I've been living with the BYD Seal Premium for 5,000km now. It's time for a long-term update! Get the REAL story on reliability, range, tech quirks, and overall owner satisfaction with this Tesla Model 3 rival in Australia.
Key points I'll cover:
- Living with the BYD Seal daily: Pros, cons, and surprises of daily use.
- Actual range and charging experiences: How does it compare to the claimed range?
- Maintenance and reliability: Any issues or costs I've encountered.
- Technology quirks: What's working well and what's still frustrating.
- Would I recommend it? Honest assessment after 4,000km.
Find out if I miss the Tesla Model 3 that I did nearly 100,000km with in 2023.
Special thanks to Share EV (ShareEV.com.au) who organised the addition of this BYD Seal into their fleet, so that we could rent it for our long term review.
Check them out for all your ride share rental needs, corporate fleet rentals, short term holiday rentals and accident replacement vehicle rental needs.

Great review appreciate this, was weighing this up vs the new Tesla Model 3 (the one with the nice interior at last!). if both were the same price (here in NZ they are about 60-80K depending on load out) would you buy the mod3 high range or the seal premium? They're btoh about $70KNZD

Thanks for your feedback! I’m currently in NZ believe it or not, trying to scope out a review for another BYD model. Tbh it’s a difficult one because the main things that appeal to me on the Tesla are the driver app (unbeatable by any brand at this stage) and in Australia, the Tesla supercharger network does bring piece of mind for longer trips. The BYD however is a more premium feeling car, easier to live with from things like Apple CarPlay, the ultra comfortable seats and the exterior design. Australian pricing is $10-15k difference between each model and tbh I don’t see $10-15k of additional value in the Model 3. My pick would be the BYD Seal or a Model Y SR (not the LR)

Thanks for your comments, I’m preparing some figures and info on that and will post to our new website when that launches as I’ll compare that with the data from the Model 3 I conducted similar testing with. Tbh, the way Uber pays drivers, I still feel for most drivers, they’d be better in a comfortable late model hybrid at half the price of most EVs in the market. From a return perspective. Especially if not charging at home.

The current comparison could for many buyers be with the Model 3 Highland. You don't even mention it. It has a new suspension you could try and compare. I drive a older M3. I notice the road feel. I also am impressed by the substantial comfort and isolation of the seat. I have never experienced that combo. I had to recalibrate. Now it's not something I object to. I am an enthusiastic performance driver in this car.

@@roadtrip_reviews Sure. the ride of a car can meet let's say "the Toyota standard". One of isolated comfort in transport from A to B. That vehicle can be matched with minimized motor power. More of an appliance. Another standard might be "the BMW standard", where engaging with the car and the road are goals of the driver. More power and some road feel could be included in that standard. To me these are examples where two different cars can be reviewed with the differing strengths highlighted.

@roadtrip_reviews
@roadtrip_reviews 3 ай бұрын
Tesla Model 3 doesn’t drive itself either. It’s just a nice marketing pitch. In fact, the update Tesla released for my old Model 3 would block me out of the autosteer system if my hands weren’t on the steering wheel or if my eyes weren’t focused straight ahead. My friend was blocked out of this feature for 1 week in his car. On the highway, both do a good job of lane centred assisted steering, in cities and built up areas, the Tesla Model 3 does better most times. Since this video was filmed however, BYD has updated this and we will be checking this update soon.

We currently own the 2 smaller model from BYD (Dolphin, Atto 3) and I am very impressed of the quality of this brand. I was used to Japanese cars (Mazda) and BYD is already close; not yet at that level but already close (especially concerning the price.). I also really like the Seal. I’ve spent 19 years in the automotive industry, driving a variety of makes and models in that time across Australia and various countries around the world, the Tesla Model 3 is not a high performance car, it is a standard passenger sedan and as such, I review it against similar cars in it’s category. About the dumbest comment someone could make is suggesting someone buy a Rolls-Royce or Bentley if they don’t want a $60k car to drive comfortably 🙄 Just because an EV accelerates 0-100km/h in 6.1 seconds, doesn’t make it a “high performance car”

@roadtrip_reviews and if u read my comment I don't say the model 3 is a high performance car. And from your comments in your 19 years u haven't driven a high performance car then? Your review is totally flawed , getting more efficiency on a motorway compared to town is complete bull, unless you were doing 70 KLM’s on the motorway that is. Telling people they are going to get 550 KLM’s per charge is crazy ! Why do I say that because I’ve tested the BYD Seal performance and got 358 KLM’s or 4.5 KLM’s per kilowatt on a full charge !! And that’s my normal driving, Motorway at 120 KLM’s and town driving!! Not bad in my eyes but please don’t exaggerate the range it’s just crazy and wrong !! By the way I drive a Tesla Model Y Performance and I do think the BYD is a good car but not as efficient as a Tesla to include the Model Y. Why because it’s much heavier and motors and bearings not as good. My average efficiency in the Tesla by the way is 6.3 KLM’s per kilowatt . There is a huge difference in efficiency just for everyone to note. My model 3 LFP battery car was 8 KLM’s per kilowatt so saying the BYD was as efficient as it is basically totally incorrect by a country mile. I think the BYD is a very good car but has its drawbacks like every car.

Thanks for your feedback and for your accusations. You’re welcome to your opinions and that’s ok. For reference, in the state that I live in (more specifically the city I tested in) has a max 100km/h and 110km/h for the highway testing. Not many places in Australia where you can legally drive 120km/h. On the highway at 100km/h, I experienced 11.2kWh/100km in eco mode. My Model 3 that I drove almost 100,000km with in 2023 did not have anywhere near that efficiency on the highway. Around town however, the efficiency is worse than the Model 3 (weight and wheel size/tyre choice no doubt contribute) This isn’t a paid or sponsored review, I am only sharing the figures I was able to experience in 5,000km of personally driving the car. Further to this, this figure is NOT achievable on days where the a/c needs to run at higher settings or on normal drive mode. If you’re only able to get 358km per charge from a full charge in a Premium spec, YOU either have issues to address with your driving habits or judging by what I assume is your postcode in your username, live in the WORST Australian state to own an EV and achieve a decent range.

If I am right about where you live, the Tesla range in general will be superior to all EV brands and models I’ve tested so far when it comes to energy efficiency when running ac units as Tesla remains the only hvac system designed for an EV first, not for an ICE vehicle modified for use on EVs
