If BYD atto 3 can meet safety standards in Australia, New Zealand, Europe & Thailand, but cannot meet the safety standard in US, there is something wrong with US regulators, nothing wrong about BYD atto 3.

PHEV technology is a hidden gem. I've been driving Chevy Volts for ten years. GM stopped making those, but the beauty is the 50 mile electric range. I've yet to see any new PHEVs that have that much.

EPA is irrelevant for this truck as its not going to be sold in US. I dont think US would allow it to be imported or tax it so much that its irrelevant.

BYD already has a factory in California making buses. Maybe they can expand it to make trucks. And then move to Texas because it costs so much to do business in California.

Starting price for $53K equivalent for a midsize is honestly a lot higher than I expected. I expected something in the $35K or at most mid $40K range (starting price of a Tacoma hybrid). Remember in Mexico a base Hilux starts at $20K equivalent so BYD is twice as much Yet its towing and payload a lot less, no solid axle means it is never gonna be as off-road capable. It uses e-CVT rather than traditional torque converter automatic. Its 30kwh or so battery is stored not in the interior like the Wrangler 4XE or TNGA-F product but outside underneath the cab. So repairing and replacing on that battery will take longer and cost more money. Some of the biggest problem of the BYD DMO platform. This is not the game change that some people hyped up to be

DMO is more than adding an electric motor between gas engine and wheels. It even doesn't have a physical drive shaft.

I was gonna get a BYD Atto 3 here in Australia for 45K AUD (sale price, normally 52K). But I learnt that they sell the same vehicle, newer model Atto 3 (Yuan Plus in China) for 26K AUD. The markup is astronomical. You don't get what you pay for with these cheap Chinese vehicles. That said, it will be interesting to see their price for the Shark at the end of the year in Aus.

I like it, I wish it was a full electric drive train of the generator like the RAM charger. You get all the reliability benefits of electric that way.

So all of a sudden China is able to produce high quality cars and trucks? I have serious doubts. Cheap, yeah probably, but not at the same level as manufacturers who have been doing this for many decades and selling globally. BYD started selling in Europe in the 2020s. This is a DMO platform but it is totally different that fangchengbao 5. No 云辇 system, no 700 hp powertrain, no low gear mode, no differential lock provided. We need a formula leopard 5 pickup truck not this shit, Don’t fool us.

BYD is pure JUNK. Look at all the videos of owners that show how poorly designed and the material is crap.

I have no idea why BYD is worthy any discussion, it will not have good quality at all. One simple fact, their worker base salary is 2000 rmb a month, but their average pay is 9000 rmb a month, which they work 7000 rmb a month of over time. If you expect good quality vehicles out of stressed worker who work well over 160 hours per week you are out of your damn mind.
