Hi Bill, UTC = Universal Time Coordinated 🙂. Mister Journe is an amazing person, known for his strong character, but recognised as one of the best watchmakers living actually. I was lucky enough to buy a Chronomètre Bleu from Paris boutique with no waiting list, the experience is second to none. Journe watches are above Patek in my opinion. I think the CB is popular for its blue dial, used also in the pièce unique. A great video topic. Thanks for sharing.

Yes DGB, that's right. So used to calling it Zulu Time from my flying days that I forgot its true name...🙄 So you have a 'Bleu!'-the thousand watches in one! Better than Patek Philippe? Well PP cranks out 50,000 per year and FPJ under 900 with a living watchmaker namesake-of course they are. That's why I differentiate between 'High Horology' and 'Exceptional Horology'- don't get me wrong PP has wonderful watches; FPJ as magnificent ones! Cheers, Bill

Hi Bill! So glad to see this piece on FP Journe and look forward to Sunday’s installment. It’s less than 5 years since I became engrossed in the world of watches and 3 since I found FP’s products. The man is truly amazing on many different levels combining a unique sense of style with outstanding engineering abilities makes him a modern day Rembrandt. When I first found the Resonance series, IU loved the concept but had no love for the dial. Sure the first series were elegant and beautiful, but I could not see the sense of putting 2 12 hour displays on there. The answer was the “digital” display that would show 24 hours. Never liked the look for that edition, but made more sense. I always said if he ever comes out with an analog 12 and 24 hour display, I would pony up the funds. Well, he did and I did! Couldn’t be happier with my new Resonance, but it is challenging to wind! Happy New Year! Rich
@watchartsci4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rich! Do you remove the 12 o'clock band when you wind and set your Resonance? The manager of the FPJ Boutique in NYC suggested I do so and for the last few years I've had my R (the first versions of the Chronomètre à Résonance were designated simply as 'R') I've always done that lest I bend the stem or crown. When I had it serviced and overhauled in 2017, the stem had to be replaced, and I think that the prior owner had bent it in the winding. It sounds like you got the 2019 version-a truly unique and rare one since FPJ said he was only going to have that version for one year. Mine, from 2002 keeps great synch and even after the charge is low, the second hands, minutes and hours are in perfect resonance. A great watch to own! I wonder what FPJ has in mind for his next Chronomètre à Résonance! Happy New Year and Decade, Bill
@richarddavis75484 жыл бұрын
Hey Bill Yes I always remove the strap to wind the Resonance. Even so after a week of wear my fingers are killing me! It’s like winding a small razor! Given that I love the watch and especially appreciate the movement. It’s much different than the Armin Strom resonance which has an actual physical connection to get it to resonate. Truly a remarkable accomplishment!

How’s this for coincidence Bill. Just last week I pulled the trigger on an FPJ CS in platinum. Bought it in “unworn “ condition and should have it next week. Best wishes for a healthy and happy 2020!

Congratulations Jeffrey! As soon as I got mine, I got an extra FPJ band-one with a rubberized back so that I can wear it all the time and keep the original in prime shape for special occasions. Later, the manager of the NYC boutique, William who also has a CS in platinum, was wearing his with a 'Cognac' strap-beautiful strap with platinum. So I got one too, and it's like having an extra CS in my collection-the strap transforms the look of the watch. What a great way to kick off 2020! Kindest regards, Bill

WatchArtSci Thanks Bill. My wife and I will be in Hong Kong in a few weeks and I’ll be sure to visit the FPJ Boutique during our stay. I imagine the platinum CS should shine in cognac and/or blue. Thanks again for advice. Regards, Jeff.

I do respect FPJ himself a lot and I also totally agree he is the A.L. Breguet of our era. More than one time I've asked myself "Do I value and focus on hand-finishing too much?". Sure hand-finishing is one of the key difference between Haute Horlogerie and mass-produced good watches, but the innovations of mechanisms and functions shouldn't be less important at all. The Chronometre Optimum is also my favorite FPJ and at the top place of my grail list. The combination of constant power feed and friction-free escapement is theoretically perfect for chronometry. But one thing has bugged me a lot: why FPJ doesn't make a hacking system if chronometry is his major interest? By the way, as I know the waiting list of the Chronometre Bleu has been discarded by FPJ.
@watchartsci4 жыл бұрын
Leya, he does't include hacking for the same reason Patek Philippe doesn't; slamming the breaks on the balance wheel cannot be a good thing. My Lang & Heyne has hacking and I do worry about the stop-second mechanism. (I think all German watches have hacking-how could they not?) Cheers, Bill
@leyay75404 жыл бұрын
@@watchartsci I understand your concern, but I also believe there's a distinct contradiction between chronometry and non-hacking movement. Several Patek's new movements also have added hacking function. I think FPJ should find a new way to hack the movement, not just ignores this issue.

Hi Bill, Chronometre Opttimum is also my favourite FPJ, but I wish he did it in 38mm. Cheers, James

Hey James, I know what you mean, but I've learned to enjoy sizes ranging from my 33mm Calatrava to 42mm H. Moser- my sweet spot is from 38mm to 41mm, but I'm flexible. I'd take a FPJ Optimum the size of a frisbee! Cheers Bill
@southnc634 жыл бұрын
Great video, Bill. The Optimum also has a double-direct impulse engine, similar - but different - to Breguet's original Natural Escapement. In addition, the Remontiore will cut-out with less then 20 hours of power or so. Also, it has a regular second on front and a dead-beat second on the case back, whilst the Tourbillon Souvrain has dead-beat only on the front.
@watchartsci4 жыл бұрын
Hey SouthNC thanks for that additional information about the Optimum. I discovered the Grönfeld Remontoir 1941, and while less expensive than the Optimum; still too high for my budget! I'll see if I can talk some watchmaker into making a remontoir we all can afford! Cheers, Bill
@leyay75404 жыл бұрын
@@watchartsci As I know the Gronefeld is already the most affordable watch with remontoire which ever appeared in the market. I'm also curious why it always costs a lot since the mechanism isn't that complicated.
@watchartsci4 жыл бұрын
Leya, it's an easy concept to understand but very difficult to create. In a conversation with Stephen Forsey, I asked about why more watchmakers didn't use remontoir d'egalite and that was what he said. Simple in concept is not always simple in execution. E=MC2 is an example. Take care, Bill
@leyay75404 жыл бұрын
@@watchartsci Honestly I doubt that's the whole story... On the contrary to the modern mainspring and escapement system, how much advantage will a remontoire have? For me it's more like a tourbillon in wristwatch: interesting to view but with minimal function.
@watchartsci4 жыл бұрын
Leya, the same can be said for the tourbillon-but they're a dime a dozen. Accuracy in fine mechanical watches is really a side-show given that we can have near-perfect accuracy with a cheap quartz. The remontoir d'egalité is a brilliant concept and implementation, and until I find other wise, I'm going with Stephen Forsey's explanation. What I'd like you to do is to do some digging on your own to see what you can find out about remontoir d'egalité ... and figure out how we can get an affordable one! Do some real research and let me know what you find. Cheers, Bill

Hi Bill, again another great video. I recently had the chance to see a Vertical tourbillon up close which was for sale at a AD ( I was surprised one was available) .Although i was impressed with the watch itself i was less than impressed with the tan leather strap and the quality of the pin buckle . I would also have preferred on a watch at this price level a deployment clasp even though its on a leather strap, what is your view ?. Apart from the brass movement Tourbillon Souverains,it seems that F.P.Journe high end watches like the gold movement Tourbillons lose considerable value , with prices of this model in the low $90k and some in the $70s compared to what $160k rrp ? As a watch enthusiast I am not looking to buy watches as investment ,however it is nice to know that your purchase doesnt lose too much value while you enjoy it.What is your view on these watches for the future? . I was also pleased with the friendly reception at F.P.Journe especially when compared to the cold unfriendly service at the Rolex AD which is why i am moving away from Rolex and looking for something different . Happy new year and all the best for 2020

Hey Rob, I know what you mean about the strap. Most of the gator straps have been replaced by leather of different origins-hides from the non-endangered list. Moser started using Kudu hide ... so any gator or croc bands are going away as the primary band-material. FPJ has a lot of class, and every time I get to NYC, I try to drop by their boutique.
