Pump Head Loss Measurement-
How to measure how much flow is in the tank. Very important to understand head pressure as what is advertised for the GPH measured right from the pump, with no pressure.
www.aquarium-pond-answers.com...
Please know, filters will lots of media will dramatically reduce flow. This specially is true for Canister Filters, HOB with media, Intakes with sponges. etc.
Pumps placed below the aquarium will also affect GPH. Many pump will note GPH at a certain distance.
Different pumps are better to handle Head Pressure at the same watts, simply by design. Some operate very poorly when pressure is added.
Combined Suggested Aquarium Turnover Rates (per hours):
Fresh
5 times for an average non-planted freshwater aquarium
2-5 times for an average planted freshwater aquarium
2-3 times Betta or Fish Fry Grow-Out aquariums
6-10 times for high bio load aquarium such as a "Monster Fish" aquarium- Also for packed planted aquarium for algae control.
Resource for Freshwater Basics
www.americanaquariumproducts....
Marine
8-10 times for an average fish only aquarium
10-12 times for an average FOWLR or very basic reef tank (FOWLR = Fish only with live rock)
14-20 times for an Advanced Reef Tank
With Acropora and Montipora coral, which are often at the top of the reef, these can require as high as 40-50 times per hour combined circulation!
DO NOT make the incorrect assumption that the wave activity at the top of the reef means corals, anemones, etc that live in more protected areas of the reef need the same flow rates as Acropora and Montipora corals.

+American Aquarium (Carl Strohmeyer) most definitely man. You will be a great resource as I have been in the fish hobby for a bit over a yr and have already got into custom filtration for a few months now, but stuff like this is always something you have to mess with to get things right. Thanks again!

Great video demo, Question, some fluval FX6 owners think because their canisters are highly pressurized that it doesn't have any head pressure loss? They say you can put a FX6 in the basement & pump to 2nd floor without head loss. This isn't true is it?

+Michael Piccirillo thanks! The FX6 just like any canister will loose head pressure. Their own publications show that. I think what people are referring too is how the canister filter is a closed loop with a siphon, so once water is in the lines, it should have minimal decrease in head pressure say at 4 feet vs two stories. But this would be true with any canister as it create the siphon with water coming down. If you haven't check out this article, it goes over this concept more. www.aquarium-pond-answers.com/2011/09/head-pressure-in-aquarium-and-pond.html

Well, based on video, 500 gph will be chopped in half to 250 gph. 8-10 turnover rate is great if you have larger fish or way over stocked :-)

I need help!!! If it takes 75.36 seconds to fill 1 gallon of water, how many gallons per hour is that?!?!?
@carlstrohmeyer
@carlstrohmeyer 5 жыл бұрын
60 divided by 75 = .8 x 60 (minutes in an hour) = 48 GPH

Word. So it's 60 divided by (The amount of seconds it takes you to fill a 1 gallon container) then multiply by 60.

This unfortunately isn't accurate. 1 you're creating overhead. 2 you're creating a siphon. At the end of the day, the number doesn't matter. The effect of the flow in the aquarium is what matters.

Actually this is quite accurate, especially when we consider we are not trying to build rocket ships, only approximate flow rates for aspect such as UV Sterilization. I and other professionals have been using such methods for decades
