I know this is a older video now but I was curious how would one go about starting a project like this? Not sure what I am looking to do is a zoo but more of an educational center. I live in NC and most of the reptile education groups are small rescues but they are spread out and none really in the immediate area of NC where I am located. I currently take care of two iguanas and plans to get more reptiles in the future (once I work out a better job and funds to properly care for more). I strive to not only learn as much and teach other as much as I can about reptiles but to show others that it's more to keeping them then just a giant box or a small box with a few things thrown in.My iguanas are both kept in bio active enclosures, very few fake plants and as naturalistic as I possibly can manage with my current budget. On top of this I have been working with the older of the two for both word and signal training. Something that is enriching to me as the handler and helps better watch and keep control of the animal if others are around so the animal still knows and feels safe. Thus far it's been an amazing experience to 'train' ( a term I use loosely with reptiles) and watch just how intelligent these amazing creatures are.

we started with three of us working together by combining our collections and doing local birthday parties and small community events for free. Once we got our 501c3 non profit status we started charging for our shows so we can start to raise some money for the future zoo. I would say to try to find like minded people, grow your collection and start getting out there. It can be a long hard road. Reptile adventures has been around for almost ten years and we are finally getting close to a zoo.

I'm trying to research Caiman Lizards but I keep running into a problem when it comes to their diet. I know they live on a diet of mostly snails but I can't seem to find any articles going into specifics about how much to feed or how often they are fed. Any help with this is appreciated!

James Pogue most ppl feed their caiman lizards about every day, as much as they want to eat in one sitting during their first 12-18 months. After that They slow down and should be fed about 3 times a week. But in fall and early winter they do slow down even more and tend to only eat once a week.

Hey I have recently acquired a caiman lizard he refuses to hand feed and is very aggressive when approached I have given him ample time to settle into his enclosure and I have a hard time even being near him without him hissing or tail whipping, do you have any tips in dealing with a larger aggressive caiman lizard and how to help calm him down?

i would just keep holding him almost every day for roughly 20- 30 minutes even if he doesn't like it at first. he may freak out the first few minutes then they tend to calm down. he still will be on edge but you want to show him that when he is held he isn't getting hurt. offer food at the end of the handling session and if he doesn't want it then leave it in his cage then try this all over again the next day. if he stops eating then don't handle him until he is eating again. He will slowly recognize that when he is held by you he gets food. he will associate getting held as a positive experience. this can take several months to see improvement so you must stay consistent. I hope that helps
