We just found and subscribed to your channel two days ago, but we really like the stage your at with your farm and your thorough comments on trying to work it out. The fact that you’re from Ohio, and so is Elle, is also a fond connection. We learn from those who came before us, and you made reference previously to the regen leaders, but we all have it slightly different and it’s more helpful at our stage hearing the practical from folks working through that which is defined as principle by the elders. So kind and encouraging. Thanks for stopping by and for following along. So much changing all around us everyday, but at times I’m finding the winnowing unexpectedly refreshing - a simplicity buried like treasure, that I must uncover. Much love to those who came before us, and I can’t agree more with the fact that we all have it different - I was just thinking about that today - Different climates, different philosophies, different life experiences…but we’re all trying to make it work on what feels like the edge. We just picked up some bottle calves and one of them is scouring. I'm constantly monitoring her just waiting for the normal poop to arrive, so I got a chuckle to see you get excited to see poop because I'm pretty sure I'll react the same. Wife wanted to try something herbal also. Thanks for your perspective, puts me a bit more at ease knowing that nearly everyone with calves deals with scours, unfortunately.

It’s amazing how the farm changes your perspective on things. We’ll be driving down the interstate, and I’ll have thoughts like, “Why can’t somebody graze or make hay out of all this grass along the roads??” Yeah, scours is common. We’ve had really good luck with the Molly’s Herbals for both sheep and cattle, but I can also understand the desire to treat with something more official, especially if a calf is under 30 days old. Young farmer here, I hope you guys can get back to me on this one question I’m dealing with the same you were going through with your baby calf. I have him on some electrolytes and a salt brick. He seems to be doing fine but is still passing the bloody Diarrhea

I’m certainly no vet, so this is not veterinary advice. I do know the electrolytes are crucial. If he’s under a couple weeks old, I’d keep a very, very, very close eye. Here are some initial questions to think thru: Is mamma making enough milk? How’s the quality of her feed? Are you taking regular weights on the calf to know if he’s still gaining daily? Best advice I can give is don’t be afraid the get the vet there if he is not improving. Hope all goes well.

Keep your pens clean, lots of air movement, keep the calf from accessing puddles, We saved an incredible breakout of scours with Baking Soda, sugar and salt in 4 pints of warm water... We had to treat 20 calves for 3 days...with no losses. Tremendous amount of work as the calves were nearing 160 lbs. The field looked like there had been 200 people, having a water balloon fight with yellow paint inside... there was a point we thought we were going to lose everything.

What are the quantities of the Baking Soda, sugar and salt?

We did 4 heaping tablespoon of each. Salt, Baking Soda, and Sugar in 4 pints of warm water. Just baking soda works too. Once your calves are stumbling or not getting up...they need a Vet to give IV drip. And in most cases you're not going to succeed. The ONLY reason we had a chance is that the calves were over 200 lbs and had some reserves. Tubing calves that are sick but are strong enough to lift me up, is not a fun job.

@@birchfieldfarming awesome I just fed my bottle calf some Gatorade. He’s been rough lately but today he’s looking decent. I know he needs electrolytes though
