What do you think I should do? There has been many twists and turns with this one but I’m looking forward to the next update. Just when I was ready to make the change, this happens! I have grown many tropical plants in water long term (hydroponically) from monsteras to orchids but surprisingly I have never tried with a cactus. Some reasons I’ve grown plants in water: -uses less water than traditional soil -less pests compared to growing in soil -Less chance of rot to your plants I of course will continue to update along the way and If you found this helpful, consider following along for more plant care and plant projects. Leave any questions down below!

From my experience growing cacti and succulents hydroponically, definitely wait it out! They seem to love being hydroponic, but it takes them a bit to adjust to the new medium. Just try to keep the water levels high to encourage new roots to grow down, then let some roots be exposed to air once they're long enough! ALSO! Add 10ml 3% H2O2 to 1 gallon water to help with breathing and possible root rot/infection. Good luck!!!

I recently went to a place where a Woman was growing orchids and she was using lava rock and charcoal in a hanging basket to grow them and they were actually thriving i had never heard of that before

Mhhh I think that it's a bit differenti for cacti. As a cactus owner, my beefs grow perfectly in soil, and you should try to report her now so, after the fruits are ready, she can focus on rooting again. Remember that, even tho you keep plants in water to reduce its usage, the same amount of water that you change weekly (i think) in that Glass IS the same that a cactus needs weekly so it's already balanced. 🥰
@sandy_carpetsthesecond5013Ай бұрын
It's hard to say, honestly. Cacti and succulents can definitely be grown hydroponically and aquaponically (I'm doing so myself with sedums) but I never had a complete loss of roots like you did. You can try to keep it in water if you raise the water level high enough to encourage more roots if you still wanna try, but it's gonna be risky if you do.

First put a bit of dirt in the water when you would normally add more water to prepare the roots for soil, otherwise the sensitive roots won’t take to soil and it will be a failed replanting. If you want to keep the plant in water, put some fertilizer beads in there for some nutrients. This will help the plant continue to grow otherwise it will put itself into a hibernation phase. It will no longer grow, but it won’t die either. Keep adding dirt once a week (or whenever you usually add more water) until the water gets muddy

When i worked at a farm they told that a lot of plants do "death blooms". If the plant is super stressed and thinks its dying or the emvironment isnt going to let them do a full life cycle, sometimes they put all their eneergy into flowers and seeds so they can spread their seeds before they die. Idk anything about a cactus but, it might be that
@DigitalhunnyАй бұрын
Some plants when they are dying toss out everything that they have to reproduce just ONE last time. My family calls this, "the plants, last hurrah". If you got this cactus & she was already flowering, she could have been there on her own. You took her in, gave her new stuff & she dropped her roots to grow new ones in the water, right? So, if she had flowered pre-water growth, this could just be the continuation of _that_ original reproductive spurt? She grew al, new roots & appears to be doing fine _BUT,_ instinctively how does she feel to YOU? Do YOU think she's doing okay or that she's struggling? This one absolutely _is_ a, "go with your gut" type situation. You know this plant best, bestie! ❤❤❤

Given how mature the seed pods are, the cactus can probably go in an arid soil, drop the seed pods, and start growing roots again. Layer stones with cactus soil so it can reach down with its roots to access more water at the bottom. That’s what they do in the wild. Wild cactus roots are HUGE and shoot out in all directions in search of water.

Cactus can be grown in water. It needs to be changed frequently. You can even do soil and then down to water. Like in a 2 liter upside down. With the nozzle end a couple inches above another container with water. Youll have dirt roots then it transitions to water roots.

I think the water is causing it to flower because it thinks it's the rare rain. So it's making flowers/seeds to help propagate when the weather is back to optimal. Didn't know how long it can last in that mode. Kind of similar for citrus. You let the leaves wilt a little and then water plenty after and it will flower and grow fruit if you pollinate. But if you keep watering the flowers stop. So you have to cycle making it flower and watering it because it won't flower if you water it too often and it won't grow the fruit well if you don't water.
@user-pt1cz4ot1eАй бұрын
Awe, I hope they have viable seed. My indoor cacti sometimes slip by and have flowers, and I don’t get them outside to our bees fast enough. Sometimes they even grow pods, but there’s nothing more than the goop inside. If they’re outside, I always get chonky ones with loads of seeds. My torch cacti seem to be reproducing like rats. I will eventually have an army of cacti to surround my entire property. 😂

The cactus is too small to survive with constant water! It needs some loamy soil, for sure. Typically only big boys with large storage capabilities can survive with their roots dipping their toes in water like this. The roots probably got infected due to the moisture.
@DiamondDiancie10Ай бұрын
I grow even tiny cacti in water just fine! But, I do add 10ml 3% H2O2 and 2ml B. amyloliquefaciens to my solution to help with root rot and oxygenation. It definitely isn't a good idea to grow in just water as that's just asking for root rot; but, I get incredibly healthy roots in plants of all sorts from succulents to herbs and ginger to squash by adding those two things! H2O2 helps add extra oxygen and keep the water clean, while the Bacillus culture is one that eats fungal spores and other bacteria that could harm the plant.
