Grandmaster Lee Kam Wing’s Northern Mantis Kung-Fu
CRUSHING STEP
One of the most devastatingly effective kung-fu systems ever designed. As legend has it, a well-known fighter was badly defeated. While on the ground, recovering from his wounds, he witnesses the motions of a praying mantis stalking and capturing its food. He studied the motions of this unique insect for many years, duplicating the speed, stealth and timing. Ultimately, he created a system which is said to have made him unbeatable.
Now, for the first time ever, Hong Kong’s Grandmaster Lee Kam Wing brings to the world the moves of the mantis virtually intact and in their original form. Taking you step-by-step through forms and applications, Grandmaster Wing reveals the secrets of the mantis, straight from the source.
Tape One: Crushing Step. This tape reveals the “Crushing Step” (Bomb) form of Mantis Kung-Fu. Grandmaster Wing takes the student through all of the moves from several different angles, then explains all of the various applications of this unique and ingenious training set. Beginners will find this tape highly revealing and easy to follow. Advanced martial artists will find a wealth of knowledge as well as Grandmaster Wing peels away the mysteries of this ancient form.
Approximate running time: 47 min. • MANT01

DESCRIPTION
In the early 2000's, Grandmaster Lee Kam Wing produced a 3 tape series titled "Grandmaster Lee Kam Wing's Northern Mantis Kung-Fu" with the assistance of his disciples Sifu John Cheng and Sifu Jeff Bruflat. The tapes were sold worldwide and have since been out of print. The decline of VHS has also made these tapes a rare piece to anyone's Mantis collection.
Tape 1: Crushing Step [Beginner]
• Grandmaster Lee Kam Wi...
Suited for beginners, tape 1 included the Crushing Step form, Praying Mantis theory, and training exercises to help any enthusiast begin their Mantis journey.
Tape 2: Big Wheel Fist & Black Tiger Intercepting Fist [Intermediate]
• Grandmaster Lee Kam Wi...
Suited for intermediate practitioners, tape 2 included the Big Wheel Fist form, Black Tiger Intercepting Fist form, applications of techniques, as well as warm-up and training exercises.
Tape 3: Peach Flower Fist [Advanced]
• Grandmaster Lee Kam Wi...
Designed for advanced practitioners featuring the 2-person fighting form Peach Flower Fist.
[BONUS]: 14 Roads
• Grandmaster Lee Kam Wi...
In 2021, Sifu Dong Thai, closed-door disciple of Sifu John Cheng, archived these tapes to digital format with the help of student Ray Chao who originally converted these tapes to DVD format. During the conversion to ProRes 422 (archive codec), the image was deinterlaced, color-corrected, audio leveled, and subtitles added.
With permission from Grandmaster John Cheng, we have published all 3 tapes on KZfaq to help promote and preserve the art of Praying Mantis Kung Fu.

I have studied 7 star mantis for years. I have also studied the five animal styles. As the years flew by, I learned Japanese jujitsu as well as judo , as well other martial sciences. I also boxed. I am still learning and seeking new martial sciences. After 45 years studying martial arts, I still consider myself a student.

Dear Sifu & close relations, please accept my sincere condolences for the passing of your beloved Sifu Cheng. My Heartfelt Sympathy to all who knew him and were close to him. I feel somewhat embarrassed to say I didn't know it concerned him specifically until I read the message below and started searching for news feed. International news isn't that thorough here, so I'm sorry for responding late. Eventhough I only knew him from the videos and not in real life through education, I felt (and still feel) absolutely gutted and shocked hearing about his passing. I wish all who were close to him all the Love and Strength needed to overcome this loss, and a full and speedy recovery / processing of this grief. Please be well, and may training give you the tools to find constructive distraction and channeling of emotions in order to give his passing (but above all his Legacy) a place in your life and heart. Yours sincerely

There seems to be a difference between what kung fu movies show as mantis and what the traditional form is as seen here, is movie mantis just that, or is there some actual moves that are derived from actually combat?

I believe that self-defence applications such as the material that you see in these videos are the simplified moves of what you see in movies.Choreography in movies is always embelished to make it look more appealing to the audience.Same goes for modern wushu vs self-defence: the first is for points / the ring / show, and the latter is for the street / self- development. But the foundation , to my knowledge , remains the same.

Bruce Lee possibly couldn´t have done forms/drills such as the one in the backyard footage without this art (assuming he trained it because it looks similar to some of his movements that I couldn´t figure out yet, that he wasn´t just making up out of nowhere). I think Dan Inosanto talked about Lee making him train it for a time. Also, what´s up with these "Balls" in Bruce´s forms and drills?!
@camartialarts
@camartialarts 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure if Bruce Lee trained in Praying Mantis but he did write about our style in his journal. Wouldn't be surprised if he picked up a few PM sets as many practitioners in Hong Kong trained with one another. Most of his Kung Fu skill is from Wing Chun which shares many similarities. No clue about the "balls".

@bakhok The confusion is caused by Front and Reverse Angle being shown mixed. Perhaps don't give up too soon trying to master what you like. Try this and see if it works: -Front Angle - Section 1: 22:20 ; Section 2: 23:48; Section 3: 24:07; Section 4: 25:10. -Reverse Angle - Section 1: 22:57; Section 2: 23:26; Section 3: 24:33; Section 4: 24:56. If this is still too fast for you, select "Settings" under the video screen and slow down the video play speed to 0,25 so you can follow along. Good luck & enjoy
