Suggestion: Use 57 stone gravel for the base...get 3/4" black iron pipe,,, lay it down and use it to screed and level the patio... so that deck base stops moving

or else use bags of paver base and tamp it, that way you when the ground moves later on you won't have unlevel spots and there won't be so much flex happening

I would recommend anchoring the pergola. I am a retired structural engineer who lived in the Lower Mainland, British Columbia, which is close to the NW. We did get strong Northerlies now and then. Just anchor the three columns into the retaining wall, and give the bolt a horizontal slip joint, not too tight, allowing for differential settlement between the deck and retaining wall. People would always complain when I requested anchorage, and I would tell them that structures are not designed for nice sunny days.) Cheers from Canada.

Hi there, you've convinced us to give this system a try! We have a very long rectangle of dead space in our yard so we're wondering if staggering the planks would be better in our case - to make it more like one solid piece. Do you think this is a good or bad idea given what your experience?

thanks for showcasing this interesting idea. do you think this system could be installed over an existing wood deck?
@MichaelJ674
@MichaelJ674 Ай бұрын
I like this idea for a semi-temporary deck, but I would definitely want to put down a base of compacted crushed rock underneath. Presumably that would remove most of the bounce. A little bounce I could live with since it’s all clipped together. I personally wouldn’t put any structures on top of it, even that relatively light weight pergola. It’s fun to see the different things available out there even if I might not use them myself. As you say, time will tell if the deck system holds up or not.

As others have said, this is a gimmick that wont last. There's a similar system that was sold in the uk but it was a nightmare with problems and no one sells it any more. It was designed initially for shed bases but was useless as decking support because it is like a trampoline in direct sun/hot weather and the boards expand and pop out the sub frames. The composite boards warp and pool water, then water gets trapped in the frames and because it doesn't dry out like wood, this provides the ideal conditions for algae to skin over and spread like crazy.

It’s a very cool concept but I don’t like how much flex there is in the deck system. I also question the lifetime of the plastic used in the base. The elements tend to make some plastics very brittle and weak. If you could do an update I few years down the line and let us know how it’s going that would be great.

@Mike-sh2cb
@Mike-sh2cb Жыл бұрын
@@BYOTools Cheers Brett for taking the time to reply. It is greatly appreciated and noted! I understood the levelling when you using this system on soil. But when on cement or tiles this is not possible with this system. Unless of course you relevel (slope etc) all. Which as you know is not cost effective especially when the slope is there for rain water etc. Basically my point is that i don't understand all these companies that produce systems such as these that don't include a basic adjustment system in the base plates or joints. Maybe my logic and rationale is too basic but i built my first deck in 2001, knowing nothing, for a bar i owned, so a huge amount of foot traffic and weight. It was on top of old roman stones in a street, turned pedestrian, so nothing could be fixed to the stones. It was 5m by 4m. It lasted 15 years with zero adjustments. As i was building it, all i was thinking that someone soon will design and patent base plates with adjustments to avoid all of the extra pieces of wood, screws, time etc The next deck i built, 10 years later, i discovered various models that tried to do it, but not with the quality. I am amazed that 2023 there is not a simlple, reenforced plastic base plate system for such a common product. Or maybe there is and I haven't seen it yet. I know that in the states you guys have a much wider range of products to us over here. Sorry for the incredibly long response. Apologies!! Hope you have a great day and please keep on sharing your great videos and your superb drone skills!!

I don't live in hurricane country, either, but we do get strong winds. An 85 mph took my 10x10 shed down the back alley one day. Since the roof and one side panel are not solid and air can flow through, I doubt there's enough solid mass for the wind to pick it up or bliw it over.

Been in the construction trade for 20 years Evan and one of the best things about my job is that I'm always taking on new and different endeavors because I never want to give my audience the same exact project twice. I take on many large projects every year and will continue to do so as long as I feel it is a benefit to my audience because that's the most important thing to me. Also, note that I have a 2 year old and a 5 month old right now and being able to take on smaller and simpler projects like this is a welcome relief since I can still get out weekly or bi-weekly videos on KZfaq but also be there for my family. Thanks for watching in any case.

Civility, respect and patience just seem to be actions that don't happen as much now. Take a breath, think, and ask yourself what value will my comment add? That's a weird looking trampoline, judging by the amount of bounce it has and total lack of rigidity in the design of the system. Having the 'deck' dead-level with the grass seems like a terrible idea too- gonna chew the hell the out of the edges when mowing the lawn and keeping it clean with not be any fun ( mowed grass and pine-needles fill up the gaps int he deck and rot on top of the membrane ). Anyone else notice that the area of 'dead' grass was an almost perfect square too? Funny that...
