This is a Skype interview with the wonderful author, speaker & spiritual teacher, Byron Katie, talking intimately about how The Work affects romantic relationships and how we can find true love when we practice The Work.
Katie's work has profoundly impacted my life in immeasurable ways and it fills me with heartfelt joy to be able to pass it on.
Katie has on job, to end suffering. She calls her method The Work, which is a simple process of inquiry that anyone can do. The Work consists of four questions and a turnaround, which is a way of experiencing the opposite of what you believe.
Byron Katie's six books include, 'I Need Your Love, Is That True', and 'Loving What Is'.
You will find more information on Katie at her website.
www.thework.com
And Katie will be attending Alternatives in London in June/July 2016. Well worth seeing her if you live in the UK.

Wow, I love this quote at 14:36: "people looking for a partner, I can just say: it is unnecessary, don't even look, it is not possible not to have a relationship." Very profound. Thank you for posting this!

Andrea, I'm really glad that I found you. Rarely do I ever meet a woman of color who is familiar with BK's work. I've read all of her books several times and have never not found her wisdom to give me the answers to my questions. One of my favorite quotes from one of her books is the one you mentioned "no two people have ever met"..all of life is a projection. A woman is no more or less than I perceive her to be. I've discovered that most of us have been looking for others to do something that they couldn't do and that we are unwilling to do for ourselves. So called love relationships are a wonderful place to hide and many of us go there to set up camp looking for someone to live out our script. As soon as the other no longer lives out that script the relationship ends. Too many of us (both men and women) are running around wearing these social masks, hiding behind labels such as job titles, cars, houses, brand names, degrees, etc and all of those things are decaying as I write this. We're looking for love not realizing that we are already are that which we seek. I subscribed to your channel. Looking forward to seeing more videos from you.

+Rick B thank you for taking the time in writing such a detailed response. I agree with you wholeheartedly. Katie's Work blew my mind around the idea of love & relationships, which you have so clearly described. In my opinion, Katie gives us the HOW to connect with these concepts of love without needing or requiring the other to change. So much more freedom. Much more scope for possibility and connection and intimacy - knowing that we are the source of Love and can always feel that no matter who we are with. That understanding has been profound and life changing for me and I love passing that wisdom & gift on.

+Andrea Crump Its liberating and perhaps a bit disconcerting to discover that the way we've been looking at and approaching love relationships is all wrong. What I mean by wrong is it doesn't give us the desired outcome that we wish for. Katie, said something when I saw her in person many years ago..."I'm certain that everybody loves me but I don't expect them to know that yet." Who we love is our business and who loves us is theirs. I don't need anyone's permission to love them and when you realize this very fact you are free.t The wisdom of how to truly love someone has always resided within us and the questions helps us to access this wisdom. Like BK always says if you want to be depressed get a past and if you want to be fearful get a future. I love you and I love Katie. Thanks again. I hope our paths cross again soon.

Thank you for sharing Andrea! Love Byron Katie!! she radiates love and acceptance. i have been doing the work and it has changed my life! Some people confuse it with denial but its not! Its a self evaluation to question our perception (which is distorted most of the time due to learned behaviors) so sad!

+Andrea Crump Andrea - I'd just like to echo the comments below me about this being possibly one of the best interviews of her I've ever seen. I wrote my earlier comments before I had seen the whole video. Fantastic video and I keep getting more out of it. I love how open and freely Katie gives insights into her personal life. Very admirable. Can I ask - is this an interview set up by you, or is it from her 'Conversations'? I love her 'Conversations' videos and would also love to find more of them. Thanks for the great interview.

This is an interview set up by me and not one of the 'conversations' series, which follows a different format it seems. so glad that you're getting value from the interview.

14:36: don't attach importance to the body Gay Hendricks, specialist in relationships: "You've probably heard that you should be very open to meeting anyone for a date - because you never know in what package your ideal mate will show up. We believe this is a time waster and will lead you into the arms of unsuitable partners. Attracting true love - and not just a date - requires you to get very clear on the kinds of qualities you want (and don't want) in a mate. Love does not conquer all. Becoming involved with someone who has traits that are not agreeable to you will only lead to disappointment later. That's why we think you should get really specific about your future partner - right down to physical characteristics, lifestyle preferences, and how they will relate to you in a relationship." 19:20: how do you feel when you believe the thought "I want a partner"? Not bad, coz it's the truth of human condition, to want to relate because this is how we thrive. How do I feel when I believe the thought "I NEED a partner"? Pretty bad. Needy. Beggar. In the LOA, they say to yearn deeply, and feel in your body as i fit was already yours, as to raise your vibrations thus your attraction of the specific mate. Seems it goes both ways.

Katie is not about the Law of Attraction, she is about finding your own truth. Wanting a partner is the truth of human condition, how can you say that? How can you speak for everybody? The only thing you can know, is if you want a partner in this moment. The Work is just a great tool to help you find your answers. And then someone is attracted to you or not.

Women in general don’t accept that there is a verifiable objective reality; ie. instead they have their persobal thruths/beliefs,...and they use it often to relativize all responsibilities and to remove themselves from any significant accountability

One more thing about Byron Katie. Its a stage show. She can´t speak about anything else than worksheets, and four questions. If a person coming up on the scene, this person has already accepted her one-sided and biased version of cognitive therapy. That´s, in clever people, scientifical circles called subjective validation. I have been there, just for fun, and was cast down from the scene by bodyguards, when I begin to ask her philosophical inquiries - and I am a MA in philosophy, so that I know what philosophical inquiry is!

+Morten Tolboll As I was reading your comment I was reading it as though you are angry or upset. I do understand I could be wrong about that, though I am wondering if the way you approached Byron Katie was with an interpersonal style that could be perceived as less than kind. If your purpose for going on stage and speaking with Katie was for the sole intent to discredit her work in front of a crowd, then from my perspective that would seem highly inappropriate. As I see that scene happening in my mind, I think I would also decide to ask you to leave the stage. Whether right or wrong in your eyes, at a Byron Katie event most people seem go to learn about The Work and not how for a seminar on how to engage in philosophical debate. After all, The Work what she is known for. I have also never heard her claim to be a philosopher or to understand Eastern spiritual traditions. In fact, from what I have read and listened to she has openly discussed that she did not "come from that world" and did not have terms to put on her experience until much later when she was involved with "spiritual people." My main point is that Byron Katie is not a philosopher, she does not call herself a spiritual teacher, and I have heard her plainly state that all she has to offer anyone are the four questions and turnaround. With that in my mind, it seems like expecting more from her comes only from the contents of your mind. In fact, it seems like you would have to be actively ignoring her frequent statements that she is not what you seem to think she should be to gain your approval. If you are ignoring those statements she has made then you're either (a) not doing your research or (b) you too have fallen into the trap of cognitive bias (which, if you know as much about this stuff as you allude to, you'd know it's nearly impossible to avoid bias because our brains have evolved to be efficient and not accurate or honest). I'm not saying that critical thinking, the scientific method, or philosophical inquiry are bad or that they shouldn't be applied to The Work. What I am saying is that based on what I know of Byron Katie your approach to interacting with her was contextually inappropriate. It seems your approach was meant more to gain a sense of validation or to aggrandize your perception of your knowledge rather than to actually understand her or anyone else. I don't begrudge you if you don't like Byron Katie. In fact, as a psychotherapist I have gone back and forth myself. Still, I felt like your approach to this was misguided. If you want a philosophical debate, then debate The Work with your philosophy colleagues. Byron Katie never claimed the knowledge or skill to engage in such dialogues in the first place.

Morten Tolboll Most theories of psychotherapy have direct philosophical underpinnings. For example, all humanistic orientations are based off of phenomenology. Postmodern theories of psychotherapy are often have constructivist philosophical underpinnings. Solution-focused therapy is based on ideas associated with pragmatism. Behavioral approaches often incorporate the idea of teleology in explanations of human behavior. Experiential therapies (e.g., Gestalt therapy) are based directly off of Eastern philosophical ideals. In short, I wouldn't go assuming I don't know about philosophy because I'm a psychotherapist.
@CMch22
@CMch22 8 жыл бұрын
Morten Tolboll I can see by your response to my psychotherapy and philosophy comment that you do not actually know about psychotherapy theory. It is all based off of philosophy, so it has everything to do with philosophy. That's where it all started. Also, I have been involved in spirituality for a long time. Even so, I am not interested in being accepted or rejected from a zen monastery. I don't want to live in a monastery, that is not an interest of mine. Also, I'm not really defending Byron Katie as much as pointing out my observation that your approach to making your point wasn't effective given the context. It also seems like you believe she should know more about spirituality and philosophy than she does, which does not make sense to me. She does not claim to be a spiritual guru. If others call her one, that cannot be controlled by her. I'm also not sure your anti-American prejudice is very Zen. Anyway, this will be my last response. I can see that your anger overrides your intellect.
@carmenl163

What is your point? That she doesn't do philosophical inquiries? Well, that's right. She does another form of inquiry. So why bother here on stage with that? To me, it is like jumping on stage with Beyonce and asking here to sing Rihanna songs. Not relevant at all.
