💚 And as always, a huge thank you goes out to The Brotherhood: / brothersmake
We were invited to take part in KZfaq Makers Secret Santa! We decided to test out whether waste PLA from 3D printers can be recycled and turned into new objects. So after attempting a few smaller things, we made a solid infinity gauntlet for 3D Printing Pro - Emily the Engineer. Plus, Ruth and Shawn from Kids Invent Stuff made us a giant ice cream cannon out of an old traffic cone and we shot it at Matt!

I kind of liked the crumbled look of the gauntlet before you reassembled it it looked like a found relic. Maybe if that happens again you can connect the pieces with small rods, leaving a small gap between each piece. That way it looks like it's a frozen moment in time of the gauntlet exploding/crumbling.

Are you familiar with the Japanese concept of Kintsugi? It's where broken pottery is repaired with gold, highlighting the fractures rather than hiding them, embracing flaws and imperfections. I just love the similarities between this practice and your excitement after unmolding and reassembling. You even used gold color in the reassembly process!

Awesome video, love this sort of thing as a 3D printing nerd. For future reference, PLA has a glass transition temperature of around 55 degrees C, so starts going soft around there. Generally making it not always appropriate for practical projects - visual/display stuff is always cool though. PLA is generally printed between 190 and 210 degrees.

Note that PLA tends to degrade horribly during thermal cycles. For decorative molding it won't be a big deal, but for turning back into filament you need to REALLY be careful about it. I can see you even had some issues with it getting brittle, haha. That mica powder really turned out great though! Dr. D-Flo has made some good videos about turning PLA prints back into filament.

These guys made a video about that subject and found it didn't degrade nearly as fast as reported. It's a couple videos before this one.
@BrothersMake

Thanks for this! It would be interesting to test PLA in the same way we tested HDPE in that video. From our short amount of time working with it, it seems to be very sensitive to overheating and becomes very brittle, hence why the gauntlet broke into so many pieces!

i think if i had been molding the glove, it be cool to pour the liquid silicon over the glove, perhaps begin filling it, so the internal is solid, and then pour over the outside, needs a descent base, then you con fill the outer silicon glove with liquid plastic and the slip that over the inner solid silicon mold, wait till cool and peel apart - but still an interesting project - i guess the volume of the original silicon block mold absorbed the heat, deflected it etc to prevent the plastic melting but hey i have learnt that you can reuse plastic waste from 3d printing, cool but i think for some reason i might be more interested in your wonderful shredder, i need something perhaps 2-3 times bigger, i have a mass of fiberglass i need to break down which i want to make into a useable filler paste

harbor freight... $40 should get the large Auger drill bit... get a steel tube with inside diameter just barely larger than the auger... wrap the steel tube with heat tape with thermostat controls on the tube... set bearings on one end with a end plate preventing the pla from getting to the bearings. have an opening in the top of the tube when it is horizontal. establish a hopper over opening... shred your plastic over the hopper,... heat the tube to melting point, chuck drill onto the auger... slowly turn auger in revers to push shredded pla into the tube where it melts and is pushed/extruded out the end of tube into your mold.

If you're curious about recycling PLA filament then give the CNC kitchen a lookie-see. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eLpgZ8qdrKrOcmg.html They've been experimenting with PLA recycling and have one of those expensive devices, but they recently tested a cheap device that seems to work really well also. The biggest issue they've ran into has been old filament absorbing water, and foreign material. Edit: Regarding the mica powder, as long as the grains are smaller than 0.4mm then you're fine. That's the typical printer nozzle size. If you make PLA with anything that's larger than 0.4mm in it, then you can cause a clog.

Thought on the air bubbles in the bigger pieces of plastic melted in the oven - that could be fixed with the baking macarons solution. When baking macaroons, before you put it in the oven you tap the bottom of the pan a few times on the tabletop to bring the bubbles to the top and pop themselves. Here's where it probably isn't an easy idea but might totally already exist, something you could put below it in the oven to just tap the bottom a few times while its melting. Or take it out of the oven every so often and tap the bottom yourself. You can see the baker in this Try Guys video explaining it and then Keith mentions it too: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pc2YorWkqpfWdKs.html

New subscriber having just watched your video on making glasses, and ironing the plastic bags for the chair, thoroughly enjoyed both, and appreciate the amount of work put in to produce them, superb. Hope you don’t mind my offering of some suggestions. Could it or would it be possible for you to make groundsheets, tarps, hammock's, fly sheets and such, for camping?. Or to use as much plastic as possible, per item, is there a way of bonding your ironed sheets of plastic bags together, hopefully, allowing you to make larger items, such as to make a kayak, or canoe, solid or folding, not sure inflatable would work, crazy idea I know, however, if one worked out, maybe produce both, also make the paddles, as well as tents and gazebo’s, ordinary and patio umbrellas, so many things can be done. Again hope you don’t mind, wish you the very best for Xmas and the New Year, 👍🥃.
