Can Bethesda Learn from Fallout 4's Failures?

What can Bethesda learn from the experience garnered from Fallout 4? Polarizing as it was, many consider Fallout 4 to be a lackluster RPG, merely a open world shooter with a Fallout coat of paint. How can Bethesda's next open world adventure improve upon it?
Also, there's so much to talk about regarding a game as big as Fallout 4 that I'm sure I missed things. Bear with me.

Fallout 4 was a shooter with RPG elements and I'm getting tired of RPG being stripped from my RPG's

Honestly, the reduction of RPG elements began with Fallout 3, Bethesda just admitted that Fallout was just a shooter now, and fit the RPG elements so they'd fit into a shooter now.

I don't think Bethesda will learn about Dumbing their games down. Reviewers give their games 9s when they lose content from previous games and dumb them down. Also Fallout 4 sold really well so why would they change it back to actually be an RPG?

Well.since this "Professional Reviewers" represent the majority of the community, why will they ever want to make an effort to apperoach with the old midset ? This reviewers and the early reviews that come with the speed of light right after the relese of the game are a toxic opon the gaming community. This is what Bethesda sees. The popular reviewers like Ign and Gamespot shows what the community think about the game from that moment and forever. Its like someone gives you a good grade but there are even more problems that needed to be deal with. Like they will never learn, and because this will forever represent the majority of the community, why someone learn from there mistakes ?? especially that they can get there voice with some "Persuation"

I have to disagree. I think that it is impossible for Bethesda not to notice how pretty every person who has played an Elder Scrolls before Skyrim or a Fallout before 4 agrees that they are the worst in the franchise (or at least close to it). They also can't ignore how most a lot of mods are made to add content to the games that were in the previous ones. You can call this false hope or naivety but it is better than expecting failure.

@GeteMachine

Bethesda won't learn anything until they actually ask critical fans what they want for FO instead of trying to turn FO into generic market appeal. FO just gets worse and worse the more they stray from the original premise and dumb it down to fit the current gaming mainstream culture. FO4 was a failure because it wasn't even FO anymore. Bethesda's RPGs already range from simplistic and buggy to dated and too straightforward. If they won't even give FO its own engine, and just copy+Paste from their Elder Scrolls, I doubt they'll really change anything. Even worse that they simply want Modders to do all their work for them to adjust gameplay, setting and graphics now while they get paid for it.

+Rags Another issue is that your character has a really defined backstory, married with a kid, soldier or lawyer as your occupation. trusts a robot to take care of a kid, etc. This, voice protagonist and Mass effect dialogue wheel. *The Unholy Trinity* that ruined role playing.

Javetts well, if you're going to have a voiced protagonist with a backstory you better damn well make it a badass story to make up for it, like the witcher 3. I never did could role play in the witcher as much as I did in vegas, but the amazing story made it worth it.
@BobBobson
@BobBobson 6 жыл бұрын
That's my issue with the backstory. Dude is a soldier. Should be proficient with weapons, maybe armor. Should have survival skills of some sort. But how the fuck are you supposed to be some prissy lawyer bitch who can magically make and use weapons as well as a trained soldier? The fuck? Wouldn't it make more sense to have the PC as the soldier, regardless of gender? You're always the soldier, spouse is always the lawyer. Bam. It works. Such a tiny edit, and it makes the whole thing work.

That's why i hated the witcher. Could never get to like it. The least you can do for a game today is the player having the way to choose who he wants to play and how (reasonably) he wants to play the game. In FO4, since the backstory only affect the main route and there is so many side quests, it is not so bad in my book. I still play FO4 because of that.

Fallout 4 sold a shit ton, so the executives will think "Hey, gamers like the direction Fallout 4 took! Lets stick to this dumbed down rpg for the mindless masses." And they'd be right to do so. , financially speaking. Hopefully the devs listen more to the hardcore fans, and not to executives or casuals feedback tests. Best case scenario though is Obsidian gets to make another fallout game while Bethesda make the next elder scrolls game.

Most of the weapon upgrades were just that, upgrades with your perk level... The armor was bad, had potential but it was bad. In New Vegas your armor blocks a % of the damage, better armor better %. Then that armor characteristic-not just armor, but the % mechanic called DT, or damage threshold, mattered. If your damage is lower than their DT its hard to kill. So there are perks that can help, better weapons, and even special bullets you can purchase or manufacture.
@MWGScorp
@MWGScorp 6 жыл бұрын
New Vegas had weapon mods too, and like I said, most of the FO4 weapon mods were just upgrades like the NV ones... Sure it's neat to be able to wear under-clothes under your armor...but A LOT of clothes don't allow you to do that. It's mostly meaningless, basically is a visual deal unless you can't buy radaway and radx. lol Armor mods could have been better but were definitely cool, and not just straight upgrades, so bravo on that.

Fallout 4 was the first game I ever pre-ordered. Hell, I got the Pipboy edition. "It's Bethesda," I thought. "I can trust them to make a game I'll love." Long story short, I'll probably never pre-order again. At least I still have the pipboy. It's kinda cool. Most of your thoughts were pretty similar to mine, or have at least come up in discussion with friends with one exception I found interesting. My friends and I always found the factions to be one of the worst story-related parts of the whole game, in that they're all kinda assholes except the Minutemen, but the Minutemen are the nice guys who just want to help but have the least resources and the least ways they can improve the wasteland. The BoS had arguably the most they could offer the player, but had pretty much regressed to how the West Coast BoS had been a hundred years ago in their attitude. And the Institute are a scientific utopia built on slaves they don't see as sapient, but for some reason that's too grey so they're also dicks to the surface because ?????. Oh. And the Railroad. I don't know too much about them since when I met them on my one playthrough and they did their whole "I would literally sell your soul to Satan to maybe save a synth" thing and I wasn't about to fuck with that.

Doctor What first, there isn't much proof that they will react that way because they've never made a game that has gotten this much backlash, while their previous games are loved, this game is talked about as worse by many. Look at how many negative reviews fallout 4 got dude. So much of their audience isn't going to take their shit again. How many videos saying "fallout 4 is the greatest game" have gotten popular. Not many. Second of all, why would a company who doesnt care about their audience at all stop making games to make a better engine because everyone was complaining about it.

One thing they could learn is how to hire somebody that actually knows how to write or create a proper story. The story of FO4 was "okay", but right from the get-go it just screamed FAIL. Wife killed, son kidnapped... could see the climactic build-up there... but then the fizzle of running around for so long, just asking here and there, "have you seen this boy!?". That's usually the story setup that has a protagonist barreling through, kicking ass, taking names, and in a bad/nasty mood -- more or less turning the non-typical badass into, well, a badass! Yet through FO4, the protagonist is all, "hello there, how are you, pleasure to meet you, the weather is beautiful, thing are nice, and oh yeah, btw, my wife was slaughtered and my son was kidnapped from a stasis tube, so that kinda' sucks, but hey, I'll keep checking to see if he's on sale on Craig's List". :P~

I always hated the stories of Fallout games because they tried to give my character a motivation when the whole game was supposed to be a sandbox where you decide how your character acts. Like in Oblivion or Skyrim. The story was presented much more like an option, especially in Skyrim. I never felt like my Argonian had any real reason to follow either side, leaving it entirely up to me to decide what kind of character I wanted to play.

things Bethesda can learn? easy 1. don't rush your games 2. give it to someone who knows/cares about the series (Obsidian) and aren't out to make a quick buck off their fanboys (Bethesda) 3. get feedback so you can make the negative stuff not so bad 4. make DLC that's actually good and fun 5. stop making your games oversimple i have brain and i can use it 6. remove the pre-written backstory 7. LET US ROLE PLAY IN YOUR ROLE PLAYING GAME 8. do all the work yourself. the amount of bug fix mods is disgusting 9. make missions fun. not the talk to person go to place kill everything come back talk to person get paid repeat that's not fun and is lazy 10. add more guns not cool when you can get every gun that is not tied to a quest. 11. make the special guns actually special 12. get a new engine don't care that it is to do just fix it 13. rework the boring story 14. make it so the voices and missions don't bled together so bad you can't tell which faction's bitch your doing 15. i can go on and on

It's weird coming back to this a year later and seeing just how much nothing Bethesda learned beyond playing the extortion game. Take a look at how bad creation club is, how it's a literal nicking and diming of the playerbase, especially because it circumvents the PSN's no-mods rules by turning them into microtransactions. Fallout 76 is a confirmation of Bethesda's current focus with the fallout franchise, money at as little expense as they can put into it.

I miss having multiple ammo types for guns.......that was pretty neat. having to switch between hollow points and armor piercing rounds, or between high damage+high degredation and Low damage+low degredation ammo depending on the situation was a pretty nifty idea I miss stats, but i was never really a fan of fallout's style of improving them. leveling up and just dumping 20+ points into a single stat just to magically become better at it never felt rewarding. i preferred the elder scrolls "improve it by practicing it" method ....honestly, dogmeat always getting in my way made a bit of sense, being that he's a dog. i have a dog of a similar size, albeit a husky and not a german shepard, and she LOVES to get in my way, and get under my feet as much as she can just to get a bit of extra attention. i've lost count of how many times i tripped over her and spilled something. i liked them taking away the armor/weapon degradation for 1 reason. i am a GREEDY mother fucker. i do not like having to either a. pay out the ass to fix something i like because duplicates of it either dont exist or are super hard to find (fuck you fallout 3's t-51b power armor. fuck you. the one good thing that came out of operation anchorage was the near indestructible winterized version.....well, that and the stealth suit), or b. pay out the ass to stock up on weapons just to use as spare parts. it's one of the reasons i loved new vegas adding in the jury rigger perk, when i could use any shit tier gun or armor suit to repair a better one of the same basic type the only way i can make myself stomach the narrative is by applying the fan theory that the sole survivor is a courser class synth, and the whole thing is just an experiment put together by father. it's also how i put up with the perk system, by telling myself the "perks" are actually programs and subroutines that are slowly reactivating over time. also Rags....at 19:43, were you checking out that mutant hounds ass? ......kinky.

Its the way Dogmeat was programmed that is the issue. If you noticed when traveling with him that he always tries to stay out in front of you as you walk, this is how Bethesda programmed him to be to always be walking somewhere in front of you, which is a sort of new behavior for companions. This is all well and good until you enter tight spaces, this is when this program choice starts to show its flaws. Due to Dogmeat always trying to stay out in front of you thanks to his programming, this often puts him into situations where he wedges himself into places and blocks your path. Rex did not bother you cause he was not programmed with such behavior and followed you by staying directly behind you like other companions normally do. D-Dog from MGS5 was programmed to stay beside you instead of in front so he never got in your way either because of that. Dogmeat is using a new form of path finding where he does not have to be directly behind you to follow you where you go. He sticks close to you and alters his path based on the direction you are moving.

bethesda inherently dislikes traits which have both positive and negative consequences because they're far too invested in their elder scrolls design philosophy. that is, they dont want to penalize you for doing anything or making choices. this can also be seen by the lack of a level cap. they seem to believe that allowing you to do everything is a worthwhile form of game. they fail to realize that the lack of consequences makes a lot of things meaningless -- something you don't want in an rpg.

8:40 Honestly, i feel like that's a common problem in a lot of games these days- the quest in some way eventually has something to do with "go to a, kill b". My fave game of all time, Solatorobo, has a very interesting set of quests, however. Each quest is in some way different. One of the most notable quests that I can remember is this one lategame quest where you have to go into a fisherman's aquarium and choose fish for a recipe with no prior hints on what a good choices there are. However, during the quest, poachers from a sky pirate faction show up on each level of the aquarium, and you have to repel them. And when you successfully force them into retreat, they'll lament the fact that they were "so close to x", basically giving you hints. That game is so weird, but also weirdly fantastic. I forgot to mention that the fish float in the air

@@requiem4391 bc soft-resting people don't do, esp of you have your game to save every x time so if you mess up somewhere and your game actually saves and you do not have a backup save point well: you're kinda screwed in how you wish to play

Im 15 at this current date and FO4 is my first rpg experience, and at first I thought rpg's were these giant sorta daunting games with actions leading to consequences etc. But when I started playing FO4 it felt really dumbed-down compared to my own thought that u had of rpg's being this really big adventure where my personality could show leading to certain things. If I would compare fallout 4 to any other game it would be GTA 5, without the cars and atmosphere of course, all the missions led to the same things (although GTA 5's were really good), it's like any shooter campaign but open world.

Armor weight affects your ability to sneak in FO4. If you're trying to min/max in favor of stealth, shadowed leather is the best armor in the game, especially if you can find legendary leather armor that have bonuses to agility.

One thing that I will always love Fallout 4 for, is that it was the game to really get me into the other Fallout and Elder Scrolls games. More specifically; if it weren't for this game, I probably wouldn't've played Fallout New Vegas. So yeah, thanks to that it's a great game (for me anyway)

Its undoubtedly because of impossible to meet deadlines and more importantly the fact they still use the same version of the abysmal Creative Engine, which has to be the single worst triple A (or even just in general) engine ever made.

Johnny Green Face honestly the console versions are decent I believe nothing but the PS4 version for a couple of months and I'm enjoying it but guess what what I love most of all is that the game doesn't crash on PS4 like it did on PS3 Skyrim I'd be lucky if I could play for like 2 or 3 hours on the PS3 then the game would freeze and I be forced to turn the console off and turn it back on. But with the Skyrim on PS4 version It's better I'm actually happy with my purchase of Skyrim for my PS4.

Yeah Dogmeat was also annoying since whenever I'd close a door at Red Rocket, or close a gate I'd built, Dogmeat would immediately open it. I got mods to lock gates so he couldn't. Being able to wall off Red Rocket, and close/lock the gate was a great defense against Super Mutant Suiciders.

Honestly. Shooting needs to be less stat based (no skill should directly increase weapon damage) and everything should die easier and deal way more damage. Then, bring back all the alternate and non-combat choices from New Vegas. Design missions with alternate solutions other than rush in and genocide to be so difficult and the odds of rushing in and killing everything so against you, that you are naturally encouraged to use other means.

Can you tell me how that is ever explained in universe?
@1111Tactical
@1111Tactical 6 жыл бұрын
There is zero evidence it is lore that human beigs in this universe can survive exponentially more damage than real humans, it's simply a gameplay limitation. You cannot ultimately apply the tanky damage for real time combat in a modern setting and have the same satisfying gameplay as in a medieval fantasy. For instance, skills raising firearm damage makes no sense. No matter how good I am with a .44, shooting something in the heart will do the same damage. This is different than in Skyrim, how skilled I am at swinging a Bastard Sword *does* effect how much damage it does. It can take far more sword swings to fully take out an enemy than it takes shots from a .30 cal rifle. This is why unless it's high sci fi like Halo where people in combat are, as I implied, are for some lore reason way more tough than regular humans (Spartans are super soldiers in super armor). The average raider wearing scrap metal and tires as armor does not fit this requirement. There is nothing wrong with power armor being that tough, but the problem is regular humans. Basically, regular human vs human combat should be handled more like the STALKER series. Stat based functionality should apply to functions like dialogue skill checks, crafting, repairing, etc...

+Imperator Phil I don't agree that Bethesda's bad physics and hit detection is justified with it being alternate reality. Thats ridiculous. Its just an alternate timeline from the present, while still a game set in semi-realism which demands the game to immerse you with realistic physics, something Bethesda could never do on their shitty engine. Ragdoll physics and headhots not being instant kills on humans and small animals is not sci-fi, its bad design. In the older games, enemies wouldn't even flinch if they were hit with something. They would run through damage and still attack you unless crippled. Come on. You also only have one way to kill enemies in Bethesda games. Brute force. In a real survival game you are encouraged to be more creative and reduce damage to yourself, not run through bullets.

baleog92 I was ecstatic when I learned there would be voiced players. I wanted it so badly when I played 3 and new Vegas. it was an immersion breaker for me that I'd telepathically speak to people, but they'd respond in speach. Ibvuousky you need to get the mood that expands the speech UI to show full dialogue though Maybe an option to turn off the voiced speech would be good though for other people.

I am...soooo late to the party, BUT one thing that could have fixed the "I need to save Shaun" is instead of seeing the murder take place, you instead just wake up 200 years later to find your spouse dead, decomposed and Shaun missing. You'd assume they died during the 200 years and that Shaun likely isn't around. You then settle down to your new life...UNTIL, towards the end of the story, it is revealed Shaun is alive!

The first time I played Fallout 4; I was going through the Brotherhood quests, and got to the point where you get to the giant airship. At this point, the game became un-playable. ALL of the AI was broken: Companions would run off into the wilderness never to be heard from again, enemies would stand immobile as I gunned them down, NPC characters (such as the people at my settlements) would spin around in circles and would refuse to do their jobs. I won’t play it ever again.
