In this episode we look at the common question of whether there are certain things we can tell ourselves to lower the hyperarousal at night.
We learn that there are foundational truths, but when we try to use these truths to convince a doubting brain, things get tricky. On the flip side, when our intent becomes anything but trying to convince a doubting brain, things become easier and easer.

Thank you Daniel, I recently bought set it and forget it and feel like I'm getting my life back. In the last 12 days, I've slept naturally 10 of them, from a 2 month period of no sleep without heavy medication. I still have the bad night here and there, but understand my sleep drive will take over and I've learned to do things on those days that I enjoy. I went golfing the next day after a bad night with friends and no one noticed I didn't sleep. So simple but I found the line that insomnia is created in my thoughts and habits in thag book really helpful. I'm almost finished the book and think my journey is nearly over thanks to it.

When I first got the education a month ago I was relieved and hopeful but now my anxious brain feels too focused on ‘sleep will come.’ I just watch all night for it to come. My head hurts from being so vigilant even when I try to watch tv. I haven’t been sleeping at all

Hang in there, it’s so common that education actually turns into a sleep effort. “Now I have the education, why won’t I sleep”. Well it’s the effort of course creating some struggle. But this is such a normal part of the journey, when our brain realizes and no longer creates efforts, things get easier

I really like this podcast. It helps a lot. I saw on another on of your podcasts or the book Set it and Forget it. I can't remember. But writing down my worries for 5 or 10 minutes a day is working for me. I add the things I am upset or mad about also. Most days I am writing the same stuff as the day before but it does make me not spend my days thinking about this stuff so I am sleeping.

Daniel I really like what you said at the end -it's the knowledge of the education and the wisdom of letting go. I've been struggling with the brain-zap hypnic jerks again since Christmas after 7 months clear... I got v triggered, then nasty flu, then bad virtigo. Its funny as I managed to clear the virtigo one day -I just found myself saying 'I've had enough of that -no more' as it started up. I just calmly let it go and it never bothered me again. I would love to be able to do this with the jerks but I have been honestly, deeply terrified of them. Its almost as if my brain now starts checking the content of the dreams as they start up and alerting me about the 'incorrect' content or it just jolts me awake. I have become really caught up on having the right mindset & lost feeling of being able to aquire that naturally. Its such a fine balance of trust but not obsessing, sometimes I feel I need a long free period without work to be able to really let go control and put this into practice (& I only work part time anyway)
@lucylight176
@lucylight176 Жыл бұрын
What I meant by brain checking content of dream onset is -obviously dreams are weird and random and its as if it's OCD-like checking quickly, saying 'this wouldn't happen' 'that music's not right' etc -I guess the frontal brain cortex or whatever - has gone on overdrive! Then I feel I have to get up & really calm myself & get to trust point -but I also fear my brain feels it needs to go through all this to get to 'safe spot' AAAGGGHHH!!!!!

Thank you so much for all your videos Coach Daniel, they are really very helpful, I just wish I had come across them at the start of my insomnia journey 5 years ago. Just a quick question or thought I had recently. I love how you say it’s OK to stay in bed and not to stress about leaving the bed when you can’t sleep. The stress of doing that was too much for me and didn’t work. It made things worse and I was like a jack in the box the whole evening.However if we stay in bed are we not reinforcing the awake bed connection even more?

Hi Debs, so glad you are here now… but yes hope more find us earlier and wish you had. I’d say this - the connection that keeps us struggling isn’t bed-awake but awake-danger, when wakefulness no longer keeps us awake, then there’s no struggle. And the awake-danger connection can change regardless of where we are

Daniel i think i was doing this a bit wrong. I was trying to positive think my way to get sleep. So when i lie in bed when anxious thoughts about sleep come i force to think positively because i believed that it was up to my positive thoughts that would cause me to sleep and that if i couldnt think positive or if one negative thought came then i couldnt sleep. This caused me to get super hyper aroused Friday night to the point that little to no sleep came and i couldnt keep anything down in my stomach.

So i was using all these techniques including positive thoughts to hold sleep by its neck so that i could pour all these things into it so that i can control it to sleep better. Yes its good to live a positive happy life but not to control sleep. So i have to learn to just let go and allow the panic attacks and hyper arousal and accept wakefulness. BFT here

Thank you coach Daniel🙏 Lately my brain is doubting that being awake is safe. Because recently, I stumbled upon a comment from a community member that confirmed that insomnia has caused a cognitive decline. Once I have read the comment, my brain sent me alarms (thoughts, fears,..). Is there an evidence that I can rely on that can disprove this comment ? N.B: I am sleeping well ..but I am still sensitive to any information that I find about the health consequences of insomnia.

Hi Peace, So glad things are easier. And you know, it’s difficult to disprove a claim. Like I could say eating tofu causes gallstones - how can we disprove this? The burden of evidence imho is with the person making the claim! And I’ve never seen any such claims hold up. Also - often seeking reassurance can be part of the safety behaviors that keep us in some struggle

Sadly with my new sleep paralysis , I am terrified to sleep! The visuals are scary and hearing peoples experiences make it worse. My bed used to be my sanctuary, now I am scared to sleep. @jamesmoore4827

I went through this where I was scarred to go to sleep, but at the same time I was scarred about not being able to sleep. And while I didn't suffer from sleep paralysis per-se, I did used to have extremely vivid and often disturbing dreams which caused me not to want to sleep. And where I could feel myself between the waking and sleeping state which would startle me. In my case I came to the conclusion that sub-consciously I feared death and this was seeping into my my sub-conscious when going to sleep. And the more I thought about it, the more I couldn't sleep and the more I couldn't sleep the more I was worrying that if I didn't sleep I could die which would cause more troubling thoughts and on and on like a vicious circle. My father was diagnosed with terminal cancer and all this started around that time hence the fear of death and being afraid to fall asleep. How this resolved itself was simply letting go and confronting my own mortality. I sought out on a spiritual quest of sorts to find all the answers to all the big questions such as "what happens when I die?", "Is there a God"? "What is the meaning to all this, if any?" etc etc. And it was only when I resolved these questions that I had asked of my self for basically my entire life did both my sleep (and vivid dreams) and fear of death (or fear of anything) start to fade and eventually went away. I still have vivid dreams but not nearly as so vivid. But I sleep fine now except I have funny sleep schedule lol.

I struggle to accept and not worry about insomnia when it gets to the second or third night because I become obsessed that I won't be able to function or preform well at my volnteer job. Its also holding be back from applying for jobs. Im trying to move on after an injury. In the past I have had to take some sick days from a previous job due to not sleeping and feeling unsafe to drive or my able to do my job . And got bullied from my manager. Then I had a head injury and when I didn't get enough sleep i had a mental breakdown so that has added to my anxiety of not being able to sleep. And how to manage it .
