The West and Russia have been grappling with rising prices since the war in Ukraine and the onset of sanctions. But just how severe is the situation? I've analyzed food inflation at my local grocery store in Moscow and matched it against the official data to uncover the real impact. Tune in to find out more!

The key sector of society is those who rely on the state pension as if the c. $250/month pre invasion will be buying a lot less now if the Kremlin have not inflated the pensions - a big problem as pensioners buy food and heating.

I’m from Ecuador 🇪🇨, our stupid president almost got us in big economic trouble (bigger), he wanted to get a deal with USA for 200 million in aid ( only 1 time paiment) for selling them Soviet military equipment to be send to Ukraine, failing to comply with the Russian purchase contract, including seeking a form of donation to evade the obligations of the contract. Russia declared the country an enemy and vetoed banana imports, causing losses of 800 million a year, and could rise to 1 billion if applied to other goods. The losses would be immense. We don’t need to be part of anything in that war. Is not our business.

I work as a welder in the province. At the beginning of 2022, my salary was 75 thousand rubles, today I get 125-130 thousand. The shortage of labor forces companies to raise salaries in order to retain employees. 20 years ago, companies didn't hold on to people and said if you don't like something, then leave, there's a queue for your place. I had to settle for a 46-hour work week and a "dirty" salary (in cash). Today everything is within the framework of the labor code, I get a "white" salary, I work exactly 40 hours a week, fully paid 4 weeks of vacation per year and sick leave. .Employers from whom I quit 5-10 years ago due to poor conditions or disrespect for my rights, call me and offer to work for them again on much better terms. Of course I refused, but it was nice 😂 If we talk about the negative changes from the sanctions, the only thing I regret is the exodus of Western car brands and Ikea. Especially cars😔 Now we have a choice in the automotive market only between Lada and Chinese brands at a price 2 times higher than in China.Otherwise, nothing bad happened. I hope the automatic translation is correct.

In Australia, since the start of the war in Ukraine, our prices have doubled on most things. Petrol used to be $1.30. Now it's$2.30. Meat is $30 kg. Fish $40 kg . Vegetables $10 kg. im also an Aussie, our government is 100% foolish by ignoring our own national interest and pander to US led anti China alliance. China is our biggest source of supplier for most goods, and they are also our biggest customer. Chinese ethnic migratants and students are also a huge boost to our population growth and provided a high quality source of our new citizenships in Australia (just look at amount of Chinese ethnic researchers and productive white collar workers). Australia did this to ourselves by ignoring our own national interest. We should have mimicked what Singapore has done, becoming a reliable 'middle-man' between US and China, keep good relation with both, and act as a helpful force for the stability of the region, calm the nerves of US-China competition, but no, we are just a pawn in US's chess table now.

But gasoline 95 costs AUD 0.66 here. Here in Sweden before the sanctions 1 egg cost in Rubles 12,67 and now 29.56. Butter 500gr 337,85 now 506.67. And these are Swedish products. I follow Travelling with Russel and he shows a lot of different stores. He says that prices have gone up, we can also see that if we look at older videos and then the newer ones, but not that much and for example fruit, vegetable prices depends on season. And there has never been any shortage of anything that I guess the West were hoping for with the sanctions.

That's really bad 😨. Not so bad here but some products are way over 100% more expencive. Like cucumber and potatoes. I belive we had higher prices in Sweden than Us before the sanctions and I guess they couldn't raise them more than they did becuase people would have been outraged. The reason can't be the sanctions but they blame it on that. The CEO if the largest chain, ICA, treated herself with a bonus in 2023 and it was 1,735000 USD. This is their way of either straving us or forcing us to eat their bugs and labmade meat because that food will probably be way more cheap.

Meanwhile we had a 19% inflation in two years on food alone here in France. People can hardly find jobs which makes it NOT easyer to buy food (5.5 million unenployed out of 70) and poverty grows stronger every year. Also salaries are stagnating for decades with only the minimum wage being slightly increased for inflation, meanwhile energy prices exploded because of EU schemes and then they blamed it on Russia (we barely use gas exept in the industry).

I'm Canadian, but have been living in China for 8 years. I spent most of last year in Canada, and was shocked by how much food costs. Grocery costs have at least doubled in the region (Northern Quebec, fairly distant from big cities like Montreal). Meanwhile in China, local products (the majority of products are obviously local) have seen surprisingly little inflation. At the local market, everyday stuff like meat and vegetables haven't increased by more than 10% over the last 4-5 years.

For example, as a student, I was offered a salary of 30-40 thousand rubles. This is enough for me to live independently and eat well. I want to emphasize that I am a student and I do not yet have any real job experience. Regarding the increase or decrease in prices, I believe that there is no reason to be ashamed. Watching from Ukraine, I would say that we probably have the same changes, all products have gone up in price by 20-40% in the national currency, some import products up to 50% and even more, if we calculate prices in the US dollars, most of the products remained at the same level, since the national currency dropped from 27-28 UAH per 1$ to 40 UAH per 1$. Let's say 1L of milk was 27 UAH in 2022, and now it's 40 UAH, now and then it is 1$. But frankly, it is a sensitive difference for us, the average wage is about 400-500$ in cities and towns. In the countryside 200-300$. Minimal wage is 200$. Peace to everyone, this is the most important.

It is important what other food you can buy with this money. I think for $150 it won't be the highest quality food...

@@user-fr8op9hf7rit’s about $250/wk now and it’s nothing but fruits, vegs, meat, eggs, cheese, milk, yogurts, beans, rice, potatoes. We eat very, very little processed foods. We have taco Tuesday (some sort of Mexican fare), Wednesdays we grill, Thursdays are breakfast for dinner, pizza Fridays, Saturdays we usually grill again, Sunday is normally a roast or chicken in the crockpot, Monday we typically clean out the fridge, have leftovers or hoagies. This is a typical week - I have a child with autism so having a routine with food is important for her (and has made my life easier with planning meals), that’s how its been easy to see my food bill has risen so much bc I generally purchase the same brands as well. I’ve stopped purchasing a lot of breakfast cereals because we now purchase eggs from a friend with a farm - hopefully our meat expenditure will go down because we will start purchasing half a cow every 6-12 months from them and we can plan our meals around that. Until then we get grass fed, antibiotic free meats. We do eat a bit of fish and shrimp bc we are on the coast and can catch it and eat it same day. My kids know how to make eggs, so we have cut out breakfast cereals bc an avg of $4-6/box that’s shrinking ounce wise is robbery. Right now we enjoy making breakfast burritos; I will scramble eggs and we put them on a tortilla with cheese and salsa. I also purchase block cheese and not the shredded bag stuff. It’s so much better for you. If I can find a way to cut back on a cost, I will. But when I’m purchasing *almost* the exact same things week after week and realizing what $150 got me a year ago as opposed to now just makes me mad lol. I’m glad it’s summer because we did plant a garden! Our garden last year flopped but this year we’ve been blessed with plants already producing. We have squash and tomatoes already giving us produce! We planted ^^, plus zucchini, peppers, cucumbers, watermelon, green beans and peas. We are also giving corn a trial run. We don’t necessarily live in the best region for that but all we can do is try. Again, we are cutting costs where we can and are definitely getting the best foods possible.

@@user-fr8op9hf7rwe eat very healthy … fruits, vegs, meat, rice, potatoes, beans, milk, cheese, yogurt, and eggs. Our menu stays very similar week to week with Taco Tuesday (some kind of Mexican fare), Wednesdays we grill, Thursdays are breakfast for dinner, Pizza Night Fridays, Saturdays vary on season (plus sports), Sundays are big family dinners normally with a roast or whole chicken in the crockpot, and Mondays are always leftovers. I have a child with autism and between allergies and sensory issues it’s been the easiest way to minimize meltdowns and food anxiety. I’ve been purchasing the same items since 2019 when I decided to simplify life and the prices of food have steadily increased while sizes have gotten smaller, so not only are we purchasing less per ounce, we are also paying MORE for those smaller sizes. To help cut costs, we have planted a garden which has already started producing tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash. We have zucchini, peas, green beans, and watermelon planted. I don’t purchase eggs from the store - we have a friend with a farm that brings us two (sometimes 3) dozen per week. I’ve also stopped purchasing cereals. They’re very expensive for such a low nutritional yield. I normally skate by with spending approximately $250. Sometimes it’s more as it depends on if I’m having to replace staples or seasonings. Kids are about to be done with school so the bill will go up the next two months while I’m feeding them everything - their school district serves all students free meals, so they eat quite a bit at school rn. My $250/wk for 6 people equates to roughly $5.95/daily for my family’s food and that’s not tooooo bad. I know many families whose bill is considerably larger and do not eat as healthily as we do - all of the processed food is technically more expensive. I avoid it as much as possible.

Cost of housing has also completely soared. Wages crept up a few dollars but not nearly enough to cover the extra cost of living. Russia is dong better than most of the west, Russia's GDP has also been better than ours and they've had less inflation overall. The sanctions are hurting Europe more than Russia. Russia has also created brics. become close with China, and undermined the USD as the world currancy. The west has been too arrogant to accept that their plans are not working and are backfiring.

Более того, порой есть совершенно бессмысленные траты ( месяца два назад питался только готовой едой из различных пиццерий или других фастфудов и всё с доставкой), а иногда наоборот приходилось так сказать затянуть пояс и поэкономить. Im from Germany and I can’t complain about the food prices. Yes they went up but if you look around in Europe we have by far the lowest food prices compared to income. For example the average net salary is about 2000€ (200.000 roubles) but the milk costs the same (it varies from like 0,75 - 1,5€). However if you want to buy organic meat (real meat, no aldi crap) you will pay more than 35€ a kg of beef. Also our housing market is one of the most expensive ones in the western countries. Below 50% of our population own their home. Considering we are one of the „richest“ countries in the world, this is really bad.

Yes, because EU favors Germany and forces all of us from the South and East, that have far lower wages, to pay for energy on the so called "Common Market", basically we pay the same insanely high prices as rich countries do, but we're poor! So by having a "Common Energy Market" instead of a National Market, we are basically subsidizing Rich Countries and their economies that already dominate the EU internal market and crush our less competitive industries and economies. Serbia. My grocery bill has doubled in 2 years. The cheapest shopping times are when I get a variety fresh produce at street markets: May-October. The most expensive time is winter when I largely rely on the supermarket. One thing to note is that while prices of some goods have remained relatively stable, their quality has gone down. I noticed this with packaged foods, like butter, because it is easier for them to change the formula. Packages gotten smaller and old vegetables are being kept on the shelves. There have been no eggs on the shelves at my closest supermarket for 3 weeks.

I am writing from Slovakia - when it comes to groceries the increase was around 30-40% when it comes to food. To compare - the cost for a liter of milk was around or slightly below 1€ now it is around 1,40€, Snickers was 50 cents, now it is 85-90 cents. Services have gone up more, a dinner at an average restaurant was around 10€ now it is around 17-20€. It has more to do with the rising energy prices, for the population it is regulated but businesses have to pay the (spot)market price which is anywhere from 2-3x higher than it was before. Salaries have risen, but not as much as the inflation.

Eggs are also bit more expensive, but sometimes discounts bring them back to old prices. The egg shortage basically happened for the same reason as toilet paper shortages when Covid started: 1. People get scared a product will be out of stock based on a rumor/misinformation. 2. People buy slightly more of said product. 3. Because supermarket supply chains are optimized to keep minimal inventory at the distribution center (see Vendor Managed Inventory), the product goes out of stock. 4. Shoppers panic even more producing the Forrester effect (aka Bullwhip effect) that disrupts supply and demand, and it takes some time to correct.

Before the war, I spent around 2000 rubles for grocery each weak, now that same bill is around 2500. The point here is that I make an advantage of better currency rate, before the the war 1 USD = 60 rubles, now 1 USD = 90 rubles. Food went up 25-35%, insurance for cars went up 25%, gas prices went up from $1.30/l to $1.60/l. Income across the country however remains pretty much the same (the increase is in single digits).

Food has increased much more than that in Canada as well and we aren’t under any sanctions. Unless you call our government a form a sanction in itself. It’s gotten to the point where buying beef is a luxury I can barely afford anymore. It makes me wonder if there is a concerted effort to make beef in particular unaffordable to the masses. It would be interesting to compare these prices to the increase in prices of the same products from around the world.

From 2022, prices doubled in average, and minimun wage is only 400 USD a month, working usually more that 8 hours a day. Salary today is almost the same as it use to be 10 years ago, but prices are incredible high. And in the last 4 months, prices are up more that 50%. So I think the economic situation in Russia is nothing compared with the rest of the world.
