Do calories matter or are they "stupid"? In this week's 'What the Fitness' I break down a Twitter post made by Dave Asprey who claims that calories are stupid because different foods have a different TEF or Thermic Effect of Food. Pour yourself a tall glass of butter coffee and ask yourself, "What the Fitness?".

I do like using TEF to my advantage though, by eating very lean proteins like shrimp, white fish, egg whites. Eating 400 calories of pure protein, you might just absorb 300 calories worth. Pretty damn cool especially on a cut.

Dude great video Layne! The humor was definitely Next Level and I love the way you guys have been doing the videos lately. Such important information and it does fascinate me that people still want to idealize certain foods. Now obviously there's huge benefits to eating whole foods and higher protein because it's just more satiating, more nutrient dense, and will help you reach your goals faster. But you're absolutely right that some of the benefits are over blown like this situation that you're talking about. Thanks for the content and all the best!

@@everydamndayobesityobsessi3137 Impossible and nutrition don't mix well usually. More than that, impossible and biology don't mix well usually. I'm not going to argue. You're assuming the satiety mechanism is fail safe, research points otherwise. You're assuming a lot of things actually, referring to it as a single mechanism when it's a complex psychobiological system. Even just anecdotally, it's not uncommon that people report continuing to binge far after their physically feel full. Oh, yeah, I suppose it's the carbs fault (and I'm being sarcastic)...anyway, as long as your diet works for you, I'm happy. Stay healthy and happy!
@anthonymarconi761
@anthonymarconi761 3 жыл бұрын
@@everydamndayobesityobsessi3137 I perceived you said the exact opposite: that the satiety systems would necessarily stop healthy people from overeating on butter in a low carb diet model. I am contending that as it is all but fail safe, and as such is not a guarantee people following the diet you mention will indeed stop before reaching a notable caloric surplus. In simpler words: low carb/keto diets are not magic insofar as they would prevent you from getting into a caloric surplus. And neither will they prevent you from accruing fat in said situation.
@anthonymarconi761
@anthonymarconi761 3 жыл бұрын
@@everydamndayobesityobsessi3137 if you say so. Again, using extremes such as "impossible, never, always" etc. is something I try to avoid as much as possible as a biologist. "Too full" doesn't mean anything. Ask anyone who's been on a binge. I'll concede that you can retort "how often do you hear about low carb/keto binges?" and anecdotally I'll have to give this one to you for the sake of integrity. But to be frank, while I thank you for your responses, I'm not interested in discussing low carb/keto diets any further when I feel they are painted as that magic trick that will somehow hack your system into perfect intuitive nutrition. My overall analysis of the nutrition literature as a biochem/cell bio PhD and former clinician has been telling me otherwise for a decent time now (I'm not making an argument of authority here, however I do claim with confidence that I am better equipped to analyze and contextualize a corpus of research than the regular person who thinks they nailed it because they read an abstract from a study that seems to go their way). Again, in the end, what matters is that you find the diet model that works for you and your lifestyle. But none will work for everyone all the time. And in this I did speak in absolute, but I'm confident enough about this statement to do so :-)

Hi Layne, thanks for all the informative and entertaining videos. I am a MD trained in Germany, lifting weights for over 40 years (I know, I am old!) and have followed the industry since I started lifting weights in my teens. I am always a bit confused about some of the conventions. When I went to Med School I was taught that carbs have 4.1- 4.2 Kcal/g and fats have about 9.3 Kcal/g. As for protein: it has 5.3 Kcal/g with a net 4.2 Kcal/g AFTER TEF according to my recollection. Could you please clarify 1. The use of 4, 4, 9 Kcal for the macros (is it just because it is easier?) 2. Is the subtraction of the TEF for protein from 5.3 Kcal or from 4.1 (4.2)? Thanks!

Saw a podcast (w/ Max Lugavere iirc) with him the other day where he said that "Kale is as bad as smoking", while being really silly and not particularly respectful. And he repeated that multiple times in different ways, it wasn't just something he didn't mean. In another podcast (w/ Paul Chek) he said that it's absolutely not true that many biohackers are abusing supplements for shortcuts and avoid doing the basics. I think I'll cut down from 2 podcasts/year with Dave to something closer to none. Love the biohacking stuff, experimentation, biochemistry, some weird stuff, higher fat diets and playing around with supplements, but there are certainly better resources out there. Marketing behind the brand is still fucking nuts.

And most people are going to have a hard time eating 45% protein, especially if they are eating close to maintenance. If you're getting 200 grams of protein (which is a solid amount for most people) that's only 32% of a 2,500 calorie diet. Realistically, you're going to fill out the calories with carbs and/or fats. And if you want to lose weight ... just cut some of the fats and carbs rather than try to generate a small deficit by wasting money buying extra meat just for it to be converted inefficiently into energy.

The high protein diet example you used looks more like a keto diet- any High protein diet I’ve done has been 45g fat and the remaining balance would be carbs - which would mean more than a 120 calorie difference: that’s a lot for women!
