Continuing our series on buying a house in France, today’s video is on our viewing experience. We made two house-hunting trips to France - the first in 2018 and the second in 2020. We discuss the pros and cons or staying in a campervan vs gites (holiday homes), how we found the viewing process and we also offer some advice if you’re planning your own trip.
The first video was on choosing a location. If you haven’t already seen it, you can watch it here • Buying a house in Fran...

Welcome to Living in the Loire, we are a young family in rural France, renovating previously poorly converted barns. We aim to do most of the work ourselves, being as frugal and as eco as possible! We are learning on the job and we hope to share the skills we pick up along the way. When possible we will take you on a tour of the region (the garden of France) sharing with you the numerous chateaux, towns and markets. As well as the house we will be transforming the garden, bringing part of it back to its previous use as a potager. This is our dream and one of the main reasons of leaving the city to move to the countryside in France. Join us on our journey!

* Bonus tip: Most of the time the agents will have more photos (and a plan of the land (cadastral plan)) than they're able to show on the listing. If you like the look of a property you can email them to ask for this as that extra bit of information may make the difference between you wanting to view the property or not.

I am a retired American. I've loved France since childhood when my father took us to the village he was stationed in while in the Army. Since retirement I've considered moving to France because my country and specifically my state has become an environmental disaster of traffic, congestion and violence. The Loire valley is a favorite area of mine. I stay in Nantes and Tours. Your advice for engaging a local agent and about the offer process is helpful. I will be buying a place this summer I am sure. Thank you and your lovely family for making these videos. I will watch all of them.

Lovely video (and the 1st which I need to go back and like.) We had a similar experience 17 years ago. Immo said as we were leaving the awful property we'd view, "Enjoy the rest of your holiday!" I was fuming.

Thanks Kathy. Yes a house hunting trip certainly isn't a holiday! I think some were definitely sceptical we could afford to buy the houses we were looking at because we were in a campervan 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hello. Yes, you would need to learn some French (or hire someone to do all the communicating for you).

Be honest with yourself about how handy you are. Can't hit a nail with a hammer? Reno may not be for you unless you have a big budget. Remember there is no such thing as one single perfect property. How many compromises are you willing to make? Make a list of what is most important - no compromise down to "willing to be flexible".

I’m thinking very strongly about my friends in Europe as the invasion of the Ukraine has commenced. I can imagine that this is going to have economic, social and physical safety implications. If you can pass on any information that I may not be to access, I would appreciate it. I have no idea how France is responding to this cris and if there are plans to accommodate possible needs of refugees. You are both naturals in front of the camera. Please spoof the property owner who was trying to correct the earth’s axis.😂😂😂💗🙏💗🙏💗

For everyone the economic consequences will be felt. Worldwide inflation is a big factor in us reigning in our spending and not doing costly renovations. It’ll be a tough decade for sure and without sounding like the crazy guy in the vid, if you can, own your house outright and rent/buy land to grow food. 🌱

Still better off in France, though. Ukrainian migrants are fitting in very well, many are offered free housing and jobs. Their children entered school very fast sometimes coached by a fellow bilingual speaker of their age. Everything is made easy so that they have the opportunity to heal themselves. Here in Paris, we hear more and more people speaking Russian. I passed by many cheerful Ukrainians. My Russian friends are just very conflicted, these days. There is a dish from Quebec, called “poutine”. Some stupid guys smashed restaurants bearing that name ...
