The Passat B6 has been both reliable and unreliable. The first models made between 2005 and 2008 had more problems than the ones made between 2008 and 2010. When it comes to diesel engines, although the 1.9 TDI (BLS, BKC, BXE) is considered to be the most reliable engine, the technology it uses is quite old, it isn't very smooth, it's quite loud and its internals are not as strong as the ones in older 1.9 TDI engines (131 HP ones), especially in the case of the BXE, which is known for throwing rods through the block. The 2.0 TDI PD engines (BMP, BKP, BMR and so on) are somewhere between good and bad. Their main problem were the fuel injectors which were of bad quality from the factory. Most of them have had them replaced under warranty. VW also replaced them for free untill 2016, even if your car didn't have warranty anymore. Check for service recall stickers or check the service book itself, because there are rare cases where they still need replacing. Also, the oil pump is different than the one in the 1.9 TDI, because it also uses a balancer which makes the engine run smoother and quieter, but all the engines made before 4th Nov. 2009 have the oil pump with the 77mm balancing shaft. The problem is that the hexagon shaped shaft starts to get round, and even though it is very cheap to replace (the part itself costs about 6 euros where I live) it is a better idea to get the pump fixed. There are two options: The first and in my opinion the best option is to get it fixed by a specialised service where they enlarge the place where the shaft goes so that the newer 100mm shaft fits. This keeps the engine running smooth and quietly and eliminates the problem so you don't have to change the shaft every once in a while and where I live it costs around 150 euros to do this operation (the engines made after 4th Nov. 2009 no longer have this problem, as they come from the factory with the 100mm shaft). The second method to fix the issue would be to replace the 2.0 TDI pump with the 1.9 TDI pump as it is stronger and doesn't have this kind of problems. The disadvantage is that the engine isn't as smooth and you can feel the vibrations more inside. I don't know exactly how much this costs but I'm guessing it can't be much more than the first option. The later 2.0 TDI common-rail units can suffer from HPFP failure, which could be very expensive. This can happen from various reasons, such as bad quality fuel or not priming, using the diagnostic, the HPFP after changing the diesel fuel filter. These two reasons are enough for the pump to start producing metal shavings (very small bits of metal produced by the HPFP's cam), which could lead to HPFP and fuel injectors failure. This would mean a quite hefty repair bill, so I'd advise you not only to check the fuel filter housing for metal shavings, but also the fuel pressure regulator on the pump itself, because most of the times, you'll see the shavings there first. It's just a matter of unscrewing 2 bolts and unplugging a wire, so no need to take it to a mechanic. If you are unlucky, and the pump is going bad, I'd advise you to drive the car only if absolutely necessary and have the original Bosch CP4.1 HPFP replaced with the stronger Bosch CP3. It's quite expensive, but it's something a lot cheaper than potentially having to replace not only the pump, but the injectors as well. Obviously, this operation needs to be done in a service, as the fuel lines will need some cleaning as well. Luckily, it's quite a popular retrofit, so it shouldn't be to difficult to find what you need (from what I've read, it's also slightly quieter and better for tuning the engine). The electric parking brake can become a problem with any car, that's why I recommend you to activate it only when it is necessary (when you are on a hill for example). Overall, I would only avoid the cars made before 2008 before the very small "facelift" they did to the car 2 years before the B7 was launched (2010). These cars can be recognised from having the white instrument cluster rather than the blue one. The newer ones don't have as many electrical problems and the engines are a lot stronger. Engine codes with oil pump problems: CBAA, CBAB, CBBB, BVF, BNA, BRF, BPW, BLB, BRE, BRD, CAGC, CAGB, CAGA, CAHB, CAHA, BLR, ECD, ECE, BRT, BSS, BWW, BMV, BMA, BMP, BKP, CBAC, BMR, CBBA, BHV. (none of these would have the problem, if manufactured after 4th Nov. 2009) These engines can be seen in the following cars: Audi A3, Audi A4 (B7), Audi A4 (B8), Audi A5, Audi A6 (C6), Audi Q5, Audi TT, Dodge Avenger, Dodge Caliber, Chrysler Sebring, Jeep Compass, Seat Alhambra, Seat Exeo, Skoda Superb, VW EOS, VW Golf (Mk6), VW Passat (B6/7), VW Passat CC, VW Sharan, VW Tiguan. I might have missed some cars and from what I've heard the PD engines have also been used in some Mitsubishi's. If I made some mistakes, please correct me.
@radu2054
@radu2054 5 жыл бұрын
Generally yes. From what I've heard, they're quite strong. Just be sure it has been properly looked after. Also, be sure to only use high quality fuel in it (98RON), because they tend to be quite sensitive when it comes to petrol, and the CEL will light up. Also, if you were thinking of installing LPG, it is very expensive because of the FSI's direct fuel injection. (fuel is injected directly into the cylinder, instead of it being injected through the intake valves)

@@radu2054 Any thoughts or a heads up on an 08 Passat 3.6 4Motion I'm looking to purchase this week?
@radu2054
@radu2054 5 жыл бұрын
@@Soulslider70 Hi, unfortunately I know almost nothing about VR6 engines (such as the 3.2 and 3.6), so my only advice would be to make sure it has been looked after properly. From what I know, it requires a bit more attention than an I4 engine. Make sure the service history is complete, that the car hasn't been crashed (it's quite powerful, so chances are it has been driven quite vigurously), and so on. You should also pay attention to the Haldex rear differential (no strange noises and regular service) and the DSG gearbox (must be serviced every 4 years or 60 000 km - about 35 000 miles). It is a must to make sure the gearbox is good, because if anything goes wrong with it, it will be very expensive to repair/replace. Also, when it comes to general faults, check to see if the ignition lock works properly (if it works very slowly and/or a warning message appears regarding the steering lock, it might need replacing and where I live it costs around 200$ to fix it). To avoid this problem in the future make sure to stop the engine with the steering wheel dead straight and whenever you start/stop the engine, insert and remove the key with care - the key should go in and come out the ignition in 3 "steps" or "clicks". The first one doesn't seem to do anything, the second one unlocks/locks the steering wheel (a yellow warning light of a steering wheel should appear every time) and the third one is the ignition. Also, if it's an estate (Variant), look for rust around the tailgate. Also, expect to see quite a lot of stone chips on the front of the car, since Passats usually do lots of miles on motorways. If the car has Bixenon AFS headlights, you should know that a HID bulb costs a lot more to replace than a normal bulb, and it is recommended to do this operation only in a service, since HIDs work with very high voltages. Also, in many cases even after changing the bulbs themselves, you will not get a much better visibility and that is due to the fact that the projectors have gone bad. The only way to replace them is by removing the glass from the headlight which is not an easy job and the best solution would be to have them repaired by someone who specialises in such things (this will happen to pretty much any car that uses HIDs and projectors). Also, if you want to remove the headlights, regardless of them using halogen bulbs or xenon bulbs, the front bumper and the grill have to be removed. If the car has been fitted with sports suspension, expect to hear some rattling plastics inside the vehicle (usually around the glovebox and the door cards, which by the way, have some very fragile clips, so be careful if you want to remove them; if you do break them, you can buy clips for a low ammount of money). When you turn on the A/C, if one side is cold and the other is hot, chances are the V159 motor is faulty. Sadly, this is pretty much all I can tell you, since, as I said, I don't know much about VR6 engines. Where I live, 98% of B6s are diesels. You should try reading on forums more about them.

Thanks for that revue! I love Volkswagen Passats! I have two, a 2008 Passat Kormfort and 2017 SE with technology! I’m always a little worried about my 2008 Passat because I’ve had two oil leaks since I bought it 12 years ago. It also tends to burn a lot of oil. The dealer says put in a quart of oil every 1000 miles but it think I put in a quart every 300 miles but the engine runs good at 74k miles!! Yes I barely drove it in 12 or 13 years!

I have a B6 Passat FSI (2008). My HPFP cam follower was worn through, as well as the fuel pump itself damaged. Watch for the turbocharger recirculation valve failing (I replaced mine). Also make sure the dipstick seals into the tube when inserted, as this causes a vacuum leak and CEL. I noticed my back tires were cupping, I’m assuming because of the suspension. Don’t forget to check the CV boots as well. They crack.

I owned this car 3.6L V6 FWD Version, and the things I had to replace at 165,000 Miles were: Rear brake caliper, Front Sway bar links, Front Wheel bearing, Passenger side door mirror, Rear third brake light $200(Its LED), Oxygen sensor, and the low beams were going out ocassionally, said something about AFS being inoperative but after i let it sit for a while and i turn the engine on again it would be fine. There was a lot of rattling coming from the front passenger door, The sun roof, and the dashboard. When I went over hard bumps It felt like the whole cars was gonna tear apart. and the transmission wasnt downshifting smoothly, sometimes I would hear a clunk when I drive for a long time and then slow down. But the car was a fun and fast car to drive, I enjoyed it just that it was becoming a Money pit, so I sold it.

VW Passat B6 2006 was my first car ever which I bought around 2018. It was an 1.9 TDI diesel engine with manual transmission. I won't lie, it was extremely great. I had been driving it for 3 years. I've entered 11 different countries with it. I sold it around december of 2021 and bought an automatic B8 limousine, 2.0 TDI. I kinda miss my B6 just when I got used to it but my current B8 is perhaps a bit more comfy now that I don't have to switch gears. 😅

Hey man, so i used this video in 2018 before i bought my B6 Sedan. I have a few additions to your video, especially to the engine section. First of all, the 2.0FSI and the 2.0TFSI are essentialy the same engine. The TFSI just has a Turbocharger and different piston rings and a stronger oil pump. Also these two engines have Timing Belts between Crankshaft and exhaust Camshaft and a little chain between exhaust Camshaft and Intake Camshaft. I own a 2.0FSI and had to replace my timing chain at 221.000km. The parts were around 450€ (i replaced all vvt and timing components). It was about 4 hours labor. Also, the electronic parking brake is not that bad. I mean yes, the design is very bad and they fail more often than on any other cars, but you can get a calliper with parking brake motor (aftermarket) but new for less than 100€. The 1.4TSI is problematic in all cars between 2007 and 2012. If you have a 1.4TSI with a timing chain (Displacement von 1390) you should replace it asap when it starts making issues. If you have the newer 1.4TSI with a displacement of 1395 it has a timing belt and is good to go. Otherwise a very good buyers guide.

‘07 Passat estate, 2L tdi, 4Motion, 129k miles. Slow and mystery engine oil leak, odd turbo spool noise, failed AC, exhaust fumes in the cabin on high revs low speed. All the shocks are wrecked, springs snapped (replaced) steering tracks right at high speed. Most of the foam or rubber gaskets in the windows have eroded especially on the roof bars, causing a water leak via the rear mirror. Rust in the boot door in numerous places. Failed boot release electrics. One dead fly in the passenger cabin light. Apart from all of this, I love it.

I have a Passat B6 2.0 TDI 2006 6-spd DSG that I bought used with 350 000 km. I have now added about 14 000 km to it. The engine still runs fine and it shifts smoothly. My parking brake does not work even with replaced switch. One of my projector headlights are not working as it's only getting about 9V, probably due to poorly installed extra lights that I removed. A EGR pipe I believe is faulty since the car is a bit louder than it should be. There is a little bit of rust at the door handles, bottom of the doors, on the fenders and on the trunk around the license plate. The rear windshield wiper does not work. With the list being that long you'd assume I experience this car as very troublesome but I actually don't, since I can drive it everyday and 90% of it works just as it should. I will someday fix the rust myself and maybe rear windshield wiper but the rest will be left to a mechanic. I bought the car for 1990€

Mechatronics failure at 100000 kms on my 2.0 TDI DSG. Park break failure at 115,000. Suspension noises started at around 110,000 and still continues.. minor issues like the abs sensor failure happens often.. this leaves a warning light on the dashboard. Left drive shaft boot worn out and splashes grease over to the left front wheel. RCD 500 Head Unit has defective display and it’s not readable. So far this is all I had.. will keep updated 👻

For US buyers, I own the 2.5l b7 passat. My research indicated that starting in 2013, any of the major issues were corrected on this boring but also reliable engine. The only downside is the Direct Injection. So buy a catch can, and plan on cleaning the valves every 60-80k miles. Also, I will never trust the DSG. Way too many issues.

I had a B6 2010 with the 2.0 TDI CR 170HP Engine,i liked it,it had loads of features like Adaptive Cruise Contril,Self Parking,Lane Assist and so on,the engine for me was fine,i suggest you only Get the 2.0 TDI if it is a newer B6,they are much better and have common Rail injection.Tho if its an older B6,just Get the 1.9 TDI in my opinion,the petrols as ive heard are all not as good as diesels in terms of reliability...The newer B6 ditched the 1.9 for a 1.6 tdi,and to be honest i like the 1.9 more,it feels alot faster.In the B7 I wouldn't suggest the 1.6 tdi,its just too slow,if you are going to get a B7,just pay a bit more and get the 2.0,doesn't matter if its the 140ps or 170,they are both good,the AWD system in these cars is amazing too

I was considering buying a B6 in the near future, but all these problems are putting me off, considering most of them are important issues and very expensive to repair. The 2.0 FSI is slow, the 2.0 TFSI/ 2.0 TSI can suffer from very high oil consumption (like the 2.0 TFSI/ TSI from Audi A3-A4 and VW Jetta) because of worn piston rings, the 3.2 (as many of the others) will need a timing chain replacement and the DSG's mechatronic (almost fitted in all 3.2) is prone to failure. Anyone who knows well about these cars can tell me the main differences between the 2.0TFSI and 2.0 TSI engines? And which (engine codes) suffer from high oil consumption? I have seen pictures of the 2.0 that has a silver engine cover that reads TSI and another 2.0 which has a bigger, plastic black cover that says 2.0 FSI TURBO.

Just get a diesel one, i have a 2 litre tdi pd sportline version, from 2007 , and it has been quite a good car until now, low fuel consumption, it's fast enough for me, and it's been really reliable, besides the parking brake button, wich i had to replace. Altought, i have to mention, it only has 150.000 km, and it sat in a garage most of it's life. I'd recommend a low kilometrage one, because generally problems start appearing at around 250.000-300.000 kilometers

Well, at least here in America the oil consumption issue is mostly common on Audi models only (made from 2008 to 2012/2013). And only a very low number of VWs had it.

@@robertflorinmocanu3344 some people dont like the diesel noise and like to rev out their cars more, still a diesel cant have same power as the petrol engine, most ive seen on a b6 diesel is 190hp (b6 2.0tdi 170hp dsg with a tune) and even then yes it might be reliable and better on gas, but the engine doesnt have the sound and the revs(aka its not as fun as the petrol) aswell as its not as fast as the petrol, as it comes with 10less horses and around 100 more kgs id say because its a diesel and it weights more(forged pistons and crankshafts), over here i can find a tuner for a 2.0 petrol that can give me 40 more hp with stage 1 tune(intake and a tune)

@apexseal2811 as far as i know tfsi engines can work without a turbo, and are older than the tsi ones(I beilive the tsi is younger than 2008) the tsi engines cannot work without a turbo cuz they are programmed that way and made that way, or if they do work they will deliver poorly when on the other side if a turbo is gone in a tfsi it can still be made into a fsi

By now you should have advice on this model. How is it holding up if you bought it of cause?
@UndokBeka
@UndokBeka 2 жыл бұрын
@@JT-ts6nr Pretty solid, I must say. Turns out this 2.0 TDI engine (150HP) is one of the most solid engines VW built. If you change the oil and filters regularly (10-15.000kms and not 20.000 as the manufacturer says) it will go a long way. I have mine with a 6spd DSG and its quite good. The car is pretty solid in terms of building, you cant really hear any rattling noise inside. Really comfy inside, the ergo comfort seats are a treat if you can setup properly. I had a Golf MK6 and the shock absorbers in the Passat are way better or the whole gear system. Also the buttons are still pretty solid, my only "problem" is that mine was built in 2015 and it doesn't have mirror link or built in navigation, I would need to change the whole main unit in order to have them and they are pretty costly. If you can grab a later model (2016) they all have navigation and tons of other thing. I have to take the car to the service because one of the parking radar sensor became faulty at the rear. But these things can happen. One advice: always fill the tank with normal petrol. I once used cheap fuel and paid the price (had to change the fuel filter). Overall its a nice car and great for long distances. Cheers, UB

Okaish review. Service and parts prices are waaaay too high in the review. Rear parking brake motor 50€ +20€ for service. Shock absorbers: 50€. I am talking about good aftermarket quality parts, not OE and not trash from Asia. Rust is present because some metal sheets are just lock pressed instead of welded. Over the years even the small water drops can create the rust as it gets in these gaps. Mine is a late 2008 2.0CR 4motion. 330 tkm on the clock. Some minor issues with the turbo pressure sensor, yellowish stains in the wheel arches (rust is coming) and replaced rear parking motor on one side.
