Do all mental wellness issues come from the same place? Can a simple model solve every problem you will have in your entire life?
In this video I share how I have come to believe that this is the case and how a new framework will help the channel get better.

This is an incredible insight! I was actually meaning to mention to this to you awhile back when going through my worst. That the solutions you presented for insomnia: re-directing attention and focus away from sleep, and practicing that acceptance and not reacting to symptoms applies I think to most mental health problems such as anxiety, and depression! We have to firstly roadblock a pathway in our brain that cycle we are stuck in, and then re-direct our focus to something healthy! For me playing learning guitar, finding a new girlfriend, and being more mindful in everyday life has helped me tremendously! We must not focus on symptoms, they are just our limbic system brain sending us false messages. Recognizing and acknowledging that is first, then again focusing on the happiness in your life and finding JOY again. :) Thank you Daniel so much.

Ernest Rillman Ernest! Thanks so very much for the encouragement here 🤗. We had made the same realization - all these things are connected! I’m realizing that although this is radical to me, when I now take a look at Buddhist philosophy - much of it is there, but perhaps not in a form that is easily approachable or “modern”. But you know what I thought more than anything reading your comment - I need all the help I can when exploring how this model works for insomnia. I’m going to be posting a series of perhaps 5-8 videos over the next few weeks, it would mean the world if you’d check them and help me fine tune, see what works and what doesn’t make sense. Very excited about this, I think we can come up with something big!

Hihi I definitely want to make sure everyone here feels welcome regardless of political thoughts or anything else, insomnia happens to all humans! But yes I try to read with an open mind and although I fully see why many people have a lot of problems with the book, I will say that when it comes to sleep, the more we try to control it, the more it slips away!!

Oh my gosh, I am actually writing this book right now. Maybe I should actually say that I’m editing a new book, because I’m taking the captions from the success stories and transforming into a sort of oral history type of book. Anyways, my point is that just like for you, CBT for insomnia often was the darkest place for so many people. I see this pattern as I’m preparing this book. So I’m so glad that you found the channel and, hopefully the Natto way will be the way :-)

@@thesleepcoachschool8192 I’m hopeful. Still learning the basics, since I just joined yesterday. Even though it’s only been a day since I’ve started the videos, I already have that feeling of “home” with this…I know it’s where I belong because it feels so easy and right. With everything I’ve tried before, I always had a lingering feeling of “this isn’t right”, or “there’s something off about this”. Not so here. Now I’m just eager to learn more. Or should I *not* be eager?🤔😏Should I listen to the videos very slowly, whenever I happen to find time, in order to counteract the desire?🤔

So glad you’re here 😊 at home! And you know, I think “binging” is great when this is new. The first step is education, and as long as you feel you’re learning, I think it’s all good. And you know, at some point you’ll sort of get tired of binging, because you already know the answers…and then naturally the next step happens… letting go

@Lauren McDonald, would you mind sharing your story with CBT-i? I am currently doing CBT-i and it feels incredibly brutal. The worst part is it makes me feel hopeless as I'm constantly told that it's the gold standard treatment for insomnia, yet i feel like it's not working for me.

This sounds just like the cognitive model and this is why CBT-I is so helpful - it helps challenge those automatic thoughts and helps change the way we react to them. Very slick video, Daniel!

Insomnia Coach Martin! You know it did strike me how much of what Brooke Castillo talks about, particularly how emotions aren’t random but are generated from thoughts is similar to what you taught me about automatic thoughts! What I thought was really cool with this circumstance -> thought -> emotion -> action -> result model was how approachable it was. Much more than textbooks on cbt. Oh and also - the circumstance part is like ACT. So in this model you have both cbt and act! Anyways, I’m very excited about this and please if you have time check out this series of videos starting next week where we’ll explore the model and insomnia. Your input would be super appreciated!

Hi Daniel this is Malena first of all I want to say thank you for all you’re videos. Thank you for helping others it’s a blessing to have people like you. My insomnia started a couple months ago when it was hard for me to sleep i started taking melatonin, then I started taking Benedryl, then magnesium and everything stoped working, you’re right that stuff does not work. Sleep hygiene does not work for chronic insomnia. I went 3 days without sleeping . I kept crying to my husband about how I couldn’t sleep. I went to the doctor she prescribed 10 days of Ambien . I goggled Ambien and it freak my out to think that one day it will stop working as well. I did not want to become dependent on a medication. So I did the whole sleep hygiene again and it really didn’t work .Then I started taking herbal teas and that help for a while . Then I had another bad round of insomnia. I didn’t sleep for 2 days but for like 3 hours each day. It’s weird I have a racing mind. I think about random things at night for no reason. My head was pounding my eyes hurted just to move them. I suddenly just crashed . I was jealous to see my husband sleeping. Every time I woke up and seen my family they’ll ask how did you sleep and I will say not good. They kept saying well that’s not surprising. Insomnia is taking my joy I am a emotional wreck . My sister said to me one day hey Malena stop drinking tea if you don’t enjoy it. It’s not cutting it for you’re insomnia. And I thought for a second she’s right. Why am I drinking this tea thinking it’s going to put me to sleep... I watched so many of you’re videos and I thought to myself. My insomnia can’t kill me. I need to not put so much focus on it how you said don’t feed you’re insomnia. So I did just that. And I slept good for 2 days without any kind of supplements but that’s was after 2 days of only 3 hours of sleep. If you have any other extra tips I’ll be so grateful. One specific question. In you’re videos you recommend getting out of bed if not tired . But when I get up and it’s dark and everything sleeping. I focus so much on the fact that I’m the only one uo and can’t sleep. Any suggestions for this?? Thank you so much..

kombat Dear Malena, thanks so much for this comment! I’m super happy that you not only checked the videos but actually made changes and slept better! There’s so so much in your comments that is typical for how insomnia starts and how it keeps going. Much to learn, really thankful for you sharing! Now to your questions. The most important thing always is to keep going and build sleep confidence. When it comes to waking up early, it’s good not to check the time, it’s good to know that you can’t force yourself to sleep and trying will backfire, and also - you don’t have to leave the bed unless you’re frustrated in bed. I’ll expand on this tonight in Ask Daniel 31 or on. Thursday in 32! Stay in touch!

Mikael Llerena learning is the key. Learning why we have insomnia , and understanding how it keeps going , sets you on the right track to sleep. Hi Daniel. I have just started to view your videos day before. Thanks for your passionate sharings. Do you mean that what insomniacs should do is just to ignore sleeplessness?
@thesleepcoachschool8192
@thesleepcoachschool8192 2 жыл бұрын
So glad you found your way here 😊 And you know I would say this - if we try to ignore insomnia so that it goes away, then there’s going to be some trouble like there always is when we try to control things On the other hand, when we see that it’s our attempt to have control that leads to struggle, then automatically our attention shifts to things that are meaningful and fun, and then we aren’t “ignoring” but we are just not finding anything interesting in our sleep… this helps 🙂!

I'm a certified coach with the Life Coach School and found you researching ways to help with my insomnia aside from medication which I currently take. You've inspired me to get coaching and coach myself on my sleep issues. If you would lile to discuss the model in greater detail I'm happy to do so. Some things you were staying as circumstance were thoughts. But you have a good understanding. It takes practice to really nail down the model. Do you have any resources for sleep issues and ADHD?

Hi! Thanks so much for commenting and glad you found the channel! Yes you know, my wife introduced me to Brooke Castillo and I was really blown away by the simplicity and generalizability of the model, wow! And totally, I made this series of videos in a state of excitement, but not with full understanding of the model, it would be great to discuss this, if you’d like to be a guest on the channel that would be super. I don’t have any specific ADHD resources, I teach basically that this is a circumstance (like many many others!) that has impact on sleep but doesn’t stand in the way of sleeping without a struggle at all. It’s very related to teaching on sleep disruption vs insomnia. Anyways let me know if you’d like to be a guest and we can cover a bunch of things!

Very interesting, for me especially the first part of your video was interesting because you talked about how focussing on the outcome is the actual reason for not reaching the outcome! This could be true for anxiety too. Since my journey with ffi anxiety began, all my energy went into combatting the anxiety, getting rid of it, so I extremely focussed on the outcome and was not very successfull. What if this was my problem - if i should not focus on my actual goal, losing the anxiety, but more on accepting the anxiety and HANDLING it with different strategies and training those strategies? I fully agree with you that fighting an emotion makes the emotion even worse. Maybe the biggest and most difficult step is accepting the problem and the resulting anxiety as real, as something we can't get rid of but we can learn living with - and maybe this is our task: to accept the problem, invite it and look how we handle it in the best way and giving up the thought of losing the problem - you understand what I try to say? :-D

Vegan ASMR Lea! Totally understand (at least I’m pretty dang sure I do 😝). What you described to me sounds like what is often called acceptance commitment therapy or mindfulness based therapy or meta cognitive therapy. Instead of trying to attack a problem or solve a problem, you kinda look at it from the outside. Invite it, explore it but don’t engage with it. I find tons of insight in this comment and, like I’ve asked Ernest and Martin - please stick around for the next few weeks where we explore this model further: I really appreciate and value all your input!!

@@thesleepcoachschool8192 i will do so for sure, because this is helping me so much and I really look forward to all of your videos! :) I discovered that it is extremely helpful for a situation in which you are overwhelmed by (sleep) anxiety to make this step back and look at it from the outside, reconsidering it by asking yourself: okay - you feel like you are in a dangerous Situation right now (never sleep again, having ffi etc). But just focus on how you FEEL right now "behind" your anxiety. Is this actually a dangerous Situation? Does it feel unnatural and like a serious disease? Like do you feel seriously ill, in a bad condition right now? Obviously no - you're just awake which is a perfectly natural state of being. Once you realize how ridiculously harmless your situation is and how good and natural you actually felt if the anxiety was not there - this is really eye-opening to understand how normal insomnia is. Because this is what you actually need - you don't need to read or hear how harmless insomnia is, you need to FEEL it. And you can only feel it in the situation when it occurs.
