This vehicle is set to be a completely different take on the traditional pickup truck. I think it will succeed as long as the distributor doesn't interfere with the pricing. Based on the BYD Hybrid Off-Road Platform DMO, the remarkable thing about this technology is that it provides substantial power while minimising fuel consumption. Take the Bao 5, for example, which has about 677 horsepower, yet its fuel consumption is only around 7-8L/100km-cheaper than most medium or large SUVs. On a day-to-day basis, the 100-150km electric range allows you to travel freely in most areas. Notably, you can use this vehicle to power electric tools, thanks to its installed battery. There’s currently no other car like this on the market.

What's really cool about this is that if you're working and Mining you can use the truck in the mines in pure electric mode and then when you get out you can switch over to hybrid mode

Surface mining yes. Underground mining not yet. Having the battery in the under carriage of truck is too dangerous currently for underground mining. We break vehicles on the daily in the rough underground environment and piercing the battery case would cause a bad fire that can’t be but out easily. We have a bunch of ford lightning’s at my mining company but they aren’t allowed to go underground due to risks of battery damage.

@@timorum there is still a fire risk with LFP. Underground is a wet enviornment with a lot of rocks that damage the undercarriage of the trucks. Trust me if they were ready we would have them underground already. Would save immense amounts of money on electricity for not having to use as much ventilation. Work for one of the largest mining companies in the world. We have some drills that are fully electric right now.

There are dedicated Brazilian BEV mining trucks designed for acidic / corrosive conditions. Able to charge underground in existing infrastructure. Way better alternative, outlast Landcruiser 3x.

This is based on the same platform as the Fang Cheng Bao 5. That vehicle starts at $39k US in China (a little less than a dual motor Model Y in China), but that car is positioned as a luxury SUV, targeting Land Rovers and Land Cruisers, with 670hp (vs 480?) and a lot more content. Think Escalade vs. Silverado. For a base model truck, a price below $30k in China is possible, if a bit aggressive. A higher performance, optioned up version would also be possible, but would be more expensive.

I’m normally not a fan of plug in hybrids vs full EV’s, but 100km is good enough for everyday driving and for truck owners who need to haul, I understand the range anxiety that would come with towing.

Fast changing hardly an advantage - get extra 50 miles on trip sections, back to petrol / diesel. 1.5 lt ICE probably overkill, but great for towing long distance. Only save 15-20% fuel on long trips, it’s all about urban short trips, full electric.

I live in Turkey with weak Charging cluster.. Got a 10kw solar system offgrid.. So this BYD Pickup is absolut perfect..and my daily or better weekly drives are less then 20km.. Normally I would never buy a Plugin Hybrid, but to drive from here to Berlin, which I do twice a year, its ideal. Especially Bulgaria, Serbia etc. Have no good charging system. Also ride Enduro Motorbike all over turkey a lot, and there you are often happy to find a gas Station, in these remote areas charging will probably possible by 2030 or later!! I just dont understand Ford or Toyota or VW why the did not launch this car 5 years ago!!! Its a sad and dumm story with the Traditional car makers..

This could be a successful given the unique tech compare with other brands. You can run your power tools in anywhere without power, 1000kms distance is plenty and can fill up the tank anywhere. Around town just use battery and change when back home. Build quality should be good if they are trying to win customers.

DMO, dual mode operation, the motor can be in serial or parallel with the electric motors. When power is needed, it goes to drive directly. On highways, it operates as range extender

But we work in the Great Sandy Desert and along the Gibb River Road, so I can't help wondering: will we be able to fit a bull bar, driving lights, trayback for the aluminium canopy, higher clearance for offroad, and please . . . V2H? I guess we will just have to wait, wait. wait, wait to find out if we can do what so many of us are busting to do: customise a truly Outback ute to replace the existing Hilux.

The vehicle sounds appealing in some ways. However, the one big concern I have about buying a BYD is the availability of replacement parts for repairs and maintenance. (Based upon what I've read about the UK and Europe having those issues. Allegedly, insurance companies are writing off damaged vehicles simply because they cannot obtain the parts for repairs. And the result is skyrocketing insurance costs.)

Personal taste is that the Ranger... and even the Ford Maverick is too big for my needs and wants (as is true with many people I know.) What we want is something truly smaller, with a rooftop height no more than 60" (1562mm) and no longer than 196" (4978mm).

I’d be interested to hear you report more on other aspects of the EV ownership ecosystem, especially service, support, repairs availability, etc, in target markets. Understanding the F&B of the vehicles is interesting, but as we all know, there’s a lot more to ownership than just the vehicle.

In Australia, we have 100% built Utes/pickups from chinese government owned SAIC corp. The company name is LDV. They are relatively cheap compared to all the Toyota equivalents, and you can buy them just about anywhere. The Toyota dealerships must be crapping themselves.

Mining in Australia is crying out for lower cost options than expensive Landcruiser/Hilux conversions or RHD conversions of the F150 Lightning. Not so much interested in the Petrol Plug In hybrid version because most Mine sites only have Diesel, but the pure BEV version will be the gamechanger we’ve been waiting for. If there are options with ~300km and ~600km genuine off road ranges they’ll clean up.

Just because the figures are good doesn’t mean it’s a better vehicle. I’m open to these providing the drive quality is there. If it drives like a Hilux then i don’t think it’s going to be a success. It’s going to have to have Amarok levels of refinement to really take market share off the ranger and Hilux. I think it’s people like myself who are open to non established brands (in Australia at least) and it needs to have some serious refinement.

All traditional ICE MANUFACTURERS better smartened up and embrace EV and ask for Tesla help otherwise they won’t be around. It’s not Tesla to worry about they are the leader in 1st place. It’s Asian brands coming for 2nd and 3rd spots Ford &GM should focus on.

It is the market that will either accept or reject the hybrid model. Everyone has a choice. So why are detractors of this BYD hybrid so up in arms against this option? Brands represents a sense of nostology and pickup buyers are conservative they buy a truck for the 10% of the time they need a truck, it must 100% truck in its functionality even though its only used in that capacity 10% of the time. Do not think you can skip on towing, cargo or toughness becouse trucks are mostly used as big cars.. Pickups are not cars and pickup- buyers the world over pay a premium for that distinction.. Take a lead from Tesla Cyber truck and its retro toughness make the body panels, frame bed and everything robust and extra tuff way over industry standard don't go for sleekness, modernity or efficiency go for rugged durability in design. Look and 70's era pickups for inspirations these are still fashionable and revered today becouse of their simplicity, reliability and toughness.

it depends on the remaining electricity and the driving conditions to switch "direct drive" or "charge battery" automatically or manually. it's called DMO technology. I'll give u the translation of BYD's DMO below. BYD DMO is a professional level off-road hybrid platform, officially known as Dual Mode Off Road, or Super Hybrid Off Road in Chinese. DMO is an innovation of BYD in plug-in hybrid technology, specifically developed for off-road vehicles. This platform is mainly driven by electricity, combining high-efficiency electric systems and traditional internal combustion engine technology, and can support two modes: direct drive or power generation. Toyota has a history of reliability both on road and off road plus an extensive dealership network able to provide service and spare parts nationwide.. Not so for BYD, which looks to be offering sexy EVs for urban cowboys. No wonder Sam wants one.

Independent rear suspension is a mistake for load carrying vehicles like utes. Hopefully they have some sort of weight adjustment system built into the rear suspension otherwise the tyres can chew out quickly.

If the incumbents continue to become ever pricier, and BYD, say, comes in at a more moderate price with a creditable product, hypothetically, they might wedge their way in like the Korean makes did. Politics are probably a bigger factor.

It is body on frame. The battery is integrated into the ladder frame. Not a unibody like a Cybertruck or Honda Ridgeline.

If any of the Chinese brands build a support network with available parts and have built trust and reputation for reliability of at least another 5-10 yrs I may consider buying. At the moment, it’s still “sucks to be you” after sales service, which they get away with in China where the “rule of law” is very flimsy.

you need to build up your reputation and reliability before businesses are willing to invest there. so, if you are only reputable and reliable towards western businesses, then only western businesses will invest there.

I would have been happy to see the BYD Ute 90mm shorter/ smaller than the Ford Ranger. The hybrid version would be better suited to have a larger battery, something maybe closer to 200km in electric range. Making it longer /larger than Ford Ranger makes it just a little less attractive for the average driver unfortunately. Larger utes may better suit the tradies market but will they be buying BYD hybrid or sticking with Ford or Toyota.

I’ve got friends who are still scared to go full BEV, but an affordable pickup truck that can do 100km range on Battery for daily use to save them money and a Petrol range extender for when they do need to tow a caravan 1200km in a day would be very appealing.

According to Ford, GM, Stellantis and Toyota, people want PHEV trucks more than EV trucks. In LATAM, MEA and APAC, for the countries where charging infrastructure is not developed, a PHEV makes more sense for many users.

Specs do not sound very good for such a big car. 358 HP combined has little value, as combined power use will be very limited with an up to 60 mile range only. 1,5 L turbo engine also sounds small for this vehicle size, which is supposed to be a work horse. I highly doubt this vehicle can do 1000 kms on a single tank, let alone with electric combined. And then there is that extra 30 Kwh weight it carries. Offload capabilities we will have to see if it has enough umf with combined power in sync. For comfort, I can understand the specs. I still doubt 1,5 L is powerful enough for tough offroading even with the turbo.

I hate BEV's why drag all that extra expense and weight around for 60 miles, every repair is double the costs because the the gas engine is in the way of the electric components and vice a versa. Mileage for both drive trains is reduce do the extra weight and complexity. I have enough complexities in my life !!!

I don't think many guys would buy a BYD 'truck' Chinese 4wd are not known for strength and there will be other EV Options like RAM,Chev. Only way would be a super cheap price. I'd never buy Chinese 'truck' if same price. BYD are the Aliexpress of cars.

You will never buy it and you think its the "Aliexpress" of cars, but todays young and future generations will grow up with the knowledge that Chinese EV`s as with all new energy technology is better than the western or Japanese equivalent. Sure some of them are going to be indoctrinated western supremacists, but generally people will go for the better product/best value for money.

@liuyangyang hmm, yang sir, cars have more to them than the battery maker. Duracell or Energizer make batteries, but we don't drive them. Actually, I'm wrong. My sons 4wd monster truck is powered by Duracell, and also China built. Fun aside, I simply cannot see the developed Western world labelling BYD or Neo or any of the other 90+ Chinese EV makers as motoring prestige. Yes I know they are huge in China, and numbers are global in size, but not global in location. huge given that Asian market, but that's very localised. Now Chinese car CEOs are getting schooled on western pushback and expectstions. It's taken Mercedes, and other brands over 100 years of motoring, racing, marketing and proven quality to aspire to.The Chinese market is so different to USA and Europe, James Bond won't step out of a BYD, not for many decades. You don't step out of a BYD and say, wow, I've made it. You step out and wonder if the door steel will still be straight next time you shut the door. Have you seen byd 4wd reviews? Twisted metal, laughable and apauling excuse for 4wd. Come on, look at the EU push back, US same. EU ports BYD parking lots with teturn to sender stickers. BYD will struggle to establish market share especially when marquee brands get the same or better batteries and electric motors, which they will pilfer, steal or buy from BYD, and it will happen quickly. Asians countries are not exactly reveared as driving nations are they. Given there is NO support network outside of Asia, the only way they BYD will gain western market share, undercut the absolute crap out of their competition. That's not prestige, but that is the proven Chinese way. Sell cheap.

Sorry - I really do not understand the concept of PHEV for a commercial or work use. Truck is for commercial use mostly but those who bought PHEV for work couldnt be bother charging. There is a study in EU with PHEV is 3 time polluting. Might be better do a full gas hybrid rather than PHEV. At the end its either Hybrid or BEV.......there is no room for PHEV.

Japanese PHEV is a JOKE. The chinses version of this ute, can do 7L per 100k. Very cheap to run.

@@liuyangyang Japanese PHEVs - joke 100% agree. But my Outlander PHEV as well as my 2019 non-PHEV Hilux 2.8 D were both doing 7l/100km. And yes, this UTE is def better than either, but I'm happy to bet that it will be garbage compared to it's own fully EV version. PHEV is basically unnecessary amount of dino-juice burning dino-tech onboard. No-brainer to have all that ICE space filled with batteries and having the simplest of motion system in place rather than the most complex one. Also, in the UK the Outlander PHEV was ok, but in Spain whenever temperature outside reached over 26C, the thing was suffering big time with all sort of fans running at full at all time. And to no surprise, having the 2L petrol engine just ahead of the battery pack... PHEV is seriously dumb idea IMHO.
