Bach was the king of recycling music lol, especially chorale harmonizations and cantata parts. Part of why his output is so massive.

@@KennyCnotG I'd say Handel was the King of that.

@@pseunition6038 yeah he's a contender for that lol but it was definitely much more common to unashamedly rework pieces back then, compared to more modern times like 20th century to now it feels like. Unless your Eric Whitacre ;)

The well-tempered tuning of the organ plus the tremulant and the softer registration gives this piece so much more character.
@PointyTailofSatan Жыл бұрын
BTW, if you are wondering why it's nicknamed the "fiddle", it's because the fugue is from Bach's Sonata for Violin BWV 1001.

@Andrew Aiello maybe, but the fugue doesn’t really sound like it was composed for organ. The arpeggios in the top voice are very typical of violin compositions, the piece in general seems to not take advantage of the organ’s power, which is unusual for Bach’s organ fugues, not to mention the pedals are noticeably sparse, which is again unusual for Bach, who was known for complex and clever pedal work, but this would make sense if it were arranged from violin. In general, though, violin pieces, particularly fugues, need to be composed with the capabilities of the violin in mind. There are chords and intervals that can’t be performed, or if so only with extreme difficulty, on a violin that would be simple on a keyboard. Violin pieces are more frequently transcribed for other instruments than the other way around.

If this instead of BWV 533 in E minor COULD be the sample of the Organ segment in R1 Place in the world fades away, then I still can’t find the exact part that was used. But it’s possible Leyland Kirby added multiple layers in it or scrambled with it such as the earlier Post-Awareness tracks.

This fugue is the fuguein G/ minor from te G minor sonata No. 1 from te Six sonatas and partitas for violin solo, only transposed to D minor. It is especially interesting for me, because I am a violinist. Therefore is the fugue's name, probably, "The fiddle"l, because it is reworked from a violin piece. Bach was also a great violinist and ad a great and deep understanding of the instrument of the violin.

Is that fugue from his violin sonata, or is the fugue in the violin sonata from this? Also, thanks for uploading!

Obviously the former. As string instruments are ill-suited to the complex polyphony of a fugue, such compositions are tailor-made for the violin.

@Gerubach: why did you pair the prelude played by Peter Hurford with the fugue from Michel Chapuis? I think the original recording of Michel Chapuis is second to none, listen to: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/brJpm8mlnpyzko0.html Especially the notes enegales (pointed rhythm) used here are very beautiful. The organ is the Arp Schnitger from the Saint Michael Church in Zwolle, the Netherlands.The leaflet does not state the individual stops used for these interludes. There is also a master class from Michel Chapuis on KZfaq where he analyses BWV539...
@keescanalfp51433 жыл бұрын
the rather special registration could include a stopped flute 8’ and a soft double octave 2’, perhaps even triple octave 1’, in that case without the 2’.
