2 жыл бұрын

In Episode 5 of our off grid cabin build series, we tackle a lot of small jobs that will make a big difference to our cabin build project and our aim to live completely offgrid on our homestead in Spain.
We finally bought a new strimmer to help us clear the land, and have included a little Stihl FS 235 review for you. We also started to collect the first harvest of our olives, to try brining them ourselves at home.
Cabin build progress sees us order the light steel frame we're going to use to build the walls and roof of the cabin and get the materials delivered. And we also share a cabin design "tour" with you all, to show you how we plan to use the space.
We also finally had our first appointment with the ayuntamiento to talk about the planning permissions... watch to see how that went....!

We're Danny and Kate. 5 years ago we moved from the UK to Barcelona, and after a few years enjoying the busy city, sunny beaches and snow-capped mountains it's time for a new adventure. We've recently bought land in Spain, in the mountains of Catalunya, to build a mortgage free tiny house and start a self-sustainable off-grid homestead to live off the land.

hi. will keep it brief. loving your channel and enthusiasm. have 3 comments that i hope you will find useful. 1. cut off exposed dpc [damp proof course] don't forget this works both ways. when it rains your cabin will be effectively sitting in puddles otherwise. 2. as i assume you don't plan to drink from your aljibe [cistern] have you considered a couple of goldfish? that's not a wind up, fish poo makes great fertilizer and the little buggers will gorge on mozzy larvae. and, 3. grapes will only grow as far as i'm aware on this years growth so after cropping cut right back to create your desired shape for next season then train new growth to suit. good luck. David.

With all the cuttings and debris you could create dead hedhing, to accomodate small wildlife and hopefully increase biodiversity in the end. They really work well and also act as corridors for animals such as foxes, deer, grouse and other animals endemic to the Catalunya region.

You should prepare the ground and plant champagne and seedless grapes. Then it is about growing, trimming, fertilizing, and so on. It is a study and hands-on experience ting. What I would have planted all over is all kinds of citrus, apricot, peaches, and warm-weather fruits. If u get a grow-house u can plant all kinds of tropical fruits inside as well. Make a garden of Eden. Endless possibilities there.

All very good ideas. Thank you. Eventually we will get to these types of projects! But they can cost a lot of money and we need to be there to care for a lot of the plants daily when they are young seedlings. All in time 😁

@@SmithsdaleFarm Little by little. U are young. Plenty of time. But plant as soon as u can. Trees take time to grow. So when u have family u can harvest. The most important for u guys is to learn to save as much water as u can and learn to drip irrigate and automation. Tank under the gutter to catch every drop of rain water. And once or twice a year fertilize and trim. Nature takes care of the rest. Best of luck.

olives are an alternate bear fruit so maybe wait two harvests before hacking. some ground cover (natural grasses) are good for avoiding soil erosion and produce organic matter into the soil as they decay when you mow/weed them with the strimmer. You can likely find your soil types through a government GIS tool like you used to search your Cadastral info, which can help you decide what irrigation and nutrients/pest protection will be best long term.

You've got a very interesting block of land there, I love all the rocks, though you've got more than I'd enjoy digging in 😅 We've been using an FS85 for about 15 years, and haven't had an ounce of trouble with it. We've got a metal blade on ours and it rips through most stuff, including the corrugated iron on the walls of the sheds if we're not careful 😂. You can separate the bit of grape off when it's dormant, but it might be worth taking some cuttings, which take easily from grapes, to give you a backup. Is the pine tree a pine nut tree? I grew some of them and carobs and olives at our last place, but left before they got old enough to fruit. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the place and going through the previous episodes 👍

Be careful buying a chipper because most of the cheaper ones cannot satisfactorily chip with enough result, the kinds of branches I see you moving.Maybe complete all the branches in piles THEN rent or borrow a strong commercial machine ( maybe one you tow behind your car) . If you do not have a tow bar - get one, you will need it. Also keep an eye out for a reliable trailer ( which will require brake lights and, possibly registration.)

The termites that have been watching you build your cabin were eagerly waiting for new food to arrive but were not amused when those steel studs showed up. I like building inner walls (non-load bearing) with steel studs but I find that you have to be careful how you attach items like shelving, cabinets and other items which will place a load stress on them. I am looking forward to hearing how you deal with the Spanish, laid back attitude of regulation. From watching many others in Spain and seeing similar frustration, it would almost seem like a lot of what needs to be done should just be done and then beg for forgiveness if it ever comes to it. It seems as if most in power just don't really care unless you bring the problem to them. Then they just drag it out like some sort of job security through typical bureaucracy.

Bad luck, termites! Looking forward to using the steel framing - it’s the first time we’ve used it, but it looks simple enough, having watched some others build something similar from it. Thanks for the tips about shelving etc. The cabin won’t have many things mounted to the walls so we should be fine with that, hopefully! 🤞🏻

@SmithsdaleFarm
@SmithsdaleFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. We find it hard to comment on permits, and legality etc, because we don’t want to give people the wrong information or ideas about their own possibilities. In general, anything like this needs permission from the town hall, and/or for a construction tax to be paid. But all the rules and regulations differ from village to village, and region to region, so we always advise that people speak to their local Ayuntamiento (town hall) about their own specific situation. 🙂

Unfortunately a pickup is just way out of our budget as a second vehicle, and we would have had a nightmare trying to park it in Barcelona as our primary when we’re not at the land…! We are searching for a trailer though! It will definitely make things a lot easier!

Malheureusement, pour le moment, la maison en pierre n'a pas de permis d'habitation 🥲

So, after over one year of ownership you don´t know what to do or what you can possibly do in that property, if anything. Blame on the town hall though. Weird.

If you don’t enjoy our videos, don’t watch. Find another channel you prefer 🙃 Since we were confined to Barcelona for most of our ownership so far (thanks covid!) or have been working hard in our jobs to earn the money the fund the project, we’ve only spent about 40 days on the land since we purchase it… mostly weekends or bank holiday days (therefore no way to meet with the people we need to meet with)… we already know more or less what the rules are, but getting an appointment to talk to the local experts is harder than you might imagine. We’re not here to race through. This is a lifestyle choice. If you expect to watch 4 videos and see a finished house, you might want to find someone else to watch. If you want to follow an honest account of building a debt free rural homestead, subscribe and come along for the ride. It’s likely to be a bumpy one… and we’re ok with that… 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@SmithsdaleFarm Well, so far it´s been quite boring TBH, but I was hoping to see your plan evolve. Now I see there is no plan, you´re right, I move on. All that excuses are pointless, you should have done your research before buying. Good luck. Bye.

@@mrfechu6281 See you, bye 👋🏻 P.S. we do have plans. But would you share the ending to your book, before you’d got the chapters in order?! 😉
