I did it again, it's time to drag home another old Ford truck. This is a 1972 Ford cabover or C-series truck. It's a C600 that used to belong to a John Deere dealership. I bought it cheap but once we got it back to the shop we found a lot of major issues with it. It started up with a tow, but we're a long way from it running and driving on it's own.

My buddy owned this for years it had a roll back bed on it and we used it to haul in scrap cars. Also the frame was bent from hauling lots of heavy stuff on the rollback. Last time I drove it was about 7 years ago and the brakes were junk then. Also it eats starters bad it never had an ignition we use to start it with a screw driver. My buddy put that rigged up push button in. That push button was from a door popper kit. Rear end was unhooked cause it would get stuck one way or another in hi or low. Brings back memories seeing it again.

How bad is the frame forward of the badly damaged spots? Have you considered chopping and shortening it, ala Stubby Bob from Roadkill? Maybe build a little utility bed on the back with space for all the tools you'd need for doing field revivals, then weld on a sturdy tow hitch and use it to pull a trailer for bringing new hoopties home. Or hotrod it into a really fun short wheelbase tonka toy.

that's not enough good to make it all work ... it needs a whole new frame or you can just add frame to the good part and replace the bad part but you couldn't shorten that enough to get all the bad frame gone and still have enough room to put the trans and rear back under it

Love it when your old man makes an appearance. The enthusiasm he shows for the garbage stuff you come up to him from time to time is the thing only dads can do. This truck could make an awesome backup trailer to pickup new projects. Would it be so hard chop and rebuild the frame with a torch and welder? I know it wouldn't be as good as to have it all in one piece, but it can be done I think!

In adding to this - I suggest figuring out how much of the frame is good and then shortening the frame possibly. We used to do this all the time with my Dad's delivery trucks. The biggest thing is the drive shaft will need to be shortened to match and that you really need someone doing it who knows what they are doing. Rest of the truck is so cool - it is worth the frame shortening and the rest of what needs to be done.

I was able to see everything !! Including my trailer ! I loved it !!! When they got rid of it, I was unhappy. However, they gave me a brand new International cab.. W/ air conditioning !! That was a plus~~!

G'day from OZ, my late father was a truck driver in the '60s - '70s, and his truck was petrol and was parked at night outside our house. People down the street would sneak up at night and steal (milk) the petrol from the truck. He then got a new Ford diesel truck, similar to this one, and they only milked it once. Years later we talked to the thieves and they said that the car never ran again.

The tire shops here used to have the big tire cages so they could service split rims safely. Most older pickups had them, my 41 Power Wagon had 16 inch bud split rims and I had a friend into the military trucks that would change them out in his driveway. The ones meant for combat areas had what we called combat rims that had a outer cover over the split with about 12 or more bolts keeping the split rim from ever blowing off no matter what happened to the wheel. Finding a decent 4bbl intake manifold for those engines isn't that easy but they run great with a spread bore carb.

I've always liked the C-600. I drove a flatbed lumber truck in the 70s and a 4 yard cement mixer in the 80s. They both had the 2 speed rear end. The mixer had a really sweet Detroit V8 and it had plenty of get-up-and-go. Lots of fun to drive. I do happen to have an F-600 frame that I've had plans to use it for an overlander. It has a single speed with 8x22.5 six lugs. No motor or trans.

They are not split rims. They are locking ring rims. Actual split rims have a seam down the middle. Locking ring rims are safe, you can change the tires and tubes out yourself fairly easily. Just clean the rings and grooved well as rust can keep them from locking in place easily

I've been doing a little thinking on your frame issue. Basically, that frame is unobtainium at this point. But you might be able to find something similar enough to get you through underneath an old Ford School bus. If that doesn't work out, and you have to Frankenstein the thing together, I think it would be really cool to Bob it out, make a short wheelbase pickup truck hauling a gooseneck car hauler. That would be very cool in my opinion. Also worth noting, the engine in that maybe the heavy duty Fe block. Check for cross bolted main caps, bolts in the side of the block down near the oil pan. If you do have the heavy duty block, even if it's only a 352, that thing is golden. Super heavy duty and worth hanging on to. Worst case scenario, you could put a 428 crank in that, along with some good heads and make killer torque

O-H-I-O Porter greetings 🇺🇸 Happy New Year…2024!😎 I’m so glad that you found & bought this fine old Ford truck! I drove a 65 C800 & really loved it. The cabs are very easy to access & work on. Your truck has the typical rust spots. That ledge behind the seats is only big enough for some speakers, lights & maybe some small bags or toolboxes. Keep in mind that you want things to be tied down up there as well. Anything loose can fly through the window or bounce around. They sure had it rigged up poorly. I hope it’s a 391 engine. That’s what mine had & with a 4 barrel carb. I bet yours was a rollback in the day. Tis a shame that they bent the frame! Some budd wheels would look super sharp on that truck. Mine had Dayton wheels as well. You will have a fine truck to represent your hobby. Good stuff. Blessings my friend.🤩🥰✌️

I picked up a 1985 C700 that was a PG&E truck with the utility bed on it. It only has like 80k miles and I got it started up first try (once battery was fully charged), but it had a bad clutch slave cylinder, so could not drive it, and the right rear wheel has the brake locked up. It has air brakes, but they were not the problem. It has the Detroit Diesel 8.2L 4 stroke. It has modern 22.5 ten lug wheels is why I got it, since I also had a 72 C50 and it had the split rim tubed 20in wheels which are impossible to replace unless you remachine everything, which costs a fortune. You have dayton wheels, not split rims, those are ok. My cab is pretty rusted on the roof, but otherwise its ok. If you are interested in it, I'd sell it and you can swap your cab onto it. In California, commerical diesel trucks older than 2005 can't be registered anymore, but my plan was make it motorhome which is ok. Also, you need to check on the frame material as they used a hardened steel on big trucks that can't be welded on, not sure what year they started that, the older ones might still be mild steel, so you could try to fix your frame.

I'm thinking the large knob is for a hand throttle, since there is a PTO driven hydraulic pump. The Dayton style wheels, can be swapped for the Budd style, but will take replacing the hubs, etc. Those aren't the 'killer' style split rims, but rather split ring type. Which have their own inherent dangers, especially when initially filling tires with air. Had those same style rims on my 1972 Peterbilt 352 COE.

That has a 370 2V, which is the LIMA series engine family. (370 4V and 429 4V, similar to the 385 passenger and light truck 429/460). I believe these engines replaced the FT series (330, 361, 391) in 79. This truck is going to be a 79-84, based upon the engine and the lack of a front emblem. The lightning bolt emblem was used all the way up through 1974. Then no emblem until 85, when they started using the Ford oval. These trucks were produced from 1957-1990.

The black nameless knob in the middle of the dash is probably for your idle. Once you get it running, you can pull it out to increase your idle then turn it to lock it in place. I used to drive trucks and alot of the older trucks had that. (Could also be used as a rudimentary cruise control but I wouldn't recommend it.) The 2 speed rear end isn't a splitter like in semi trucks. You should be either stopped or only going at a walking speed at most when you change rear end ratios. Try that at 10+ mph and you might find that beefy rear end all over the road.

I believe that Freshn'd Air fan has a GE motor. Should also have a pull chain with a little tag on the end. Cool fan.

That takes me back... I drove one of those into the neighbors house when I was a kid. That guy is probably still pissed.

Hi JR 🙂 I’ve seen a couple of rat trucks built using this classic cab and a more modern F-650 chassis converted to accept it. Might be easier/quicker than trying to find a better original chassis - particularly as it also offers the option of air-ride rear axle without further effort. So, cabover you have + ex-Penske (or a hundred other companies) air-ride box truck + sell the box and taillift = cool Ford truck for cheap 🙂🤟🏼

This is too cool. Love the video. I live about 5 blocks from the JD dealer. Too cool to see something that used to run around town here.

I would say the big knob on the dash is the hand throttle that you use to idle up the engine when running the PTO.
