Yggdrasil ! Reading through Masks of God now, best work on myths and symbols I've ever read. Makes you understand what all the esoteric knowledge is actually about, but they won't spill those secrets as easily and intelligent as Campbell does, such a legend.

I first saw this program in my 20's. I'm now in my 60's. I was so awed by the interaction between Moyers and Campbell that I enrolled in college, then graduate school and became an Anthropologist myself--just like Campbell. I am retired now after 20+ years as an Archaeologist, which I chose as my specialty in Anthropology because I wanted to be able to study the material culture of those who came before us, along with their mythologies that gave their lives meaning. Today, I stand in awe of all of our ancestors, who tamed our wild planet and made human existence worth the telling...

Joseph Campbell was a wonderful teacher of Mythology. He knew when he was a boy of 14 what he wanted to do in life..... and he did it . His whole life was immersed in Mythology throughout the world and his wonderful PBS series with Bill Moyer here called " The Power of Myth " is indelibly imprinted on my brain.Thank you , Joseph Campbell .

Campbell talks of 'this moment being one of eternity' with the interviewer looking in complete bafflement / bewilderment at what is being said to him. Coincidentally Campbell is correct, we are watching this discussion years into the future, and this moment has been captured as a forever-digital ephemeral and archival record.

I don't think that's a look of "complete bafflement / bewilderment", it's a look of awe. If you watch the series, Moyers is constantly blown away by Campbell. In spite of this, he hangs in and asks great question after great question. Moyer's work in this series is a gift to all of us, Joseph Campbell included. With his remarkable skill, he pulls wisdom out of Campbell that would have otherwise never been seen by people like me. This series literally changed the direction of my life.

I didn’t know Black Elk spoke of hoops. I talk about hoops interwoven in my new book about reading the symbols and organization of the universe like the book it is, like the structure of meaning meant to be read by the creator. ❤ He spoke well. I too feared my own self, felt the fear of others in the things I could say or do. I know that feeling. Thanks for posting this. ❤ It’s not insanity to be misunderstood. ❤ To be something surprising or unexpected. Your disbelief and failures should not be projected as another’s insanity. When people cannot understand they fear. They do not understand their own future. What they do not understand and fear they push away, they destroy. Their own weaknesses destroy their own future in their ignorance. What I would like to tell the world is that fear borne of ignorance is a message of your own destruction to your self by that very ignorance and here we have a personal hoop. The feed-back from the external running from internal feelings or issues. All evil comes from the misinterpretation of internal signals. Chaos seeping in and twisting things. The obstacles are never out there, they are within. You are the obstacle to the future of the world in your ignorance. So it’s pretty important that you recognize that. It’s part of why we are here and our real work.

According to my research, and using scientific, theological and philosophical methods, the "hoops" envisioned by this Sioux boy may represent cycles of time. Western Civilization has a tendency to perceive the passing of time in a linear fashion, while Eastern Civilizations perceive the passing of time in circuits. Both concepts can be harmonized by using a lengthy segment of coil spring as a demonstration tool. Civilizations come and go, and life goes in cycles; and what happened to the Sioux Nation is a mere microcosm of what humanity has experienced since the awakening of our earliest progenitors.
