Here's the long awaited video where I test if my Champion 100520 8750 watt inverter generator can power my 4 Ton AC Unit using propane after converting it to a tri-fuel (gasoline, propane, or natural gas) generator using the motor snorkel conversion kit. My 4 Ton AC has the Microair Easy Start soft starter to reduce the starting amps to something the generator can handle.

Your neighbors will love that loud monster. I powered my house 27 days from a generator. I was really the only one doing it. Some people had small generators and just used it a few hours each day for their refrigerators. I had the fuel and the power to run my whole house. I now have a generator that ‘s diesel and is super quiet. I did a test run on the weekend of 5 hours and nobody even knew.

That's awesome! I didn't know diesel runs quieter than gasoline. I know propane makes my generator run quieter than gasoline. What model diesel generator do you have? I'd be interested in researching into other generators - thanks!

You have to make sure all other breakers in the house totally off, start the inside air handler first, NOT the entire A/C system, the inside air handler should be on a separate breaker, once the air handler starts up, and is running for a few minutes, then start the outside condenseing unit, once your outside A/C unit is up and running, you can turn on other breakers you wish to run inside. It's a several step process but it should get you up and running on gas or propane.

If your generator will run your AC with natural gas, it should run with propane. The problem, I believe, is the single propane tank is not able to provide enough fuel. Get one of those Y adaptors to attach 2 propane tanks to your generator and it should work. Rather than 3/8ths standard propane hose, you may want to use 1/2" or 3/4" hose after the propane tanks are merged. I have a Champion with a Motor Snorkel installed as well, love it, more expensive, but I went 3/4" all the way.

I haven't run it with natural gas yet, only gasoline and propane so far. I plan to make a video when I set up a natural gas line from the house to the generator. Definitely going with 3/4 inch for that since natural gas has less pressure (and less volume) than propane. Thanks for the tips!

I haven't read all the comments but consider increasing the capacitor size inside your softstart unit to further reduce the LRA a bit more. I see you have a micro-air and these guys are super helpful. I have a 3.5 ton AC but had to go with their larger sofstart (for the 5 ton) to get my LRA to under 34 AMPS (Originally is 104). This solved my issue without bitting the bullet on a larger inverter generator and installing a 50am inlet for it . Hope this helps.

Even if the peak start is above your surge on the generator, it should still start. The power factor, how quick that surge is, and the fact that the amperage shoots up because of the voltage drop. I believe what happens is that on some starts, the pressure in the compressor is high causing it to take a bit more to start. This causes a severe drop in momentary voltage which in turn runs the amperage up significantly and why you saw 70 something amps on that first pull. The soft start sees it as an overcurrent and cuts the power or the soft start takes longer to start. With it being to close to not starting it sometimes, you might want to ditch it starting the AC. I have a 5 ton and 8500/11500 generator. Easy start would get start amps to 35ish. As soon as it was on generator power, that was 50-60. Sometimes it would fail to start, sometimes it would get it. I didn’t see that as a viable option so I returned the easy start. Im sticking to cooling just half of my house on a newer 3 ton. Generator never has an issue starting it so I feel comfortable leaving on over night with the many cycles it does.

You discovered one of the downsides of inverter generators; they don't surge well. Looking at other comments, it sounds like you were able to richen up the engine to get a little more power out of it. Also, a few hundred watts of standby loads in the house, here or there, could make the difference. It would be cool if the easy start could be tuned to optimize the starting current or trip thresholds even lower. Cheers!

Jonathan, I am a dealer for Motor Snorkel. Great video, however I think your AC unit is too big for the Champion model you have, regardless of what fuel you use. Even with a Microair Easy Start unit, the running watts I believe are too much. It is not advisable for any portable generator to run at max wattage load for any significant length of time. For example if your 4 ton AC takes 6kw to run (not start) then you need ideally an 8-10kw continuous generator for extra capacity. I will be doing a video soon in the next week or so on a Tri-Fuel Conversion. The important note a lot of people miss is how to adjust the load block above the demand regulator. LEANER is better/cooler on propane/NG. It's the opposite with gasoline where leaner means HOTTER combustion temperatures which is BAD. Cheers and keep up the content!
@jonathanDIYs
@jonathanDIYs Жыл бұрын
Hey Bassguitarist1985 - thanks for commenting! I totally agree with you on making sure that the generator isn't maxed out. However, I measured the continuous running wattage of my 4 ton AC and it is around 3.1kW. With all the lights and small appliances running (just no oven or dryer), it stays under 4kW load. With that, I'm staying between 50-75% max load which I think is generally safe. I don't know why my AC didn't cooperate during this video trying it on propane, but it did a lot better in my next video when I tried using NG. Check it out here - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fM2hn8pqs7rMcoE.html. Thanks for the tips on tuning the load block - that's exactly what I read when doing my research. I think it is great when people put out more content on this topic - looking forward to seeing your video!

I did a test run on my Champion Power Equipment 100520 8750-Watt DH Series Open Frame Inverter today. Number 1 problem is RFI. If you have AM Radios, then forget this generator. The RFI is no where near as low as my 1990 Honda EX4500 which does not interfere with my AM radios. This Champion 100520 will not be replacing my EX4500. It will remain a good higher wattage back up.

Great content! I recently purchased the harbor freight version of this inverter generator (same output but gasoline only). Had a coupon that brought it down to $900. We have a 3 ton AC upstairs and 2 ton downstairs. Having the house wired next week with an interlock switch and I'm going to install the micro air soft start on the 2-ton unit. We spend most of our time downstairs anyways except all of the bedrooms are upstairs. Not a problem at all to use an air mattress or sleep on the couch to stay cool during the summer if we have an outage. I'm thinking the 2 ton unit will start easy. For heat, both units are gas and draw very little power. Gas dryer, gas range, gas hot water also helps reduce our power load.

@jonathanDIYs Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'm happy you found the content useful. After you get your generator inlet / interlock kit setup, you might want to try starting the 2 ton AC without a soft start. There might be enough power to start it without one. If you don't need it, you might be able to save several hundred dollars. Overloading the generator once shouldn't hurt anything - the breaker should just trip protecting all the equipment. Hope your setup works well! Having gas for everything else is really great. @@jonathanDIYsgot my interlock wired up and soft start installed on the downstairs 2 ton unit. Inrush amps is only 23 and running amps is 6. Generator starts it up great. I'm sure consumption will be higher in the summer when it's hot, tested in 60 degree temps. Our upstairs AC unit is a 3 ton and will not be running it on generator. If we have an outage in the summer, we will just live downstairs and sleep on the couches/air mattress. No problem at all running the whole panel. Running the house on it now to break in the unit.
@jonathanDIYs
@jonathanDIYs Жыл бұрын
@@BrianNC81 Awesome! Glad that's working for you! You probably could have the upstairs 3 ton unit running on generator too if you wanted. Maybe not at the same time, but one at a time would probably be no issue. So for your inrush on the 2 ton unit, if you multiply it by the voltage (240), you can get the total watts used - 240*23=5,520 watts. That leaves you with about 2000 watts of headroom which is pretty good for you not to have to worry about having everything turned off just to get your AC on. Last tip I'd give is don't forget to change out the oil after the initial break-in. Some people change it after only even an hour or two because there may be metal filings that need to be cleared out from the factory.
@BrianNC81
@BrianNC81 Жыл бұрын
@@jonathanDIYs I probably could if I bought another soft start but at $400 probably not worth it for how often power goes out. The manual recommends changing oil after the first 20 hours. When you cut main power and restored with auxiliary power your EasyStart went into a time delay mode and will not function properly until it resets. If you can switch from gasoline to propane on the fly I would start A/C with generator on gasoline then switch to propane while the A/C is running. When your A/C is off the pressure will equalize and your lock rotor amps (LRA) on start up will be the same regardless if it’s been off for a half hour or two weeks it will be the same. Hope this helps 🇺🇸

I'm still a little confused and can't figure out why the last time I tried this, I was able to start up on gasoline, but this time, even when I tried switching back to gasoline, I still didn't have enough power and the easy start was going into a fault state. Does different weather conditions affect the LRA?

I'm a bit surprised since I own a tri-fuel Champion model 100416 with specs similar to yours. Like you I have a Micro-Aire easy start installed on both my 4ton and 2.5ton central air units and either will run on natural gas along with the fridge, microwave, and lights. I manage the loads, i.e., I don't run everything simultangeously without reducing the loads. I would call Champion and/or Micro-Aire for some feedback and question whether your "Snokel Tri-Fuel" is providing enough gas pressure, although I would think running on gasoline should provide enough energy. Have you tried to "relearn" your Micro-Aire? Starting amps seem high to me with the easy start.
@jonathanDIYs
@jonathanDIYs Жыл бұрын
Hi Thomas, thanks for commenting. The specs on your generator look a tad bit more powerful than mine - Gasoline: 10,000 starting watts and 8000 running watts, propane: 9000 starting watts and 7200 running watts, natural gas: 8750 starting watts and 7000 running watts. My generator is 8750 starting watts on gas, so I can imagine it gets down to probably 8000 starting watts with propane which is only around 33 amps at 240V which is pretty little. It's definitely the microair that is giving up during the process. I haven't tried "relearn" yet on the micro-air, but i'll give that a shot when I try to run the generator on natural gas. I am going to be working on the plumbing for that sometime soon and will have another video up for that. Thanks for the suggestion!

At what pressure did you set the propane regulator? My propane test on a converted HF generator showed that 1 psi "flooded" the engine, and it would not start. 1/2 psi worked fine, and the generator immediately surged to carry a twelve-amp load. Will unsuccessful tests like this damage the A/C compressor?
@jonathanDIYs
@jonathanDIYs 10 ай бұрын
What type of generator do you have? If it is an inverter generator, it is mostly safe. If you're using a regular generator, you're probably sending fluctuating voltage and frequency to the AC which isn't the best. My propane regulator is a 1/2 psi regulator. I just use the load block to adjust the fuel. I think I had to turn the knob 8-10 turns.

With an easy start? Probably! I wish they made inverter generators cheaper though. If money wasn't an issue, I'd probably go with a parallel linked generator like the Genmax GM9000ied or the Duramax XP9000iH. Both do around 7500 watts individually and then 15000 watts when paralleled... The problem right now is if I start getting into that spending bracket, I might as well start considering permanently installed standby generators and it just isn't worth the cost for me for the once or twice a year power outage I have. All in all, I am still under $2k, even with all the trifuel conversions and the modifications to the house to safely accept generator power.
