I just checked mine. A few things I’ve learned: you don’t have to remove the wipers, move them to the up position and turn your ignition off. The screw you need to remove and the plug: unscrew the screw, then screw it back in a little and pull the plug right out

On a left hand car it's much easier. Only 3 clips and there is no need to remove the wipers. It was clean so didn't clean much. Thank you Eric :)

In the UK we get alot of rain and on the filter side we are recommended to seal the cover as water gets through and tends to leak through the filter into the car

originally there is actually a seal which should also be replaced when changing the pollen filter. just use some bitumen sealing tape. Greetings from Germany 😄 Adrian

I just changed my filter and I see the issue now. The clips which hold the cover on are useless. It's not at all clear how to clip it back into place. Looking at mine and comparing to this video, for some reason my middle clip is missing completely (just the metal with the hole), and on the right-hand clip it actually looks like what I see in this video (just the rubber showing with no plastic attached to it - I suspect I pulled the plastic part off the rubber when removing the cover). Why couldn't Ford just use three screws for this, just like they did with the left-hand clip, instead of these dumb fragile clips! I have no idea what to do now.

Excellent video, I have a problem with clear water in the passenger front and back foot well due to rain water entering the car. I need to check the Pollen Filter housing seal to the car body and the seal between the plastic shield for the air cover and the windshield. Your video covered both issues. Thank you.

You're most welcome mate. It's not as much of an issue for us here in Australia as we have a very dry climate, but yeah, definitely make sure your seals are intact if your car is outside a lot in the rain.

Very well done! I have a similar car, only the wheel is on the left side, and seeing your video I will follow your steps (mirrored for my wheel) and clean that area. Where can I find some spare plastic clips for those covers?
@Horus_Works
@Horus_Works 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ovidiu, glad you liked the video! Haha, yep most people will find it odd that my steering wheel is on that side! It's not a hard job by the way, the trickiest part for me was taking the wiper arms off, so if yours are stuck too, just use a puller like I did. About the plastic clips, mine were okay so I didn't look for any new ones, but if I were you I would look in Facebook Ford Focus groups. Lots of people are parting out Mk1 Focus cars, and even if you're across the world, they are super light and small to post, so it wouldn't cost much to have them sent to you. Hope that helps, please give the vid a like👍 and click subscribe if you want to see more 😀 best of luck with your project!

Awesome information and great help as i'm hoping to be a happy owner of a focus one day. One thing I noticed (and many other does this as well) is no matter how small the task, is unplugging the negative terminal on the battery to minimize shorts while pluging/ unpluging conectors. Otherwise great content ^^

Disconnecting the battery for unplugging the connector of the windshield wipers is going overboard.. Just have no one touch the windshield wiper lever and leave the key out of the ignition. Even if it would turn on after all that, you would have to do a lot of effort to make those contacts touch the chassis. And even if all that actually happened (similar do walking out of your front door and having a piano fall onto you) it would just blow a fuse.
@Horus_Works
@Horus_Works 3 жыл бұрын
@@Engineer9736 I mostly recommended it as water was involved to clean the entire area out. Besides the wipers, there are other electrical connectors up at the firewall area. A moment's effort disconnecting the battery avoids any blown fuses or otherwise.

Thanks so much for this video! Changed my filter today, and that was much needed! Didn't have to clean though, because I have an amazing mechanic that fixed my viper mechanism last year and cleaned it out. However I did manage to loose that one Philips head screw. Any thought on what kind it is, right now I'm screwless.

Job well done,very nice but you have missed out probably the most important step.You should always replace the sealing gasket under the filter housing.Failure to do this will lead to a wet carpet in the passenger footwell,if you can't find one you can use a mastic,not silicone sealer on top of the remaining original seal and then place the housing on top.Hope this helps.

Nice job and prezentation.. Pay attention ... It is not so important that the plastic under the wiper on the passenger's side adheres to the windshield, but that the plastic channel drain under the windshield is pulled exactly so that the water that accidentally enters there can be carried out of the filter into other side drains. if this is not done correctly, then the water falls on the filter and enters the cabin at the passenger's feet. This happened to me and it took me 2 months to figure out where the water enters the cab at the passenger’s feet

Yes this has been commended by many others as well... Do it especially if there is a lot of rain where you live 👍 I've had the car like this, without the sealant for a year now with no problem, but then again I am in a dry climate in Australia.

Another great video. My wipers will not return to "home" position after I turn them off, or give them a "bump" when misting. I have to "time it" and shut them off when they hit bottom. Any idea what is causing this? Thanks again for the content. You are a lifesaver!

Hey mate, ooo that's an interesting one - I've never encountered that before... I'd say, since your wiper arms move freely, your wiper motor is okay, and the mechanism too. So I would say it's probably the relay - find your wiper relay in the ruse box, and try replacing it... I'd start there, good luck! 👍

QUESTION: Can anybody explain how the clips work? How does each plastic side connect together? Where there is only rubber showing (presumably the plastic part came off completely when the cover was removed), how do I disconnect the two plastic halves, and then how to connect the plastic to the rubber?

Hey mate, I'm not sure that Ford sell them any more, so what I would do is go to a wrecking yard to see if you could get some others from an old wreck. If that's not an option, jump on Facebook and ask in the Focus MK1 groups in anyone is pulling apart a Mk1. There are always people selling Focus parts on there, especially in the UK, and even if you have to get it shipped overseas, it would be very cheap because the parts are so small and light.

Anything in the section in front of the filter is no issue. There are no twigs and leafs going through it. I would have let the windshield wiper section alone. A lot of effort and money and risk for breaking more stuff, and nothing gained by doing the windshield wiper section. Just replace the filter and clean the area directly around it and it’s all good. Edit: 9:40 lmao, you’re going way overboard. Are you also going to vacuum clean the road before you drive over it 😂

Thank you for your comment Richard. I would say that the benefit in cleaning out the whole plenum area, including underneath the wipers, it to clear out the debris that traps dirt and moisture there. And not to mention the spiders in my homeland of Australia - no thanks. The deris in your plenum can make it's way onto your clean cabin filter, causing a musty smell in damp climates, and let's not forget our old friend - rust. The cowel is one of the worst areas for rust so it's worth keeping clean. Check out the video I made about rust prevention on these cars, where I clean out the front wings. But there is no point if you don't clean out the plenum first. Hope that helps explain the method to my madness. 👍
