Can I Save Our Calf Peanut?

Can I save our calf Peanut? She has fallen ill. Symptoms include a bloated stomach and laying on her side with her head down while kicking her back legs. At first, I suspected parasites as the most likely cause and treated her accordingly. But as I thought about it more and did a little research, I understood there's something different wrong with her...

Awe, I’ve been worried about Peanut, because I’m a Mom, and moms worry about orphans. But, its obvious she is definitely in good hands. 💖

Hi Rachel, being empathetic is very important when raising animals! I have a particular affection for Peanut too because of what happened to her Mom and having to make it on her own.

As a non farmer I am fascinated by all the in's and out's of a farmers life and just how much you need to know. Its always an education to watch you with your slow calm voice, I think you missed your calling as a teacher as I think you would have been good for the kids. The way that you explain things leave us "the school kids" waiting on every word that you say. Thank you Pete for allowing an old man feel like a school kid again (its been many years). As always thanks for posting

As a one time vet tech, I appreciate a refresher and extension on cattle digestion. It would make sense that over time a calf would develop the gut bacteria to handle their ultimate fiber diet. Same sort of reason why you can't feed human babies honey. Interesting video as always, Pete. Good work as always too! :)

Fascinating! As a Dexter owner I really appreciate the deeper dive into how cows work. Not at all a dry presentation. I watch your videos with the goal of learning something new or being reminded of things I’ve forgotten. And even a bad joke or two… I’m very pleased that Peanut is doing better and has a good prognosis. You and Hillary are a good model of how animal husbandry can be done.

Thank you for the great explanation of a ruminant's digestive system. We have goats for milk and meat and my children (ages 14 and down) have been asking all kinds of questions about the four chambers and the digestion process. I'll have them all watch this video so they can see for themselves, and next time we have a goat to process they'll be able to see how it all looks in real life. Thank you, Pete! P.S. The children also LOVE your dad jokes! They always repeat them to anyone who will listen!

You did the right thing with Peanut, it looks like she just has an underdeveloped digestive system, to me. Had one that did the same thing, last year, we had to tube one years ago just to get the milk down into it's stomach. Great explanation, liked this video, thanks for sharing. Have a good week.

Thanks, once again Pete. Though I worked on a dairy farm as a teen I never had the educational side at that time. I did all the usual "heavy lifting) of cleaning up the bar (think cow poop) and shoveling of the silage to feed them. We had about 160 milking cows. I say "we", it was a private school with about 600 boys and 500 girls ( at another location) to feed. We traded raw milk to Hood in exchange for homogenized milk, cream, butter and ice cream. I loved the work on the farm and it helped to develop my love of animals as well as developing a stron body for myself. Jim R.

Worked at a dairy farm my self at a boarding school. We milked 300 cows though. Manager was anal about cleaning up the cow before attaching the machine. That milk would rot before it spoiled. Grew up drinking raw milk because of that.

That is a pretty big explanation Pete. I love it when you talk in-depth about farm life. When I raised bottle calves, we would introduce the calf starter grain around 2 weeks. We would start with a couple of handfuls at a time and put it in there mouth. Buy the time they were 1 month old, they would actually be eating by themselves. The reason why we did this was so we could wean them at 2 months.

Very interesting. We raise goats and sheep. Occasionally we'll have one with digestive issues that needs treatment. One of the things we do is a cud transfer. We find a healthy donor goat or sheep chewing cud and actually physically reach in and grab as much of the cud as we can, watching those back teeth and trying to keep all our fingers. We then puree that cud in a blender with some molasses and a bit of feed and water and then drench that into the goat with digestive issues. It usually works in just a few hours to a day. The digestive juices in the good cud help renew those in the goat or sheep having issues. I wonder if similar can be done to help a calf that hasn't developed all it needs in it's digestive system to give it a jump start to be able to get enough nutrients from it's food? We have just gotten out first meat steer and Dexter cow & bull, so we have lots to learn. I appreciate all the info you share. Thanks
