You are not a dork. You are very talented and musically educated. It takes skill to sing Bach cantatas. As for crying, I teared up too when I saw this wonderful peace move for the first time (especially the Ciaccona!). You have every right to cry when such a treasure like this cantata is inherited for all the world. You are a Bach lover like me and thousands (maybe millions!) of others.

Absolute masterpiece, apparently composed when Bach was in his early 20s, when he visited Buxtehude. Vox Luminis recently made an absolute gem of a recording of it, paired with Actus Tragicus.

You're seeing Bach wrestling with the fact that woodwinds were tuned to chamber pitch, about half a note lower than today, while the strings, choir, and organ are tuned to choir pitch which as you can see is a minor third higher than chamber pitch. Bach transposes the bassoon part to match. Later, in Leipzig, where the organ was well tempered rather the mean tone tempered, he simply transposed the organ and wrote everything else in chamber pitch.

Oh my goodness. I'm so happy after singing along with this, I'm crying. Wonderful memories of singing in my high school and college days. Yes, I know: I'm a dork. But I'm a happy dork, so thank you for posting this! ^_^

It’s not what I would have thought a difficult bass line at 3’40”... too many accidentals? Enough to draw swords for some (of course there was history between them). I happen to know a ridiculously argumentative bassoonist, I’m like, “what’s your problem?”.

That is a great observation. I saw the facsimile of the original "copied" score and came to the conclusion that the bassoon is using a "movable clef". In BWV 106, the recorders have movable treble clefs as well. I won't venture to guess but I sure hope Christoph Wolff sees this to satisfy our curiosity.

I read psalm 25 on the bible and I thought it was so beautiful that I looked it up on the internet to know more about it. What a wonderful surprise when I found Bach had used some of its verses for the Cantata. Beautiful.

Bach's early cantatas are often overlooked but are so much more emotionally deep than the later ones, at least to my ears. This work is more similar to the cantatas of Buxtehude and Pachelbel than later Bach, which also have that same emotional deepness. I highly recommend them to everyone I know who wants to try and understand Bach.

I've heard many of Bach's cantatas, and I have yet to hear one with as much emotional depth as this one. It's not as blatantly sad as bwv 131, yet it impacts me just as much. Especially "meine augen sehen stets zu dem herrn".

Every Baroque playlist should contain J.S. Bach. This work contains both homophonic and polyphonic textures spread throughout. The soprano solo in the 3rd movement is actually a duet with the violin. The tempo changes are found both inside of movements and in-between movements. All of the movements end with a strong cadence.

Thanks to G+, I can't reply below. It's both the Hanover Boy's Choir singing soprano and alto, and the Collegium Vocale singing alto (countertenor), tenor and bass in the choruses. It seems that the Hanover choir didn't have a strong men's section when they started recording these cantatas with Leonhardt, although recent videos show they do now.

Supongo que esa será la razón porque en realidad el Fagot está doblando el Bajo Contínuo. Preciosas las series de 7ª del final del Chor. Saludos desde España. I guess that is the reason, the bassoon is actually doubling the continuo. Beautiful 7th series at the end of Chor. Greetings from Spain.

Am I the only one who thinks that this cantata doesn't really sound like Bach wrote it? I mean there are some greate fugal and contrapunctal parts in there but overall it doesn't really sound like Bach to be honest... the harmony is fairly simple and the individual parts are not as sophisticated as in most other cantatas...
@johnkiunke5617
@johnkiunke5617 6 жыл бұрын
This is his earliest known cantata, so it is naturally more simple than the later ones as he learned more and more as his life went on. He was only 21 when he wrote it. Even so, it is remarkably complex (especially the first chorus) even if it falls short of his later cantatas.
