I did a remote tuning session with Dave back when I had an Indian Scout Bobber that only had preload on the rear shocks. Between the adjustment he helped me walk through along with tire pressure changes and handlebar/controls adjustments, it was like riding a new bike and saved me from spending money on shocks I did not need.

I think this guy got no idea wtf he’s taking about . He says he’s “compressing “the spring , the only think that changes the compression of the spring is the weight of the bike and rider on it . By adjusting pre load you are only adjusting the ride height by extending or retracing the shock . If you were compressing the spring the bike would be LOWER . You can’t adjust the tension of the spring ! He says ride will get stiffer if it’s got more pre load but ride should be softer, it’s up higher in compression stroke where the valving is lighter . 🤷‍♂️ I have no idea how you could be a suspension tuner and have no grasp on this concept …

most OEM componets the rebound has an effect on compression as well......am sure the top tier suspension companies have isolated this better or completely but i know my older bikes worked this way. ( think my ohlins TTX had them isolated pretty well )....i love suspension and not a tuner just a fiddler......ever since i tuned mine to perfection " on accident" b4 a race i been fascinated ever since......he seems way too heavy for stock spring especilly if he is faster rider......new shock in the horizon with stiffer spring.......suspension is such a fickle thing but so beautiful when you get it dialed......

Wheel travel at rear is 130 mm so rider sag of 26 mm (your starting point) is only 20 %. I would have left it as is and certainly not added preload.
@paulh9301
@paulh9301 3 жыл бұрын
He's bottoming the shock though. I'll choose to add preload too rather than running out of travel at this point. The true answer is aftermarket shock with correct spring rate.
@Bunter1815
@Bunter1815 3 жыл бұрын
@@paulh9301 the tuner says he can bottom the shock by hand which is very surprising and something the video misses. It's confused also by making damping adjustments at the same time. It's after increasing the damping (maybe it does both compression and rebound like he says) that he says he can no longer bottom by hand. I always set the sag first
@identiticrisis
@identiticrisis 3 жыл бұрын
@@Bunter1815 That's exactly what happened. Preload was set for sag first. Dave added rebound damping because he was expecting to need it after that change. He did explain it's because it'll be closer to topping out so he's trying to slow it down. The damping adjuster, like other cheap Sachs units, is combined for rebound and compression. So they only wanted extra rebound but got extra compression with it. Hence backing it out again once the tyre showed the compression was too stiff. But the result was still balanced front-to-rear in rebound, so no problem.
@TheAlphaGinger
@TheAlphaGinger 2 жыл бұрын
So if say you are a lighter rider, say 180lbs, and have not compressed the spring and damper through wear as much, would you still likely need to adjust the rebound on the rear to avoid the double/triple bounce? Has Aprilia set up the RS deliberately soft from factory (meaning high rebound, as Dave talks about "dialing it back" meaning reducing the rebound?). Many reviews of the bike mention the rear shock as the bikes weakest link, just wondering if this is because of the setting and has the setting been a contributing factor to the bearing play (AP Workshops review). Any other owners experienced the bearing play/wear in the shock? Appreciate help, expect my RS660 some time soon and I'm a complete novice on the mechanical front.

@samanthagregoryurich4167
@samanthagregoryurich4167 20 күн бұрын
Sounds like it would be fine since you are 40 lbs lighter and they got it set up fine. Bear in mind manufacturers can’t build a bike that has unlimited adjustability and optimized performance as those design goals counteract each other. This bike is definitely biased towards performance over adjustability. They try to find the sweet spot and design both the suspension and rider triangle for the average rider’s size and weight with some range of adjustability on both sides. I have the RS 660 and it’s such a great bike that I wouldn’t think twice about spending a couple hundred dollars on a spring.

@@dry509 I've seen bigger guys on the track with the RS 660 without mods so even on the track it would probably be fine up until the intermediate level (usually red group). For the road, no worries. You would be missing out if you don't do track day though! I'm 170 pounds and have been running the stock settings for 8000 km and thought my bike handled perfectly. After 5 track days, I'm going quite a bit faster so getting to the point where I should probably stiffen it up a bit when I'm going to the track. I'm starting to feel some of the things Dave Moss is talking about and I can see it on my tire wear. Still, the bike gives me enough confidence to out-brake more experienced riders so it can't be very far off in adjustment.

Am I the only person here who thinks this guys logic on pre loading a shock is completely wrong ? When you “add preload “ you aren’t compressing the spring “ as he states . You are extending the shock inside of the spring ! Therefor making the bike taller . The spring stays the same as it will only compress by what ever weight is on it . And adding “pre load “ or making ride height taller in rear won’t make it stiffer . It should make it softer if anything as you are now further into the softer part “top” of the suspension stroke where valving etc is softer . He says he’s compressing the speing , that which isn’t possible but if it was he’d be lowering the bike

@@CaliMotoTV 😅 thanks man. I am picking up one of these in a couple of weeks so I will be doing an online session with Dave myself! Can’t wait to get my hands on the bike. How do you find it? I’ve owned loads of litre sports bikes so it will be a big change. All the best from Ireland.👍

Always make me laugh on how much crap people buy to put in their bikes, and don’t replace the shockingly low quality suspention first.
