Having worked as the music director for a Protestant sect, I suspect Bach knew in advance what the theme of a particular Sunday would be. I suspect that the impression that he wrote the cantata on Monday and Tuesday, copied all the parts on Wednesday, and perhaps had Thursday, Friday, and Saturday to rehearse the music for Sunday isn't realistic at all. Copying music by hand is very time-consuming in and of itself. If the churches where Bach worked are anything like the churches where I worked a few hundred years later, the cantatas were performed weeks after he wrote them--just so there would be time to copy and rehearse the music. Given the difficulty of the music, those weeks worth of rehearsals would have been much needed!

@@sueneimoyer5043 basically correct. The Lutheran Church determines readings on a standardized cyclical calendar, meaning that the Bible readings for any given service are determined years in advance; similar to how how you can look ahead in a calendar and know that July 31st, 2029 will be a Tuesday. (Yes, I did check, lol.) This means that Bach knew well in advance what text/theme was scheduled for a given service, and compose accordingly.

i believe this is my favorite of Bach's cantatas. the duet, "Den Tod..." is so emotionally evocative, and the last "Alleluia" in that movement brings forth such intense sweet sadness. Ah, Papa Bach... you are the master!

The beauty of this cantata transcends words. Once again a powerful and deep combination of words and music. Thank you, Gerubach for your great work in presenting this piece in such a convenient (for people like me) way! Really appreciated.

RodrigoCL, Surely not, the Stiftung recording and the Gardiner one are 10x better easily. The baroque articulation here (especially in the strings) is appalling, the soloists are hit and miss, and the choir are too dreary and unclear. Treat yourself to a proper interpretation, these poor musicians were still working out HP, we've come a long way since!

Thanks for the sugestion. I listened to them and they sure are much better. Still, this is the one that touchs the heart. Can't explain why, though. Maybe because of its pacing, I guess. I don't know. Sorry.

Harnoncourt and Leonhardt are consistently the most sincere and authentic-sounding performances. Sincere because they don't "act" out love and devotion, they sing it. Authentic because the human and technological imperfections make it humbling to hear them put their whole hearts into it, which is the entire point of the music. I'm transported to a church or festival, whereas with Gardiner I'm at home listening to "the best composer on modern headphones with HIP." And those guys who were just "working it out" made the greatest strides towards HP and laid the foundation for everyone who came after. I give Gardiner and Suzuki and the like second fiddle.

This appears to have the same trouble as far as sound is concerned which I have with Sibelius and Kontaktplayer2. It all sounds like an amplifier suffering from distortion. I makes me often loath what I have written especially for strings because other instruments may be tolerated._

Why is this Video Key up than Original Sound track?
@jyschng9 жыл бұрын
I know this is a very late comment, but this is in the same key that my scores are in. I think the reason it looks higher is that the score in the video are in the appropriate clefs: soprano alto tenor and bass/ rather than in treble and bass like modern scores. At the very least, Tenor clef looks like treble clef but transposed up by a tone.

+CM L Those are by and large the keys notated in the manuscript of 1722. If you have anything more original than that, it would be great to know.
@wschmrdr3 жыл бұрын
The pitch and score definitely match. However, there is extensive use of the "C clef", which you may see even on modern Viola scores. The idea is that the "pointing" part of the bracket is middle C. The Soprano vocal part uses soprano clef (you don't see it often aside from conductor's scores), with the middle C being on the lowest of the five lines. Alto clef (commonly used for viola) has middle C on the middle of the 5 lines, and tenor clef (can be used in the modern day for cello and trombone parts with higher pitches) with middle C on the 4th line up. You'll notice the key signatures are also adjusted accordingly.

Too bad the Vienna Choirboy soloist isn't identified -- typical for when this was recorded over 40 years ago. If the Vienna boy soloists hadn't been such beautiful singers when the series started it would have gone nowhere quickly.

Yeah, his singing is so incredible. The annunciation, even. . . really amazing.
@AML20004 жыл бұрын
@@ifyouloveChristyouwillobeyhim In the seven years since I posted this, "insiders" with the choir have identified the boy as Paul Pfeiffer, who sang most of the soprano solos in the first almost 30 cantatas. I can't vouch for that myself, but no-one has contradicted that either. He went on to play horn with the Vienna Philharmonic.
