Glad you're all finding this video useful! Quick note: We mainly focus on CAN BUS in this video but there are a number of network technologies other than CAN BUS that manufacturers have used. Some include FlexRay, LIN, heck GM was using J1850 VPW back in the C5 corvette. Still, you'd still need to build a translator from A to B, even if they use a different network technology.

Chrysler had CCD or Chrysler Collision Detection. Confusing name, but it actually refers to the communication network and code to transmit messages without them colliding and garbling data.

You might be my favorite automotive youtuber ever. I am so sick, of seeing people talk about "ls swapping" everything, and never talking about having basic functions like this working again. Just get rid of power steering, ac, a functional gauge cluster, and throw in something aftermarket for rpms and call it a build. drives me nuts, contrary to common car guy belief, I dont actually want to drive a frame with an engine in it, I want to drive a car

Hahaha the opening of your video is the exact situation with our rotary swapped BRZ, Rotaru. Now, I did know this going into the project, but we accepted that not everything would work at first. We switched to a Link ECU from the ancient Apexi and it can interface with the CAN bus network. We knew Link had developed a BRZ stand alone, so we figured that would make life easy with the CAN decoding and transmitting. We didn't anticipate a few difficulties such as one out of two CAN networks being exposed. Basically we were already using one CAN connection for our CAN Lambda and CAN gauge, and you can't put the custom CAN and the OEM CAN on the same network. Also, despite Link now having all of the BRZ/86 CAN data available thanks to the plug in, it's not all publicly displayed since it's just used internally on a stock engine BRZ. This won't be a problem for many, but since we wanted to use the stock BRZ pedal for a DBW install, we were hoping to sniff accelerator pedal position data from the CAN network. We could overcome all of those issues with manual message reception instead of with the OEM CAN emulation, but then we'd need a hybrid CAN network. Like you talked about, you can define everything custom as long as you have message syntax. However, when we had the BRZ and aftermarket accessories on the same network, it seemed to cause some collision issues. So, we are adding a translator just to make our life simpler, though it could be fully done on the Link with a bit of board wiring and finding all of the correct CAN message syntax. Basically, we'll feed the translator RPM from the ECU and a few other basic signals to the translator and in turn we'll have a working dash, power steering, push to start, and more. We did find a workaround since the start of the swap where plugging in an OBD reader and turning the car on with a certain procedure enables most of the systems including power steering, but it's less than ideal. Also annoying to have to start the car with a switch and a big button, as much fun as the Clout Switch and Brap Brap Button are. Yes, let's definitely appreciate the people who take time to figure out all the CAN message info and share it publicly. A lot of people figure it out and keep it private either to have secret sauce or for profit. I'm not saying nobody deserves profit for their work, just sucks the car companies don't give it to us. Like you said, right to repair. One of the BRZ CAN experts is actually from Ukraine and has been participating in the war since it began. I messaged him on Facebook and luckily he is alright last I checked. Just wild how the car community can be linked like that. I hope he can go back to working on cars soon instead of fighting off an invasion. Lastly, I too love 80s/90s cars for simplicity, but obviously have to adapt. CAN is complex, but sharing information like this and everyone working together will only make it easier to deal with over time. There are certainly advantages along with the complexity. Let's keep making sick cars. Awesome video! Definitely going to help a lot of people understand. Subbed with the bell on.

Legendary comment tbh, and mirrors many of my own experiences. A rotary swapped BRZ sounds like a ton of fun! Been meaning to get my hands on a rotary myself but haven't found the time or money to do so just yet. If you happen to have the CAN message definition and are able to share (and haven't already), that'd be stellar! Thanks!

Before I watched your engine wiring video this stuff was like an alien language to me. I currently have a 04 325ci sitting in my driveway and I'm thinking about putting an LS or SBC in it. Probably an SBC since this would be my 2nd time ever even pulling an engine but regardless carbureted or EFI my confidence on pulling the trigger on the swap has jumped. Had an over head light that would come on by it self and was advised to send the LIN wave form. They don't even seem to know what their things are doing anymore.

Should can bus be legally standardized? Is there any proprietary tech involved that standardization would be harming some brands while helping others? Are there any reasons this would be any different from the obd port standardization? Love your content black thumb you definitely deserve more support than the algorithm is giving you 👍 ✌️
@BlackthumbTV5 ай бұрын
OBD hasn't aged well, imo. Manufacturers are adding new proprietary functionality to their cars that OBD simply isn't designed to work with. Things like reprogramming door control modules, or window modules, etc. The real answer would be to require manufacturers to document the protocols to do everything their magic little PDAs/softwares do, but that'll likely never happen

An LS RX-8 swap is exactly what I’m wanting to do. Does your swap have working ABS, DSC, and/or cruise control? Because those are features I’d love to keep if possible
@BlackthumbTV4 ай бұрын
Cruise works, yes. Just had to wire the cruise buttons to my standalone, and it controls the DBW throttle body accordingly. DSC/ABS are not functional in my build but that's because I simply couldn't fit the module anywhere in the engine bay with the LS in there. Otherwise, it would most likely work as the standalone emulates the factory ECU on the CAN BUS.
