Terry’s Live Steam, O, G, Real Trains, & Cobi!

Күн бұрын

The Alyth railroad yard in Calgary, Alberta, Canada is large. It is where huge trains are sorted that go South to the United States or North to Edmonton, but mostly that go West toward the Pacific Ocean and East toward the Atlantic Ocean. We see a glimpse of one such train being put together. We also see an engine move. It’s fun to see some old CP Rail liveries as well.
Locos are also repaired and maintained here. They have quite a large engine shed.
Seen in the video are dozens of engines, sometimes rows deep. Seen are GP38, SD40-2, AC4400, GP60 and other loco types.
As I awaited the train a few Calgary Transit LRT electric trains passed. These are Siemens built units that collect power via overhead catenary.
Cheers,
Terry

Hope CP Rail brings back those SD40s and the GP38-2s that are stored

It would be nice if they did, but I think they are there for spares.

Lol. Well, train spotting the British way has never been a thing in Canada. The continent is too big. Traditionally - especially in steam days - some types of engines only operated in the prairies, Atlantic Canada, the Rocky Mountain and Cascades passes, and the West Coast. All built for the conditions. Today, with hundreds of engines you’d never get them all in your notebook as they travel the whole system across Canada and CP’s trackage in the United States. Tens of thousands of miles. Here it was traditionally a thing to try and see as many types as possible. Even then the vast majority of people would never see them all.

I have lived in Calgary for 40+ years. Alytth Yard follows Ogden Road for a fair distance. Those without wheels can take Calgary Transit Route 24 (Ogden:), which travels parallel to the tracks, The best action is between Blackfoot Trail, which overlooks a good part of the yard, and 50 Ave SE. There’s always plenty of action south of Alyth Yard, along Ogden Road (where you will not be trespassing), and mile-long trains going to or coming from the US, about every hour. Around 50 Ave x Ogden Road, a (now mostly disused) CN bridge provides a nice high angle view of the CPKC track below. Further south on Ogden Rd, is the CPKC Headquarters at the Ogden Shops. There is also action on the other side of the yard by Alyth Road), but it offers a bit more restriction (and also home for the CPKC police, which has the power of arrest)

Thanks for the tips! I’ll check out some of the locations you mentioned - but I didn’t know about - next time I’m in Calgary.

The GP38 in the dead line with the faded paint looks like it might very well be one of the Delaware and Hudson 7300 class. Too bad that telephone pole was blocking the side of the cab.

Yes. Shame about the pole. This is the info I found on the engine: Built by EMD as Lehigh Valley #323 (1972). Acquired by Delaware & Hudson as part of the Conrail merger (1976) and renumbered to D&H #7323. Acquired by Guilford Transportation (1983). Acquired by CP (1/12/1991). Renumbered to D&H #7310, then to CP #7310.
