Another commenter said that the Canzona in D minor is a faithful picture of the world in 2020. But also in 2021, I would say. I hope the picture in 2022 won't be "Aus tiefer Not schrei' ich zu dir"...

@@luisfernandotapia451 & @the Superintendent : Here in the UK the copyright on an audio recording of music lasts until 70 years after the performer's death. The organist, Michel Chapuis (listed in the end credits), died in 2017. So the copyright on the specific recording does not expire here until 2087. I assume that the recording contract granted royalties that accrue to the Recording Company, Publisher, and trustees of the estate of the deceased organist.

I'm playing this piece right now, so I'm glad you uploaded it! The tempo is way too fast imo, especially in the second part where you can barely hear the voices. Also, too little ornamentation... not my favourite recording. I recommend Koopman and Richter

Is a Canzona a rare type of piece I've never heard of?
@TamsinJones3 жыл бұрын
Bach didn't want you to think he had composed yet another fugue...but there's always room for another fugue by JSB.
@TheTrueAltoClef3 жыл бұрын
@@TamsinJones imagine Bach was so sick of writing fugues, but when his pen touches the paper, and suddenly there's another fugue on the paper with 2 hours or so having passed, that in anger he titles it Canzona in D Minor
@TamsinJones3 жыл бұрын
@@TheTrueAltoClef Joking aside, I suspect the canzona refers to choral-like quality of the vocal writing. I can easily imagine singing this fugal work; the parts show a smoother contour than many of Bach's keyboard fugues.
@TheTrueAltoClef3 жыл бұрын
@@TamsinJones yeah that's also what I noticed
@ernstbechert22883 жыл бұрын
I think it is a reference to Frescobaldi's Canzoni which Bach knew and liked very much. The change to 3/2 in part B is one more hint. Frescobaldi used to put a subject in double and triple meter in many of his contrapuntal keyboard works. - Oh, I just noticed that Frank Wallinder also mentioned Frescobaldi as source of inspiration.

Could someone explain the difference between a canzona and a fugue, please? Also is this an early work by Bach? It sounds unusual to me.
@yaroslavkaiuk3803 жыл бұрын
Canzona is a name of this piece and has translation from italian "song", but the structure of this piece is two-part fugue. Bach probably wrote this when he was influenced by Frescobaldi's canzonas, and yes, he was very young then (~20 years).
@lalalalelele11893 жыл бұрын
@@yaroslavkaiuk380 I noticed many canzonas by other composers like Giovanni Gabrieli or Samuel Scheidt have a fugue- like structure so I thought maybe a canzona is something like a predecessor of a fugue
@outernothingness1177 Жыл бұрын
No. Simply no. Played way too fast. This is no way near what this piece should sound like.
