The snare bed you described is typical for Ludwig. Some of the widest snare beds in the industry. Some say that's part of the "secret" to the great Ludwig snare drum sound,. It also allows you to install 42 strand snares with no issues whatsoever. The Combo kits were available in the late 1970's and early 1980's.

Dave! Your a brave man! At first I thought it was a Ludwig Standard. And YES! Plastic lugs terrify me also. Yamaha experimented with the Stage Custom Nouveau series which were a composite that stripped and crack terribly. I also recall some Ludwig’s being a soft white plastic which I almost had a fit over! Lost faith in Ludwig for 30 years. This one doesn’t sound half bad. Great video and appreciate all of the fun.

CS dot tuned low sounds ok. Buddy Rich played a Fibes synthetic snare.. crazy crisp & responsive. This Ludwig may not be quite the same quality but a coated ambassador & tuned higher could make for an exceptional tone with crack & minimal ringing. Best to fit some higher quality lugs to crank it up though.

Have heard b4 that the material of the drum shell doesn’t matter so much as literally anything else about the drum - bearing edges, hoops, tuning stability, consistency in the shape of the shell and the skin are all factors that usually determine the distinct sound of different drums than different woods or metals

I’ve got nothing against Ludwig or old American drums in general (I own a ‘61 Slingerland myself), but the plastic lugs are a perfect example of the types of weird decisions American companies made with their hardware in the ‘70s and early ‘80s that ended up costing them dearly when Tama, Yamaha, and Pearl showed up with good prices AND good quality. From Ludwig’s ridiculous P-81 snare strainer and plastic-handled wingnuts on their Modular hardware, to Slingerland’s crappy Magnum hardware, to Gretsch’s lousy straight bass spurs and clunky tom mounts, to Ludwig’s refusal to design a fast and quiet chain-and-sprocket bass drum pedal to replace the Speed King, the writing was on the wall for significant market loss once the Japanese shell manufacturing caught up. It’s fortunate that Slingerland, Camco and Rogers were the only major casualties, because that list could have easily included Ludwig.
