1:12 "Apparently all it takes to eradicate high levels of radiation is a good soapy shower". It depends on the radiation in question. Granted, soap and water won't do anything for the radiation that has penetrated your body, but it is indeed used for cleaning off the non-penetrating radiation that has accumilated on the outside. Alpha radiation for example can only get inside you if you ingest, inhail or inject it, because it cannot penetrate your skin. It is indeed washed off with soapy water.

Bond and Miss Taro both use sex to 'pass the time' so there's a nice symmetry and moral equivalence going on in that scene. She's keeping him occupied until Dent can turn up and kill him. He then keeps her occupied until the police arrive and arrest her. Fair's fair.

Only those who lived through this era can understand how exciting this film was. It was the first time we saw a cruel Connery in all his physical splendour play this superspy, with music that excited, a larger than life villian, a gorgeous Ursula Andress in a bikini - (a swimsuit style that was considered daring at the time), with the introduction of a shadowy world-wide criminal enterprise.The flair of Connery's portrayal, his athletic body dressed in impeccably tailored Bond St. suits (!) along with some beautiful, dangerous exotic women: one can't really understand the impact having grown up in a CGI world where special effects are taken for granted, and British cinema was not hitherto known for panache, but rather studied craft, small- scale, and rather local and parochial productions, notwithstanding their humour, artistry and excellent acting. Bond threw British cinema into the forefront of world attention, giving the Yanks a run for their money in box office, production values, sizzle & pizzazz. You really had to be there, Cal. Honest.

+Alana Ronald Well im on my twenties and grew up with Roger Moore and Connery films just because my father showed them to me and i loved them as a kid. Moore is my favourite bond because of the gadgets and more humorous interpretation of bond. I think you really can appreciate the classic bond films even if you didnt see them originally when they were released. Im actually baffled to see this reviewer not to recommend one of my favourite bond films, definetly in the top 5..
@alanaronald2448 жыл бұрын
+jaws I didn`t phrase my response carefully and specifically enough. I understand ANYONE from any era can appreciate the film itself, but unless you grew up before this techie world, you can`t really appreciate the tenor of the times when spy films, (especially from Britain), were very theatrical in the sense that they could translate fairly easily to stage. The gadgets, the music, the sexuality, the raw sense of danger Connery projected were breath-takingly new, and fit with a cosmic change in society. Bond was in the vanguard of that change. I am not denigrating your ability to enjoy or appreciate these films, but our sensibility has taken a quantum leap. Just remember that it was still considered de rigeur to shoot a bedoom scene between husband and wife on TV with chaste twin beds and an actor must keep one foot on the floor ...I could go on, but I won`t. Bond was revolutionary, Bond was exciting, Bond was the wedge in the Cold War, and Bond helped swing the mindset towards hedonism, relative youth, innovation and cinematic excitement connecting us with modernity, space travel and a seemingly unlimited progress toward the future. The future was NOW|!

I think calling this one Vanilla is a bit harsh. I actually think its better than Goldfinger. Apart from from Russia with Love for me, this is definately the classiest Bond Movie and when i rewatched it the thing i most forgot is how much the Jamaican setting adds to the fun and visual pleasure of this film and pins down what makes Bond so great for worldwide viewers. Mark Kermode said in some random review how for people back in day Bond was great for people who wanted to travel but couldn't and settled for traavelogues in film. I think Dr NO. along with The Spy who Loved Me make the most of that. I can't really break down all the reasons why i love this one into typed points but i think for the mix of entertainment and suspense with just the right restraint, this is one of the best. Also along with the best Bond intro it has the best Villain intro. Not when you see No. But just the way Leiter says his name before the bar scene fades into the next. Its a perfect foreboding, punchline to the whole conversation of intrigue around crab key that's gone before. Top class.

+LeBob93 I agree. Bond is at its best for me when he's actually being a spy in exotic locales and not an exaggerated tux wearing super hero (though that has its place). Dr. No is one of the films to get that right and For Russia With Love simply nails it.

+LeBob93 I completely agree. Dr. No has always been a top 5 Bond film for me. It has a meatier story than normal, the exotic locales were great, and Ursula Andress is fantastic even if she doesn't have much to do. For me, it's just a solid, great start to the series.

Really great review. Dr. No has moments of brilliance- Bond's introduction, Honeys introduction, Dent's death, but I just can't love it like I do for the next three instalments. One thing I do rate more than you though is Miss Taro, I think for such a small role Zena Marshall nailed that role. She was the first real bad Bond girl (ignoring the photographer) and the best until Fiona Volpe. Also from a shallow point of view, she is simply beautiful (more-so than Honey imo!) really underrated.

The wading pool bit was forced upon the makers due to a production mishap. They wanted large crabs to "eat the bond-girl alive", so they found some rather big ones (Japan probably didn't offer shipping king crabs over) and had them shipped to the UK. In order to make that trip alive they were cooled down. Come filming-time even the camera-lighting didn't warm the things up so they were EXTREMELY lethargic/dragging themselves. Unable to afford a rewrite and a new set its implied that incoming flood-water would've drowned Bond's lady-of-the-movie. There are photos taken of the scrapped take with the crabs.

I love Dr. No but it’s nothing in comparison to the other films that came with a real budget. I’ve often wondered if they’d gone back after a few bond films (maybe after Thunderball when they got the style nailed down for the series) and remade Dr. No with a real budget. I found your channel with your newer videos about No Time To Die and all and decided to go back and rewatch all of the recapping of the films. It’s entertaining seeing your older videos and admiring how far you’ve come with the content and production quality etc of your content. Cool that you pointed out the then-recently stolen painting in Dr. No's lair, but I wish you'd mentioned how they repeated the gag in Skyfall in the Shanghi scene where the assassin snipes the guy in the building across the way. The victim is lured into position to privately view a painting as if he's purchasing a stolen work of art, and in fact the painting appears to be Modigliani's "Woman with a Fan", stolen from a Paris Museum in 2010. To be fair about the paddling pool of death, they had attempted to film the scene from the novel where she was being picked to death by crabs, but the crabs were not being cooperative. The 'vents' also made a lot more sense in the novel, being that they were a sadistic maze for the doctor's amusement. But hey, it was a reasonable adaption. Especially the first half.

What the hell is that? Like you truly remarked, the music is so weird in this movie. Like most, if not all Bond soundtracks, there is no complete one issued. A shame from a historical content I suppose. But what of THE James Bond Theme Mr. Full Monty Norman wrote? Is he trying to tell us that the theme we all love is NOT the real James Bond Theme? Had a look at this review again. There's a few of your criticisms to pull apart, and the relationship of the film to the book provides a lot of explanation. At 11:08 you confess that you hadn't read the book, but you have read the book by now, so you will know these things. Honey Rider is essential to the plot in the book because her non-stealthy approach to the island on the same night as Bond and Quarrel starts the events that lead to their capture. Leiter is not a character in the book so Jack Lord is shoehorned into the movie and doesn't have much to do. The villain doesn't appear in person until very late in the book, hence late in the movie also, and Bond's escape through the ventilation system is actually a set-up obstacle course in the book. If you were to review this movie again, knowing how the movie was made to align closely to the book, you would comment differently I think. In my own ranking of Bond films this is my 4th favourite Connery (out of six EON films) and 13th overall (with no ranking for anything from Quantum of Solace onwards because, well, I don't care).
@13thcentury2 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming the cell grille was a left over part of an earlier script. As in the novel (as far as I remember) No allowed Bond to escape in order to put him through a trial or rooms and ordeals. Which probably explains Ryder... as no doubt she is being set up squid food.

I wish they'd left the full "obstacle course" from the novel in. In the novel, the tunnels leading from the vent are equipped with a deadly obstacle course--white-hot metal to crawl over, electric shocks, a cage of tarantulas, and a giant squid in a pool at the end of it all.
@whaterry37942 жыл бұрын
-I've actually been to the on location... locations for this one! The exterior of Dr. No's (Julius, if you will) base is actually an old oil rig that looks exactly the same. The beach they're on has a sick waterfall too. It's been a fat minute since I was there though lol -Also for the "electronic sounds" that's actually what a metal pipe sounds like! If you find an electrical wire or cable and hit it you'll find out two things: 1. it sounds like a laser gun from a Sci-Fi film when hit and 2. Electrocution isn't fun. An easier way to test this is by throwing a rock or something on some ice! -But the electric noises aren't the thing that's annoyed my dad and I for YEARS whenever we watch this film: The Air COnditioning System gets periodically FLOODED. I'm surprised only Bond had wet clothes in that facility!

Here's a question, did Dr No's fashion sense influence Blofeld's or did Blofeld's influence Dr No's?

I fear I must agree that many of the elements in Dr. No suck and that it's Connery's performance of the well-written character interactions which makes Dr. No. I prefer though to not look at Dr. No from the perspective of the Bond formula or as the starting point of a franchise, but from the perspective of just a movie in its own right. Dr. No's strength lies in the plot of the investigation combined with constant revelations who Bond is as a professional and a person as he's investigating. After Dr. No the character is pretty much defined and it is rather accentuated by the style of the actors, than being developed with the exception of Bond in OHMSS, where he's willing to commit.

I think you're close. I believe he said "Shut down. This fool's running wild. Shut down." but he said the first two sentences fast and as almost as one, plus the countdown was going.

I think the film is still fun, despite some outdated tropes and story issues. It's a decent jump off point.

I might have got what Dr.No said at 5:36. "This fool is running amok" "Shut down".

On the Dr No novel, honestly, to me the film makers had little to work with. In the novel, they go to Crab Key far earlier, little time is spent on Jamaica, and Dr No only ever really appears about 3 times in the novel as well. Honey is better developed (and does the famous scene naked!), and when Bond is escaping through the vents, it was actually done on purpose by No as a sadist test for Bond, which he passes unexpectedly. I'd say it is close to the book but adds more than it takes away tbh.
