February has given us an unusual bounty of flying weather in 2023. Today was no exception.
Hannibal, Missouri, has a wonderful municipal airport. It is well maintained and brags a late model courtesy car. The terminal was well decorated and the bathrooms were spotless.
You should fly to KHAE. We drove downtown to Finn’s Restaurant. Joseph served us the most delicious catfish, which makes sense, because Hannibal is on the Mississippi River. Joseph is 17 and wants to become a private pilot.
The price of gas is $5.15 per gallon at 3MY (Mount Hawley near Peoria). Because the mighty Skylane burns 13 gallons per hour (we were flying 150 miles per hour), we decided to drop by on the way back to Aurora from Hannibal.
We executed the Runway 18 RNAV approach for practice. Things went smoothly, although the aircraft tended to float down the runway. This aircraft was built in 1962, so it takes a refined level of finesse to master the proper technique. The landing was soft, but not textbook.
