My shop machenic showed me a mint S600 with less than 25,000 miles on it...the guy bought it overseas from the Japanese market. I have heard that place have loads of W140 that are in mint condition that can be found....never really though much for the rumor...until I saw one....it was truly amazing to see it in show room condition.

I am looking for a W140 S500 for my spouse..and here in the USA they offer them up to 1999 models. However..I do not want the AIRMATIC (air suspension) since they are expensive to repair. I have read the AIRMATIC was introduced in the 1999 W140..but was also told that in the USA the 1999 was really the 1998 in Europe. So I am confused as to which W140 will not have the AIRMATIC for USA models. I do not want anything prior to 1998 to avoid the biodegradable wiring harness problem. Any advice please? Thanks!

Biodegradable insulation was used from 1992-1995. W140 doesnt have airmatic suspension but hydraulic suspension and it is used in S500 models 1996 and later, S420 as an option, S600 1996 and later, but it is easy to convert the car to a regular suspension, I did it on 3 of 11 of my w140's. It will cost around $300 in parts (new springs and shocks).

@@mikey380sx Last time I drove the 300SE I believe it was around 22-25mpg in rural areas. And you have have to be very specific with the year of the car because of Mercedes switching to a bio-degradable engine wiring harness, (yes thats a real thing) and that combined with the issues that the electronic throttle body had it makes it extremely expensive to repair. You would have to know how to wire an engine yourself to be honest with you. Mine failed at 140,000 miles. both the harness and throttle body, as well as neither are replaceable you have to custom build it. If the seller can prove with paperwork the job was already done by mercedes, BUY THE CAR! If there is no proof, don't bother.. Again unless you can wire a car then its no issue lol just alot of time and translating German schematics to English

W100 Soft close power is in principal hydraulic Accu .... W140 is just an air pump in rear of rear box...(15 times less strenght)..

There's a memory saver you can buy before you take out your battery, you'll hook up the memory saver to the positive and negative terminals,unscrew the terminals,take them off with the memory saver connected and put the new battery in with the memory saver on,it's saves all memory to the computer and the pre set radio stations...

You can replace the airmatic with standard coil springs. If you google a bit, you will find a kit, which includes a electronic airmatic system emulator, so the car thinks the airmatic is still there and won't give you any fault codes. You may then sell the airmatic system to someone, which should pay for the coil spring concersion. The airmatic compressors are very valuable.

I couldn't resist you question. Not Airmatic, more complicated/expensive hydropneumatic self-leveling option available for the rear suspension - same option as for W123 and W124 Estates. I have all of them in my collection. W126/W140 preference - they represent two distinct eras of the automobile. . . The W126 is an elegant twilight example of an Analog car with a few toes in the digital era, whereas the W140 is an elegant dawn example of a digital car with one foot in it's analog past. IMHO neither is better. I might resonate more with the analog for its cleverness and simplicity - or, HOW features and capabilities are realized with resourceful engineering. The digital though, always wows me with how MANY things it can do and how well it can do them. But the complexities of how those features and capabilities are realized means replacing formerly repairable components when they wear. Cheap bushing rebuild of a control arm for example, becomes arm replacement. Or repairable injection mechanism becomes electronic component replacement. Environmental legislation in the 90s affected the W140 as well. In the US Water-based paints and biodegradable wire insulation were mandated with short phase-in periods so the finish and wiring quality of the W140 is understandably inferior to those of the W126. So could you be satisfied with just A Rolex Submariner or just a smart-watch? I have to have both. The S600 is a doomsday vault. If your mission takes you into urban enemy territory on a Monday morning, take the 600. You'll keep your calm and your clan will survive. The 560SEL though, sings the song of a siren. If its a weekend out-of-town to the mountain cabin or wine country, take the 560SEL. Both are German engineering fine art. Both have earned their places.

I found a white 300 SD Turbodiesel for sale one day on craigslist. Thank God I didn't buy it. Those 3.5 OM603s are known for having cylinder problems. Ovaling cylinders is what happens later on and the head gasket goes on those. The 3.0 didn't have those kind of problems but it still had some problems

@@auto_kevin9731 Yes...you probably dodged a bullet Years ago ..1998...I bought a 1992 300SD. I did buy an extended warranty at the time thank goodness. My engine its rods and they ended up having to replace the entire engine with Mercedes rebuilt longblock crated engine...$14K the warranty company paid for that claim I kept the car about another 3 years and traded it in Unless I saw that the engine had been replaced in one of those I would run for the hills

Only pre-1995 models had that issue. Issue fixed on post-1995 models. I have a 1993 400 SEL. I had mind fixed for under $2500 Canadian dollars. Used improved MB replacement part. The original AC failed because it was made with two different metals...which cause it to fail. New one is made from one kind of metal only....still working great after having fixed 5+ years ago.

I really don't think that W140 had airmatic suspension even in the last years of production, the airmatic was introduced in the newer W220 model. The W140 models can be equipped with the hydraulic suspension only on the rear axle.

From what I understand, you are correct. In one episode of Top Gear, Jeremy, I believe is his name, tested the 600 SEL with the optional four-place seating that was very rare and mentioned an air suspension option forthcoming but I do not believe it ever became a reality until the 220 model. My 1992 600 SEL has hydropneumatic suspension, which needs to be repaired/replaced due to its age but each rear "shock" is $1100 and that doesn't include the capacitors, one for each side. Once they are replaced, the vehicle should just float. I would not be concerned with the suspension system being air prior to the 220 on the 140. I just have not seen it. Check on Mercedes Benz Forum.

You are one VERY lucky individual. I have a 1992 purchased in 06/2015 with 81,000 miles. Had seen more garage time than road time apparently. I have spent well over $5000 so far and just had the original wiring harness replaced - I had be assured that BOTH wiring harnesses were replaced prior to my purchase and if I had known then what I know now, I would have probably stayed away. I was able to read the volumes of information from the four previous owners of this car and one of them spent in excess of $20,000 on this vehicle. The last owner to sell it for parts, I believe, was a female who only got $2500 for a running V-12. Yes, the throttle bodies still need to be rebuilt and the rear suspension needs to be replaced but I love this thing. It is STILL amazing to drive. I can only dream of what it was like to drive when new.

if it's in good condition then yes, however it can have electronic problems because of the biodegradable wiring harness

it is reliable, so if you don't need more powerful engine, then it's a good choice

Stanislav Georgiev it didn't come with 606 engine. the diesel engine on w140 was crap.606 was ok.they also had thier moment of head gasket and leak coolants.and once a while oil pump failure ( pump chain breaks)

Actually the problems were with the older 3,5 liter diesel engine the om603, which was terrible. The om606 used in the facelift w140 should be fine. Ive seen w210s taxis equipped with the om606 surpassing 1 millions kms with proper maintanance...

Olajat zabálhatja mindkettő, hengerfejes is lehet mindkettő: főleg ha valamelyik előző tulaj "ugyes" volt. Az A8-nál a vezérmuszíj cserére oda kell figyelni, a W140-nél nem mer ott lánc van ami sokat kibír.
