Josephine and Napoleon actually remained very close friends after their divorce. She actually agreed with him on the divorce, knowing he wanted an heir. He made sure she lived in the same luxery as before, and the two remained very good friends until her death. And the reason Napoleon wasn't simply killed, is simple. He'd become a Martyr. If they just simply killed him, the French would obviously know of this. And his supporters would be furious, and who knows? Maybe someone even worse would rise to avenge the fallen Emperor I'm also pretty sure the other powers actually respected Napoleon quite a bit, so I'd imagine they also didn't want to simply kill him

Also forgot that killing a European monarch would make the precedent to kill other monarchs So after you kill France’s monarch Possibly a revolution happens in many other monarch countries like Austria and Prussia Or in war whenever a country loses The European monarch on the losing team is executed Now if you’re a European monarch you don’t want to be executed because you either lost a war or because of a revolution

"Fun" fact: Napoleon crossed Berezina near the village called Studienka, which literally can be translated as "freezing cold" (adjective студёный (studyony) is specifically used to describe freezing cold water). As a result many French soldiers died of hypothermia during the crossing, including all of the engeneers of Napoleon's army, who were building pontoon bridges over Berezina.

The main reason that Napoleon kept getting exiled was his popularity in France. If the British decided to execute him, he would effectively become a martyr. The French soldiers fought for him during his return from Elba, so how would they react if their emperor was executed by a foreign government? Napoleon may have been a controversial figure, but to many French, he was an emperor, their emperor

Not to mention, monarchs simply cover their own backs. It’s basically just an unwritten rule. Look how Napoleon spared the opposing monarch every single time they surrendered. It’s just how it is; they all know that if they become known as the king who kills other kings, then they’ll be executed as soon as they’re defeated themselves. Much safer to simply depose them.

Alexander, as a tsar, had to think first of all about the interests of his empire (like Napoleon). Otherwise, he would have been killed by the nobles as his father (Pavel 1) and grandfather (Peter 3). After the signing of the Peace of Tilsit, Napoleon celebrated his victory in France, but Alexander found himself under public oppression. The people wanted revenge.

A spanish poet wrote about Napoleon, I'm gonna translate it so you can understand the message, but it's obviously not gonna rhyme and it won't have that artistic touch. "Oda al dos de Mayo" "That genius of ambition that in his deep delirium sensing war, made the world grave of his nation, he wounded the Iberian lion long awaiting to rule Spain; and did not get to perceive, drunk with pride and power, that cannot a slave be, people who know how to die."

There was probably multiple reasons they kept him alive. Number one, it wasn't really a custom to kill enemy monarchies like that. True, it did happen from time to time, but for the most part no. Two, some semblance of respect maybe? Three, they didn't want to martyr him. Clearly France loved him. If they killed him and it made him a martyr, they might never again gain control of the French people as it would cause them to rise up in revenge of their beloved Emperor. Four, humiliation? I mean, for someone like Napoleon, a boring, meaningless existence on a remote island with no power, nothing to do but whither and slowly die is kind of a sad way to go. It must have been humiliating to him. He once ruled over Europe and then had nothing and was forced to live with nothing. So it could be any of those reasons or maybe a combination of them? I mean you'd think it would make more sense to just kill him, but if you consider the possibility that it would make him a martyr, killing him is the last thing you'd want to do.

The main reason Napoleon lost at Waterloo is because he had to wait for the ground to dry which kinda sucks for him but what sucks more was knowing that the rain that stopped him was caused by an indonesian volcano eruption.

Fun fact. Napoleon's belongings on Saint Helena and Elba have been passed around a lot to different places. I live near a Barracks. Called Stonehouse Barracks where they have Napoleons dining chair from ST Helena. I was able to sit in a chair used by the most powerful man in recent history and by the best general Europe has ever seen. It's much less impressive than if I got to sit in his throne buts it's interesting that you could probably eat at a table and not know that it belonged to a great historical figure
