Cafe Offers Coffee Cups Made of Clay as Greener Option

Coffee, we just can’t live without it, but our on-the-go consumption sends billions of single-use coffee cups to landfills every year. A company in California is trying out an alternative cup in hopes of reducing waste. Verve Coffee Roasters tells KCBS it will be offering a ceramic disposable cup, hoping customers will want the more environmentally friendly option. The creator of the ceramic cups says it’s not exactly a novel idea. Inside Edition Digital’s Mara Montalbano has more.

Yeah, I saw a video of a family of chai clay cup makers. They worked 16-hour days, 7 days per week, and made little profit, but they were happy. One of the workers sent for his bride from their village and surprised her with a room that he had recently rented. It was the size of a closet, but she absolutely loved it. He told her it would also be used to store extra clay cups. I found it to be interesting af.

People aren't seeming to understand that this is not about the re-useability of the cups, it's just replacing plastic with a more environmentally friendly alternative. Plastic does not break down when put in trash or landfills, but the clay cups will. Too many nay-sayers in these comments. It's a good idea!

So if this is 3d printed on the go, it can't be in any way kiln fired to seal it up, the last thing I want his a hot liquid going into a container "mined from the Earth" that is in no way sealed. And if it is some way sealed I don't think this is as composable as advertised. What happened to the concept of paper cups?
@lindsaychurch8749
@lindsaychurch8749 23 күн бұрын
I assume they're trying to replace plastic and paper altogether. But I don't pretend to know anything about 3d printers. But The materials would have to be incredibly cheap to obtain, cheaper than paper and plastic. And the energy needed to mass produce these cups would have to be decent enough to make the prices not go sky high.
@ufffd

i don’t know what you mean by “on the go”, i assumed they’re bulk printing and firing them and the coffee shop gets pallets and then probably upcharges for them
@mapl3mage
@mapl3mage 16 күн бұрын
the term "paper" cup is misleading because it's partially made of plastic, which is what actually holds the liquid. from what i read, when you drink a hot beverage, the plastic film inside the cup degrades over time, releasing microplastics into your drink.

That's not greener. The amount of energy to make a clay cup is many times greater than paper. Once you factor in the customers who throw away the clay cup after just a single use, it will equal at least a dozen paper cups or more per average.

@lindsaychurch8749
@lindsaychurch8749 23 күн бұрын
Well they're trying to replace plastic altogether, but I doubt it's a suitable replacement for paper cups. Either way, they're thinking in the right direction as far as using less wasteful products. And I wouldn't know about the energy consumption of 3d printers, that might make the product prices go up even more.

It's also worth noting that this experiment could not have happened without the liberty to explore new possibilities.
