Are you getting old and tired of FEELING old? There's only one thing to do, punch fear in the face and learn something new! I love riding my Onewheel GT, but I had to try a new challenge, learning to ride an EUC (Electric Unicycle). In this video, I've documented my progression from complete noob to, I don't know, advanced beginner maybe? It wasn't smooth, it wasn't as easy as learning to ride the Onewheel, but it sure was worth it.
Part II - I'm Improving! - • Am I Too Old To Learn ...
0:00 - What! An EUC?
0:48 - First Attempt
2:15 - Finally Riding a Bit
4:30 - I Got My Own EUC!

6:56 - Skills Practice 2
9:08 - Riding Backroads
10:11 - Riding on One Foot?
10:30 - Happy Trails!
12:27 - Goodnight!
Here are some links to stuff I use in the video:

I learnt to ride an EUC at 60. I'm 61 now and have done over 3500 miles on my S22 and just can't get enough of it. Around here, the mountain bike tracks are steep and rocky. Lots of tight switchbacks. To turn tightly, I point my chest in the direction I want to go. Just like skiing. Unfortunately, the EUC is addictive and I just want MORE! Keep up with the practice 👍

Yes! So happy to hear that! I don't know if you've tried trail riding yet (be cautious at first!), but it's actually a really good leg and core workout compared to just cruising pavement. I'm struggling with overweight, inactivity, and just getting older myself. EUCs are such a fun way to get moving.

I started on a V5 F at 63 years old. Had so much fun that after about two months I bought a V 11 and have been loving that for just about eight months now. I have a total of about 1200 miles on the two wheels and really enjoy them both. Power pads really helped me feel more comfortable on the V11. I’d love to find some friends to ride with . I’ve never seen another person on one here. When I go into the office and the weather isn’t too bad I ride my V8S to the VRE station and then from the station in DC to work. I ride an EXN High Torque when I’m not going to be going up and down stairs and trolleying around. I do see OneWheels occasionally, and lots of scooters and e-bikes, of course. I know there are a couple DC ride groups, but I mostly don’t go downtown on weekends. I went to Paris a couple of months ago and saw seven or eight over the course of a week, I think they are catching on in places where people are less likely to drive.

Sorry, I don't have a succes story. About 4 years ago I saw a guy gliding around on Solowheel at the Oshkosh Air Show. He mentioned it was easy and it fit in his airplane. A few years went by and I started watching Marty from ElectricUnicycles, Cooch, Wrong Way and others influncted me to buy a EUC. I was 67 at the time. I tried holding onto fences and grocery carts but never got the confidence to just roll. After falling a dozen times (with all the protective gear) I gave up and sold the EUC. I moved on to Escooters and they're fun too. Maybe I should have hung in there a while longer...

It's taken me a while to figure out not everything is for everyone. A friend of mine suggested we get Onewheels and he barely touched his before selling it and I fell in love. Go figure? It was a very long time ago, but I had a solid foundation of balance-y sports like skiing and snowboarding in my youth, and I figure that helped me quite a bit in my willingness to just hop on and trust it (and myself). I do think most people would find Onewheel a bit easier to learn, but I also think they're easier to crash in, so it probably all balances out a bit. Success or not, I like your story.

I'm 47. I've been riding for about 4 1/2 years. I'll say, you got good really fast. I just learned that I have superman syndrome. It's something to watch out for. I got lucky and heard of it before anything really bad happened. I've spilled a lot of blood from this sport but haven't been hospitalized yet. After hearing Zen Lee talk about Superman syndrome I see I'm way too confident. I'm spreading the word in hopes of helping. You're really a natural at riding. This 44y/o youngster learned to ride last winter and now has 7000+ kilometers on his v11. It's weatherproof, i ride it through anything no exception - blizzards, sleet, salty road mush, all kinds of rain. Just rinse it in the shower and it's good as new. Its suspension is very basic and rudimentary, but its weight and slimness combo is what sells it. And its seat is very comfy, seated riding is like nothing else on EUCs! EUCs are empowering devices, therefore very addictive. After a short while it becomes a legs replacement, controlled by the spine with no brain needed. Personal teleporter.

Haha, watch yourself. You got it all online, hands down. For me it took 90 minutes to do a 2km (1.4 miles) ride first attempt. Day after I did a 6km ( 3.8 miles) ride and I was so exhausted. You got the advantage of doing some balance stuff before, I didnt have anything. Skating at teen's, doh. Was lousy at that too. Age for learning to ride an EUC? Redicilous thought. I was 58 when bought one, after watching YT videos. After 60 minutes I thought... wtf have I done, I sux as a human being. Half hour later... yeah, I got this. a month and a crash later... hmm, I dont. 6 months later? Omg Im a god of free moving by independent transportation... Hahaha. Keep your stuff going, an EUC takes you everywhere, and back home. Done my own videos and experimented a lot. Do the same. Cheers, bud.

At now 52 I bought my first euc (a v11) at the beginning of this year & after a few falls & bruises & later hit by a car (v11 took the hit, I just went rolling over the hood & just suffered some soreness for a few days), I upgraded to the Begode ex30, primarily for more range but I appreciate the overhead in speed being as my skills & confidence built I found myself riding faster & I fear possible cut-outs on the v11 when I hit 30mph. Anyway for me at 52 & a veteran "with issues" buying an euc to get out more in the fresh air, riding to the gym more to finally get some use of the membership I had been paying for but seldom going, cruising in the park by the water & just checking the scenery out from a whole different perspective than in a vehicle, this has been the best thing for a once workaholic feeling grumpy & depressed all the time due to just working & sleeping with no life outside of that. Now I'm like a child again that hate when it rain or too cold cause I want to ride my EX30 every chance I get. Only thing I hate about riding it to work is I live too close to the job (a little over 2 or possibly 3 miles) & that's just not long enough for a Begode ex30. Only other thing I hate about riding an euc are the nut jobs in vehicles not paying attention to what they're doing; running stop signs, riding at night with lights off, pulling out of side streets without so much as a pause & glance in both directions to see if its safe to do so, etc. So really its not riding the euc that's an issue here, its the many distracted &/or unqualified drivers on the road today.

That was most likely one of the fastest learning to ride an EUC I have ever seen as even the first try was pretty decent. I was about to give tips as it's a lot easier to learn if you have something to hold onto when riding, but it turns out you had a natural feel for it. It might be that riding OW helped as it's essentially the same, just a different standing position. I got some suggestions of EUC skills to learn: Going backwards, pendulum, jumping curbs and spin turn. With spin turn I mean at slow speeds you can turn simply by leaning and then twist the EUC to that direction. Can even be used to do a 180.
@MaynardsMidlifeCrisis

One thing makes it slightly inaccurate. Between the first tries in the driveway and the tennis court, there was another few minutes of struggling to free mount, and a few holding onto the fence (which I didn't find helpful) but my camera malfunctioned so I couldn't include it. I think Onewheel did help a lot. I just told myself, "trust the machine, relax, a little speed is your friend" and that makes a huge difference.

Honestly, you did way better then I did when I was first learning in that first segment. Free mounting without something to hold onto at first puts you well ahead of a lot of people starting out. It took about 4 hours of learning over the course of a couple weeks for normal riding for it to click, then the only thing limiting me was my body. It takes time to get the stabilizer muscles in your legs and muscle memory down so you can handle wobbles instinctively. And took a couple weeks to be able to free mount consistently. That moment when it clicks is just an amazing feeling, going from being unstable going straight to getting a bit more speed and the wheel gets more stable and you just start to flow. I started back in July this year with my 18XL and have 700 miles so far and its been a blast.

I have somewhat of an advantage that I was pretty athletic when young and skied and snowboarded at a pretty high skill level. 25+ years away from that didn't help much though. My beginning was rough but I did get up and ride awkwardly the first time. I think doing those goofy parking lot drills helped a lot, and then venturing onto easy trails really helped boost the confidence! I hope you give it a shot and can do it safely. Put on all the pads, injuries aren't as fun as riding. If I were going to give advice to someone who has done nothing similar, I'd say start out holding onto a rail or fence and spend a good amount of time getting used to how the wheel balances and responds to various subtle movements before taking off. Also, like I tell people learning to snowboard, if you can stop in control, everything else will come. Step on, step off, in control, until it's second nature. My theory is that when the wheel inevitably dies something that scares you, you'll be more.likely to dismount safely and gracefully. All the best to you!

The way you learned to ride is the same way I learned to ride. To me it is the best way. Many videos on KZfaq teaching to ride have too many unnecessary drills that are either too advance, don't teach the basics of riding (Useless) or makes the wall/pole a crutch. I spent 2 days doing their drills and all it did was get me super sweaty and sore. And still could not rid 5 feet from doing all that. The next day I ignored their advice, and just went out and did it without holding on wall, poles, fences etc. and was able to ride about 80+ yards. Ended up riding 4 miles around the parking lot. Same parking lot drills you did I did and they help a lot. I been working on backwards the past few weeks. That is way harder than going forward

39, riding for almost 2 years now. I am on my 3rd wheel, and still own 2 (sold my first one). Considered OW for a hot second but after I saw an EUC I never looked back at OW. It’s cool that people like them, just not for me. Riding a wheel is like therapy for me. Definitely saved me from abusing alcohol.

The new Tesla's are only 1020wh. I got , I assume, one of the last 1500wh Tesla's before Begode joined them. They were 1st offered w/ a 1020wh battery. Then a 1480wh. And finally a 1500wh battery. I don't think my batteries are larger or that there are more of them. I suspect the BMS is different. They gave no reason why the change was made in such a short period of time. It didn't cost me anymore than the 1480wh version. Still pretty happy w/ my EUC..

It's been 10 weeks with no contact from the supplier. It's coming from China to Sydney, Australia. I am looking at the V11. The cheapest i can find is $3500 in Australia. I found a V12 on gumtree, but it's got no suspension and is only 400 cheaper than a new one. You are giving me tips thanks a lot. My sons giving me grief wanting one cause im a girl and 44 😂.

I want one of these so bad. Only reason I don't have one is cuz I rode a hoverboard first to see if this kind of device would affect my equilibrium. However, the hoverboard rode out forward from under me when I tried to stop and I landed on my tailbone. When I watch others ride an EUC, they don't seem to do that. But do they really NOT? Cuz I don't want to buy one if the thing will keep dropping me. (i have protective gear for riding) Thanks for any input!
@MaynardsMidlifeCrisis
@MaynardsMidlifeCrisis 6 ай бұрын
I know we're all built different, but I actually have balance issues from a head injury and I don't really have a problem while riding. I've never tried a hoverboard, but an EUC is far more powerful and able to balance an adult than those little hoverboards. If you try an EUC, definitely gear up and keep your speed down while learning.

@MaynardsMidlifeCrisis
@MaynardsMidlifeCrisis 7 ай бұрын
Incredible progress, and incredible goals. There are quite a few wheels that will handle 300 lbs. I'm 100% sure at 287 you can find a great wheel that will carry you safely, I'm just not the best to make a recommendation as I only have experience in two different wheels. I think there are a few in the comments who could help you decide
@grb1969
@grb1969 7 ай бұрын
I'm 300#+ with gear. I've ridden on wheels from 300Watts to 3000 Watts. All of them are possible to operate and learn on but speed and acceleration are limited on lower power wheels, while the structure can be limiting even on 3000Watt wheels so selecting is critical if you intend to get the maximum utility from your wheel. If you're new to learning, the 16x (non-suspension) and V11 (suspension) are reasonable options. The problem arises in that you'll learn quickly and after 3-12 months, you're going to want to upgrade. This happens to be the same amount of time needed to expose all the preliminary design flaws in new model EUC that comes out. So for instance, if you may eventually an off-road beast like the V14 (currently in Beta testing), then learn on the 16x for the next 6-12 months and expect the bugs will be worked out of the V14 Adventure by the time Version 2-3 is released. {Most issues become known fairly quickly and parts can be upgraded, modified or replaced with aftermarket improvements from the community.} Most 300# newbies to the EUC hobby should stay away wheels that are still being modified as improvements are released... like the Commander Pro has some problems with the suspension motor mount brackets that are not yet resolved but would more likely negatively effect heavier riders due to strength/design flaws {Otherwise it's a fine wheel it will eventually be fixed, and this is normal for the industry to have growing pains when wheels come to market}. The S22pro is also another wheel which has not yet proven itself (even though many structural flaws have already been "fixed") but I personally cannot tolerate the maintenance intervals required for cleaning and replacing the roller-sliders every 6-12 months depending on use. {The entire Kingsong lineup of suspension wheels is unworthy of purchase- imho.} Personally, I'm waiting the a used V14 Adventure, which will take about 1-2 years before people seek to upgrade to the next greatest offering... by then, issues are known; for example, it would be worthwhile to get a Version 2 of the S22pro and need to upgrade the sliders but it's not worth getting the S20 or S22 unless the motor has been "pinned" and the controller updated, which leaves those early adopters with an unreasonable drop in both the value and price of their EUCs. Feel free to ask questions... the best part of the EUC hobby (other than the joy of riding) are the enthusiasts. {Lastly, plan to budget at least 2x the cost of your wheel on protective gear and aftermarket accessories... literally TWICE! ,,,so the gear should be bought to OUTLAST the next few wheels that you buy , so cheap gear is more costly than anyone expects. I buy the best used qear I can find because $900 knee braces and a $1200 carbon-fiber helmet are not in my budget if purchased new, even at 50% off.}

@MaynardsMidlifeCrisis
@MaynardsMidlifeCrisis 4 ай бұрын
I don't think wider EUCs really make a difference, but I haven't ridden that many. About all I can really say is once you have the feel for standing on it and learn to trust the forward/backward balance, learn how to step on and off without going anywhere. Once you know you can step off with control, a LITTLE speed is beneficial. It's way easier to balance when it's moving say 6-10 mph. If you get scared, just lean back to slow down and step off. That's probably terrible instructions, but it made sense for me.

I wish I had some way of knowing, but I don't. I think this was over about a three week span, but I simply don't know how many days or hours. I'd say most of the riding past the first couple days of learning to stay upright and in control were 10-15 mile coffee runs on country roads, so a decent amount of miles for sure.
