In this edition of Insomnia insight we are introduced to a brand new Natto term: amplification.

Thank you so much Daniel! I’m able to sleep peacefully right now! There are some days where I can’t go to sleep, but it’s okay since it’s only just stress and it will go away. Thank you so much for bringing me confidence in my life about sleep!

Great explanation Daniel, this the perfect discussion, it is really helpful as I was going to some anxiety problems that first started with lack of sleep, but once I started sleeping well the anxious thoughts turned to other reasons why to be anxious. But the concept of stop blocking the messages it’s a good way to stop the constant and repetitive messages from the brain. Thanks!!😊

This is very helpful thank you. As an add on it was helpful for me to think about specific ways my brain amplifies…. and how communication/feeling heard/understood feels to me. I think my amplification occurs when I am not aware of/can’t identify my core feeling…. and experience ‘racket’ feelings which mask the underlying feeling. So for example I might be feeling anger as a secondary emotions when the core feeling is actually fear. For me the tricky part is identifying what I am feeling and often this can take days to work out. Once I can recognise it, then de amplification can happen because I now feel seen and understood by myself and can consciously allow myself to feel my fear which will dissipate it. It’s not that I was ignoring my feelings as such, it’s because I struggle to identify the underlying feeling. It is helpful to understand that even if I am not consciously ignoring my feelings, nevertheless that’s the consequence and the reason my anxiety will persist….. until the core feeling is seen and acknowledged.

What a great explanation of this subject ! I must say that it's a deep concept to understand fully, it required a total concentration to grasp of this message, in fact i have to listen to this podcast twice in order to completely understood what Daniel saying. In the end, i do have one questions Daniel - for example- when i can feel my symptom ( heart palpitation) just coming, i then i just continue to go about my business and do whatever i was doing without completely concentrating on the heart paputations, but i still can feel the discomfort of symptoms.....is this call " ignore "? " Accepting" ? or "surrendering" ? Thank you Daniel, you are the best !!

Oh great question, I need to know this too!
@Sensimillia97
@Sensimillia97 6 ай бұрын
I think is accepting .You can't do something about your palpitations so you continue your day ,keep doing this just continue your day.Thats how my anxiety started faded away.No in one day but it started to fade away .Now If have a symptom I can't do anything about it so I continue my day even if I have a symptom.And one day you will see that it doesn't bother you so much because you live your day even with your symptom and you will start to not pay much attention because your attention will start to grow in other things to your life .That's my story ,I believe that you are in the right path .

Awareness of emotions produced by thoughts. "This happens to me (trouble falling asleep) because I only think about sleeping/focus on sleeping" - this approach produces amplification/frustration. To fade this is to realize that that approach keeps you awake.

@thesleepcoachschool8192 6 ай бұрын
Hi Michele, Thanks for the support! And I’d say both CatCat and bunilestian said it nicely. Accepting and surrendering to me as both ways of non doing, which really helps. Doesn’t mean what bothers us immediately goes away, but it bother us less and less. Ignoring to me often means “let’s try to not think of this so it goes away” which is tricky.

Do you think there is a cycle of amplification and release then? I often observe my anxiety cycles through days or weeks of high alert and seems to pop like a balloon several weeks later to allow me to sleep. I'm still figuring out how I do this.
@thesleepcoachschool8192
@thesleepcoachschool8192 6 ай бұрын
Oh yes, there’s often exactly this cycle where there’s amplification and release. The release can happen because we get distracted or exhausted or for any other reason let go of trying to stop the thing we don’t want to experience

Hey Daniel, this was a really insightful video. Ever since my mother died 2 years ago, I’ve been getting an intense fight or flight response to sounds in the house like people closing doors, walking etc. It has gotten worse and worse to the point it has spread to everything and I have to wear headphones all the time and life is unbearable. This is sometimes called misaphonia. Do you think what you said in this video applies to my situation

Cbt encourages me to reason with my anxious thoughts. If I understand right you are saying I should sit with them. How can I sit with them without encouraging them? My fear is having another sleep related breakdown. I'm scared of the feelings that come along with anxiety. I can see pushing them away is not the answer but I don't want to encourage them either and slip down that rabbit hole. So is it like mindfulness where you thank your brain for the thought but choose not to buy into it? I can rationalise really well the first few days of a relapse but the longer it persists I become more unable to think reasonably.
@thesleepcoachschool8192
@thesleepcoachschool8192 5 ай бұрын
Hi, yes, it’s like the mindfulness idea. We can take note of thoughts without encouraging or discouraging, like an observer. Sometimes we find that we scared of being scared, and we can see there’s no actual thing to be scared of…

Hi. I am going through CBT-I and sleep restriction right now and im starting my week 5 now. I have seen some results as falling to sleep within 5-10 minutes for a few days when I had around 5 and a half hour sleep window with some sleep medication. But when I increase the sleep window I start having difficult sleeping again. Does it mean I need to keep a strict sleep window for longer? When I having difficulty sleeping I also sometimes end up sleeping on the coach, does that stagnate the progress of sleep restriction?
@thesleepcoachschool8192

Hi there. You know, I’ve really abandoned the CBTi ideas like sleep restriction… I’ve seen that so often it leads to more tracking and preoccupation and trouble sleeping. If you check the playlist This is Natto you’ll find a different way, the timeless sleep window and much more that can really help

@@user-zk5lm3zr8mHi, its alot better now! I felt like sleep restriction helped me, but at the same time I had to do the mental battle of learning to not care and face my fear about sleep which is the one that really did it for me. I sleep every night now, but it can sometimes take a while. But even if I don't get alot of sleep one night, I can still have a great day after and thats gold for me.

Daniel, do you have any experience helping clients apply this concept to chronic tinnitus? I have been able to successfully cure my insomnia 100% with your methods (thank you). Tinnitus seems like a bit of a similar problem. The more you focus on it, the louder it seems. I feel like through accepting it and not fighting it, it can fade out of my awareness. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

Neuropathy is how my insomnia started. There’s a usual level of tingling that I can sleep through but when it flares up, it can be very hard to sleep and those are the times I have then spiraled into insomnia. My neuropathy is of unknown origin and has been around for 4 years so I don’t think it will ever go away. I’ve wondered how to apply these principles to help on those nights. Similar to the tinnitus

I have anxiety attack before bed showing as heart racing and sensation and legs trembling. This keeps me from sleeping and make it an endless loop to be able to fall asleep. I don’t know what to do I think the easy way is to take anxiety medication I feel it is almost impossible to control the mind as you are describing … I have been like that for one or two weeks now I am still new to insomnia … I find if I allow the trembling and anxiety attack it will never fade away I tried to not think about it and it stays there it fades when I control it for some time and then it comes back and fades around 5am when I am exhausted …. I live in hell and I don’t see a way to exit it by mind

This insomnia has got progressively worse so trying to implement some of these methods but I’m confused on how to do this with my babies unpredictable schedule. Obviously the added challenge of having to fall back asleep after being woken up
