Rest in peace, Kirky. Man this one hurt. Ground-breaking pioneers. They were making proto-techno in the late 70s/early 80s. I used to LOVE them, they helped me thru a very difficult childhood - wracked with pain, they offered me an oasis of happiness, a sliver of solace. Growing up in the states, I remember the fight, the battle, to try to get our hands on ONE MORE hard to find import 12" single or album of theirs. But u know what? The work that it took made it all the sweeter when we finally got it onto our turntable. Man were those times great. But now, one-by-one, the lights are going out, we are leaving the party. So sad, but those that experienced them will cherish those days in our hearts forever, and sip the memories like fine wine that has aged well. Thanks for all the good times Kirk and Mallinder. Legends.

I have been sending links to my daughter from Cabaret Voltaire, Einstürzende Neubauten, Test Department, Throbbing Gristle and SPK telling her that this is what listening to 80's music means to me. After listening to some of these links I'm sending her, I literally have my heart racing and inspiration surging! This is what I grew up with and was listening to in my teens and twenties....40 years ago! Highly inspirational and influential. Can the world be as sad as it seems?

The most underrated band of all time. I listen to a lot of 6 music over the years but have never heard the Cabs being played. Why is this? U.S/European industrial, mid/late 80’s Detroit techno, late 80’s bleep techno, ‘rave’, 90’s electronics, 00’s cut up electronics etc: you all owe a debt to Kirk. Rest in bloody peace man: do right, you f**kin did

I used to hear that Richard H Kirk would frequent The Green Room on Devonshire Street, Sheffield, and used to go in there in the hopes of running into another local legend (like I did Phil Oakey in Record Collector), but sadly I never did. I'll keep going there though, Richard, even though I'll never get to pass those dreamt-of five minutes with you.

Remembering that "Do right...!" phrase brought me here - and the memory of this extraordinary video: that editing, that over-the-top crane shot... and, above all, that weird American gothic preacher man, with his incredible face, and his daughter! What was that all about, and where did that idea come from? And then that dance they do! They resonate somehow, but I'm not sure why. Explanations for the ideas behind this extraordinary visual mash-up welcome! Certainly, a clearly low-budget DIY video that remains very memorable...

As far as the camera goes, the director Peter Care invented the contraption; it was relatively low budget and he used it also on the Johnny Yesno film he made with CV, and then later a ABC music video.

Yeah there's all kinds of signalling in that clip. Like the military jacket he's wearing that appears to be WWII Wermacht issue, and the yuppie suit jacket he has on in other shots that's cut in a similar style. It's like a snarky political piece about authority and capitalism and religion and stuff... I thought was really deep and cool when I first heard it back in the 90s, and the video definitely makes it even more awesome - glad I'm not the only one who digs it!

FANTASTIC! LOVE IT! Pre Art of Noise. Art of Noise was so influenced by this, had to be. I like Caberet Voltaire's very early works, that are strictly instrumental & more experimental. I really didn't think, that anyone remembered this eclectic & obscure era of musical evolution.

A brilliant fusion of music (new wave, electronic, proto electro etc...) this would get called "electronica" now . This was probably their only "hit" (by the gods, listen to the 12 inch version, for it is astonishing) But there was no actual genre for Cabaret Voltaire. Every album was brilliantly challenging, yet always had a tune you could hum. Hit the North!
