Thanks, I'm getting a lot out of this series. I'm in IT, but I didn't know much about the history of telecommunications.

That is a very clean demark, I never saw one that was labeled that well in the field.

Great, great, great video! I've worked in the industry for over 18 years and there is still stuff that I learned from this video. One being that RJ stood for registered jack. i just always took RJ at face value since that's the terminology we used in the work environment. Regarding the pulse setting, I wonder if that still works in today's telephone systems. I found it fascinating as a kid to learn if my keys in my CPE were broken that I could mimic the pulsing and dial out using the switch hook.

Dial phones still work in Canada. The CRTC here has mandated that as long as there are customers who want dial phones the phone companies must support them.

Sad. I haven't used a rotary dial since the 70's or 80's. In fact I haven't used a wired telephone in The Last 5 or 10 years. Smartphones are the way to go!

I noticed you said in the last video that you didn't know why it was called a "B-box". I don't know if anyone answered that or not, but if I were to guess it would stand for "Binder Box". Although techs in my company call them "peds" short for pedestals, they house whatever binder groups are on that lead. Ones that house remote line equipment are call remotes or "MUX" units.

you mentioned the cable company sells Dial-tone, how is that different from the telephone company? Or what are the uses of the two?

Exactly. Never know when that cell tower goes out in a hurricane or something so having a landline could be an important lifeline as long as there's backup power somewhere.

What's the difference between CPE & a modem?
@CableSupply
@CableSupply 5 жыл бұрын
CPE stands for Customer Provided Equipment. Which means anything that the customer has purchased on their own. A modem can be a CPE if the customer purchased it. For example if the phone company provides the equipment , they own it, they will take it back at the end of the contract that equipment is NOT CPE.

It is reasonable to understand numbers on the dial but then why do we require alphabets on the dial?
@CableSupply

Alphabets were used for the name of the local telephone exchanges. For example DAvenport5 9254 = DA5-9254 or 325-9254 (my Wife's old phone number). Davenpot5 was the name for an telephone exchange in the Philadelphia area. It was an easy to remember a phone number. Checkout the old song by Glen Miller "PENNSYLVANIA 6-5000" (PE6-5000 or today that phone number would be 736-5000) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rt-ed9ebrrq9gmg.html.
