitter so it’s tidy, a builders van or something similar might be a bit more beaten up but I’d rather spend a few hundred more quid on a tidyer one to save hassle 👍

Hello mate, thanks for video. I need to pick your brain - I’m looking at a 2007 VW Transporter 1.9 TDI PD T30 LWB, it’s a full Campervan with pop top etc. - it’s priced just under 13K and has done 185K miles. I don’t know much about mechanics and the reliability of these vehicles, is it worth biting the bullet and purchasing do you think? And if the answer is yes, what’s the worst case scenario and how much should I have aside in case that worst case scenario occurs? Thanks for your time in advance mate

Hi bud 👍 the 1.9 is the best engine in my opinion in the T5 and 185k miles is still very good. My head gasket failed just shy of 300k and I believe it’s because the anti freeze wasn’t change enough then the coolant rusted out the head gasket. If it was changed very few years it would still be running mint now. The build quality of these is very very good. One thing about them I’ve seen is the 5 speed gearbox’s same as mine can let go and replacement can be around £1500-£2000. Mine still works great on the mileage but definitely wanted to mention. The money doesn’t sound bad at all as a pop top is £5k alone. If you don’t buy that one and keep looking don’t buy a 2.5 one the engines fail a lot.

@@YTDTETV top man, thank you very much for getting back to me and elaborating on the above that’s very helpful mate. Unfortunately this one sold literally hours after being posted but I’ll definitely keep an eye out and won’t shy away from higher mileage ones. Happy travels and once again thank you for your reply bud!

On my T5 I had to pull out the old roller at the back? (towards the rear of the van) as there is a plate there you also have to remove in order to get the roller out, and new One in? Also why not change out the heater dials for newer Aluminium set (see my channel for a review and fitting guide) 😁

Hey bud thank you for the tip the last one i changed was on a transit and it came straight out so I might be wrong with this one. Your the second person to mention the ally heater knobs and I’ve since looked and like them, I shal be buying a set 👍 thanks for the comment.

@@YTDTETV If you want to see how I fitted the Aluminium dials, check my channel, I'm doing a V5 campervan conversion right now. And yes you need to get the sliding door all the way open, and remove a small plate inside the roller channel, this allows the roller to pop out of the channel 😁
